You know by now that the United States men’s national soccer team fell to Belgium 2‑1 today. Still, Americans were able to walk away from the match with a newfound respect for American goal keeper Tim Howard.

  • robertloggia16

Does Nancy Pelosi still think he’s an illegal immigrant?

    • TugboatPhil

I hadn’t heard that, but if she does, that only means she wants him to stay in America and live off the taxpayers.

  • thedumbblonde

We lost. Period. No ribbons for great efforts, Nancy.

    • BlahBlah

Actually no. Fighting this hard and to the end deserves recognition. This is not about “everyone gets a trophy”. I’ve been going to games/watching soccer my whole life and I can say with some authority that this sort of effort isn’t a common thing.

And more on topic, Tim Howard had the game not only of this WC but of many past and future. What he has done today is seen… well, almost never?

      • JGoolsby

If not for Howard, that score would have been a lot worse….the Belgians dominated that game.

        • Richard Jefferies

          Absolutely true.

    • Richard Jefferies

If Caesar had been watching, he wouldn’t have pointed his thumb at his throat and Tim Howard would have walked back to the Gladiator barracks to a roaring crowd and a clapping opponent.

  • IndySkye

Finally, Nancy Pelosi find something that she feels America can be proud of. She’s going to hate herself in the morning for acknowledging such a thing is possible.

    • TugboatPhil

She isn’t awake in the morning. She has to be back in her box before the rays of sunlight hit her.

  • waltermitty2012

Tim Howard should run the Border Patrol. Making 15 blocks is huge.

  • sambar2

Timmy Howard’s 16 saves were the most in any World Cup game since 1966. He’s a beast.

  • H50 ✓RAT

I was wondering why that flock of pigs flew by my window….Pelosi said something coherent and patriotic. Will wonders never cease?

Dont follow soccer, but hey team USA, good job!

  • twotowner

So let me get this straight. Our goalie gave up two goals and had 16 saves? That is a .888 save % The worst NHL goalie last year had a .911 and they easily face almost 2x the shots on goal. (ESPN does not have shot stats, I’m just going on what I’ve seen)

    • Eric

The two aren’t exactly 1:1. Soccer keepers have a much larger net to patrol and pucks don’t curve as much in the air.

Howard posted a shutout for all of regulation. Only in overtime, after he’d already been worn out by the defense leaving him in bad situations, did the Belgians score on him.

    • BlahBlah

In a word – blah blah blah.

    • John Smith

Maybe you should take a look at the goal size for Hockey and Soccer and then see how stupid and irrelevant this comparison is.

      • twotowner

The goal size comparison is quite relevant. A standard soccer goal has an opening 8 times larger than a hockey goal. But by volume, a soccer ball is 47 times larger than a hockey puck. So proportionally the puck has more room to score than a soccer ball. Plus, a puck has a speed of close to 100mph while a soccer ball is typically around 65-70mph. So to sum up, proportionally smaller object traveling much faster still gets stopped more frequently in a shorter time span than a soccer ball.

        • Squiddy

          The opening size of a hockey goal is 6′ x 4′ – 24 sq ft. A soccer goal is 24′ x 8′ – 192 sq ft.

If a soccer keeper were 12 foot tall, had an 80-inch chest and had a 20 foot reach, then maybe your comparison would make more sense. A GK in hockey could stop half the shots without moving.

Not knocking hockey, but comparing save pct is foolish.

          • Fire and Adjust!

            Right on the mark Squiddy!

        • TomJB

Comparison by volume is not relevant. More accurate would be a comparison of 2-dimensional profile area. But if you want to get into these things, how about the surface material? Rubber pucks don’t tend to slip and spin off fingers (gloves) and keep traveling in much the same direction – they carom in a new direction.

    • JGoolsby

Ever see a soccer goal? That thing is at least three times bigger than the hockey net. I don’t like soccer but I did appreciate watching him stone the Belgians for as long as he did. The fact he had a total of 18 shots his way shows how badly the US got dominated by Belgium and just how impressive Howard was.

