Sigh.
Forgive me if I am a little exasperated today, Twitchy readers, but I regret that I have to inform you once again ... the American legacy media.
Yes, it is another day ending in a Y, so that means that we have to endure yet one more boring, tired, played out, unoriginal, and completely preposterous comparison by the media that Donald Trump is, in fact, Hitler.
Today's edition comes to us via The Atlantic and 'historian' Timothy Ryback. You'll never guess what makes Trump Hitler this time. Go ahead, guess. I'll bet you don't get it without peeking below.
Give up? Yes, it's tariffs. Trump likes tariffs. You know who ELSE liked tariffs?
Like I said ... sigh.
Hitler used tariffs to “liberate” Germany from a globalized world order—careening the economy backwards, Timothy W. Ryback writes. https://t.co/ApJCgcNVKc pic.twitter.com/Ha55G7BrR6
— The Atlantic (@TheAtlantic) May 2, 2025
To be fair, Ryback doesn't explicitly mention Trump in his review of the economics in Nazi Germany, but who are we kidding here? The timing -- not to mention the media outlet that published this article -- is a little too convenient to be coincidental. And while I am not going to waste time citing excerpts from the piece, if you read through it, the parallels Ryback draws where he is trying to implicate Trump for doing the same things that Hitler did are about as subtle as getting slapped in the face with a dead carp.
I'm not the only one who was fed up with The Atlantic's grasping at straws here.

Barack Obama was apparently Hitler too. Good to know. https://t.co/U0jdpBumJB pic.twitter.com/Syc58sr0yA

Funny, I don't recall The Atlantic running their Hitler tariff article at any point in the last four years or at any point during Obama's eight years in office.
Why now? (He asked, knowing the obvious answer.)
The Atlantic actually wants me to believe that most of my father's family was wiped out because of Hitler's tariffs - and that my family will meet the same fate because of Trump's.

Just stop it with the Holocaust minimization already. pic.twitter.com/NRFHsxTXlt
As even Bill Maher recently said, these constant Hitler analogies are more than a little insulting to six million dead Jews, not to mention their families and descendants.
They can’t help themselves. They just can’t do it. Everything has to be Hitler. It’s such an impoverished worldview. They can’t just say that the tariffs are a terrible idea that has been implemented capriciously and dishonestly—which is the truth. It has to be Hitler, always. https://t.co/CtSCfBImfW
— Charles C. W. Cooke (@charlescwcooke) May 2, 2025
The Atlantic cannot say that tariffs are a terrible idea because they don't believe that. I know they don't believe that because they have never written critically of them before, and certainly not when any other country imposes them on the United States.
Tariffs are only bad when Trump applies them. For ... reasons.
So, to make that point, they inevitably turn to Hitler. Because, of course, they do.
You know who else uses tariffs? Every other country in the world. I guess they’re Hitler, too? You guys beclown yourselves.

Godwin’s Law undefeated.

It's not just undefeated, it's practically Journalisming 101 with the media these days.
At this point I'm just wondering if I missed a Hitler cameo in Home Alone 2. https://t.co/1rThebRsnx

HA.
OK, that was pretty darn funny.
I could go on for much longer with everyone dragging The Atlantic and Ryback, but here is the point, in two posts.
Everyone hates you and you deserve it

It's not just that the legacy media today is the public relations arm of the Democrat Party; we know that, and that's bad enough.
No, the problem is that they are completely LAZY.
When was the last time anyone read an article from a mainstream publication (or watched cable news) and said to themselves, 'Wow, I may not agree with all of these points, but that was insightful and I learned a few things today.'
I would wait for an answer, but I don't want to pass out from holding my breath.
They simply do not think for themselves anymore. Yes, calling Trump Hitler is a directive they receive from Democrat politicians. I get that. And yes, the media's only purpose these days is to fire up the ever-shrinking Democrat base, not to educate or inform citizens and voters.
But do they have to suck at it so much? And be so obvious about it?
It appears that they do. And the reason they do is that they are comfortable in their laziness. Being an apparatchik still pays pretty well (at least for now). Not to mention the fringe benefit of being in the 'IN' crowd in Manhattan, DC, and Los Angeles.
In contrast, independent, critical thought is hard work. God forbid they actually do any of that. Their heads might explode from their brains being asked to function for a living after so many years of lying dormant while they mindlessly repeat narratives.
The American people deserve better. I don't have delusions or pipe dreams about a 100 percent objective media that only calls balls and strikes. Frankly, I am not sure that has ever existed. But we deserve better than a media that can't go five minutes without shouting 'HITLER!' because they can't think of anything else to say.
Fortunately, we have options today that we have never had before. We have X, we have Substack, we have independent media, podcasts, and so much more.
Not everyone on those platforms is a Trump supporter. That's fine. This isn't about Trump, despite the legacy media believing that EVERYTHING is about Trump.
It's better than fine, in fact; it's what we want. We don't want an alternate version of the leftist media that just repeats MAGA talking points. At least, I don't.
If Glenn Greenwald or Bari Weiss or Matt Taibbi are critical of conservatives (and they are, at times), I will pay attention to them. I may not agree, but I know that they will have put a lot of thought, effort, and critical analysis into their assessments. Not only that, but they will engage in debate with people who disagree with them, something the legacy media is singularly incapable of.
What I will not do -- what I am not just sick of, but also completely bored with -- is listen to The Atlantic call Trump Hitler for the umpteenth time in one month. They can speak to their echo chamber, but they can no longer demand or command the attention of any thinking person in America.
I have often said that the death of the legacy media was ruled a suicide. I still stand by this. But I think a more detailed cause of death is warranted.
The legacy media has not only committed suicide, it has committed suicide by sloth.
