'You probably didn't know': Quote shared by Brit Hume shows how border security underreporting can be problematic

The following quote, excerpted by Brit Hume from a New York Post opinion piece, is a commentary on the unreliability of main-name news outlets to cover what is and has been taking place at the southern border.

The paragraph that follows the quote shared by Hume in the New York Post story reads,

“The only thing you would have been told was that “MAGA” Republicans and “right-wing media” outlets like Fox News and The Post were “bashing immigrants” who were simply looking for a better life.”

According to statistics published by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, there were more than 2.3 million recorded illegal migrant encounters at the southern border in Fiscal Year 2022. The same chart shows that in FY 2021, there were more than 1.7 million recorded illegal migrant encounters at the southern border. In contrast, there were 458,088 recorded illegal migrant encounters at the southern border in FY 2020.

The statistics tell the story of a national security catastrophe and a humanitarian emergency. There is an onus on Americans to be diligent about remaining informed. There is an onus on organizations that purport themselves to be purveyors of news to report news, particularly matters of national urgency. If millions of non-citizens entering the United States in an unauthorized manner along the southern border is not a matter of national urgency demanding accurate reporting with prominent and extensive coverage, what is?