    • Richard Jefferies

While we are being completely irrelevant, Chris Carter of the Houston Astros had a .184 Batting Average, the worst in the Major League. What part of most saves since 1966 did you miss?

    • Kmicanakreku

But goalies in hockey basically cover the entire goal that is pretty small to begin with. Terrible comparison

    • TomJB

The worst NHL goalie had a .911? Psst, you missed the link to page 2 of 2 on ESPN. .891 by 2 different goalies. Yes, still high, but you are nit-picking so I will as well.

How about comparing soccer goalies to soccer goalies and hockey goalies to hockey goalies?

Update that .891 percentage was only for goalies qualifying for consideration for post-season awards. The worst goaltender in the NHL last season had a .714 save percentage.

  • Morgan

Howard was amazing today. Green and Yelin were superb. Dempsey, Bradley and Wondo should have those jerseys ripped off and never make the USMNT again. Eddie Johnson and Landon Donovan had no business sititing at home while those clowns ran amok in Brazil!

    • BlahBlah

Totally agree. WTF was with Dempsey? It’s as if he weren’t there at all. I’m not gonna diss him or anything because anyone can have a bad day and I’m sure a broken nose ain’t fun, but those 2 kids were just completely and totally awesome!

      • Rachel

Might have totally missed this, but was Zusi replaced today? Note: still learning the ins and outs of soccer.

        • BlahBlah

Yes he was replaced with Green I think. I wondered about that too but OK I ain’t no coach.

          • Rachel

Ohhhhhh okay. Well, Green was great and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for him next WC!

          • BlahBlah

Yedlin was better. That kid seriously picked up the slack. I’d say he was the second best on the team after Howard. So lightning quick, he’s gonna be a star!

    • Fire and Adjust!

I agree about Bradley…….. both of Belgium’s goals came on counter attacks immediately after Bradley turned the ball over just outside the top of the Belgium 18…….both of them! His ball handling this game was atrocious and his whole tournament performance was not much better…… Howard had a performance like none I’ve ever seen, utterly amazing…….. and Beasley was pretty damn amazing himself…….. Gonzalez and Zusi are two other honorable mentions in my book………….

  • ElbethL

Yeah, Tim Howard is a beast. He’s been amazing the whole World Cup, but what an incredible finish he put together.

  • Comrade Hadenov

Tim Howard was amazing, but the defense and midfield never should have put him in a position to have to make a record 16 saves. Congratulations to the team for making it as far as they did in the World Cup.

  • Steve__Jacobson

    1 win and 3 loses?

    • John Smith

      Try again.
      1 Win
      1 Draw
      2 Losses.

      • TomJB

And to add, the US ranking was #13 in the world going into the tournament. The draw was against the #4 ranked in the world, the 1-goal loss was against the #2, and the win was against #37. Belgium is #11.

  • BlahBlah

I wouldn’t write Howard off like that. Goalies can sometimes afford to be older. See Dino Zoff, 40 at his last WC.

  • John Smith

Nancy Pelosi is “proud” of her country?
    Could have fooled me.

    • © Sponge

She hates this country and that the citizens rallied around Team USA with a sense of unity and pride.

She’d rather adopt all of the illegals streaming across the border and turn us into a 3rd world country because a needy citizen is a peasant, just how she’d like it.

  • Squiddy

Tim Howard and those other 10 guys did us proud …

More seriously, Jones and Johnson were great the whole tournament, Yedlin and Green show promise, and Bradley, well, not the day to talk about his performance …

Congrats, was a laughably impossible group – no one gave us a chance to escape, so getting thru was more than I could hope for – fun while it lasted. Ugh, 4 years ’til the next one???

    • Roto ✓Intentionally Left Blank

Yea, kinda like Tim Howard 16 Belgium 2 :-) And there’s always Everton F.C. to watch…

  • Rob Tong

Tim Howard in battle of the goalkeepers…

  • Oscar

When did Sid Haig become a soccer goalie?

  • DeadlockVictim

I hope Guzan’s ready in time for 2018.

  • saywhatsaywhat

He choked twice in OT. Find another hero, soccer nerds. You’re supposed to WIN the game. Not just have “good intentions”, you liberals.
