Networks bury Benghazi cover-up in evening newscasts

Citizens should be outraged over the massive security and intelligence failures which led to the death of four Americans in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11, not to mention the weeks-long cover-up effort that was the subject of a House Oversight Committee hearing today. Paying attention, though, takes special effort when the mainstream media just can’t seem to focus either.

CBS’s Mark Knoller took note of the networks’ leading stories tonight.

Conservatives in the Twitterverse agree that Bret Baier’s extensive timeline of the terrorist assault on the Libyan consulate is required reading. Baier, of course, reports for Fox News, which was excluded from the State Department’s conference call yesterday during which officials finally came clean about the YouTube video protest that never was.

From the opening statement read to introduce today’s hearing:

Yesterday, the State Department began the process of coming clean about what occurred in Benghazi.  They made two witnesses available for interviews with this committee and, for the first time, publicly acknowledged the truth many had long suspected. Contrary to earlier assertions by Administration officials, there was no protest. The attack had nothing to do with a video made in California. The attack was a brutal and coordinated assault by terrorists on the eleventh anniversary of the terrorist attacks on New York and the Pentagon. I appreciate Secretary Clinton’s efforts to cooperate with this investigation. The steps she has taken to have those working under her tell the truth about what occurred is an important step in the right direction.

Some network coverage of this scandal would be an important step in the right direction as well.
