As should be obvious by now, Democrats are terrified at the prospect of former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz mounting a presidential campaign as an independent, and the campaign to tear him down is in full effect.
Schultz said he’s “self-made” and that he grew up in the projects in Brooklyn. But New York Daily News columnist and former Obama guy Brandon Friedman explains how those two factors don’t square.
If you "grew up in the projects," then you're not "self-made."
The "projects" are taxpayer-funded public housing. Your friends, neighbors, family members and millions of Americans you never met all worked and paid their taxes so that you wouldn't have to grow up homeless. https://t.co/zcWIMw2O4m

Former Obama guy still sticking with the “you didn’t build that” strategy … very wise.
Bless your heart.

You should totally go to housing projects and tell residents this.

A terrible take on a terrible take!
— Timothy P Williams (@TimWilliamsPhD) January 30, 2019
Not a fan of Schultz, but this is an awful take.
— Alan Kaiser (@alanhkaiser) January 30, 2019
Seems to me growing up in the projects, and lifting yourself up from there to create the life he did, is a pretty good accomplishment despite tough odds. According to @BFriedmanDC it’s no biggie.
— Alan Kaiser (@alanhkaiser) January 30, 2019
But that’s not how it’s written. It’s written like, “without our collective help you wouldn’t have accomplished anything.” Gives him no credit for his own initiative/drive. I still think the guy is an ass, but most people couldn’t do what he did.
— Alan Kaiser (@alanhkaiser) January 30, 2019
And you know, he’s never paid taxes or given anything back. That’s how he’s still a billionaire and the Democrat talking point for the moment is that it’s immoral for a country to even have billionaires.
— ConservativeBlackMan ???? (@NevilleD35) January 31, 2019
If you were relying on public support as a kid and eventually became a billionaire through work, you're "self made". Any reasonable person would agree with that.
— ManhattanMetsFan (@ManhttanMetsFan) January 31, 2019
And he hasn't paid it back?
— mephisto jones (@mephistojones) January 31, 2019
…and he paid it all back many times over.
— Michael R. Trumpus delendus est! (@Nel_Mezzo) January 30, 2019
I'm pretty sure he paid back what he has taken in taxes a million fold.
— Eddy Thayer(セイヤーエディ) (@EduardThayer) January 31, 2019
I disagree. Nothing wrong w using social help to climb up & out. Particularly if you then help others as he has done. And then what is self-made? You're born and given a roof over your head and food to eat. That's not self-made then either.
— montrealaisemalaise (@montrealaise2) January 30, 2019
This is quite a stretch
— Mill (@realmill76) January 31, 2019
Good take. ?
— Crftbrlvr (@Klaus_Flauten) January 31, 2019
One of my favorite rappers, E-40, has an album called self made millionaire. He grew up in the projects. Not a chance in hell you would go out of your way to correct him with the same gusto.
— Geezoff (@MimiPeepeechimi) January 31, 2019
This is just weird.
— Craig Thomas (@uwishuwereJCash) January 31, 2019
I disagree. The PJ's aren't exactly bastions of opportunity.
And I am not a supporter of his.

Hoo boy. pic.twitter.com/CCvTnpxXHa
— Brian Miles (@bryemye) January 30, 2019
i mean, i strongly dislike schultz, but cmon man.
— Brian Miles (@bryemye) January 30, 2019
So, if you escaped the projects and made something of your life, thank society. But, if you didn't escape the projects or escaped and failed at life, then society is to blame?
— Dark Stormy Knight (@detective27) January 31, 2019
I think Howard Shultz is a dingus and this is still a mindblowingly awful take
— miumiu (@jmlumberjack) January 31, 2019
You need to be raised by wolves and then reach billionaire status for it to count. Any assistance outside of that is disqualifying. Got it.
— Sean O'Connell (@spoirish90) January 31, 2019
So why isn't everyone who grew up in the projects a billionaire?
Seems he took the limited opportunities he had & ran with them. Perhaps we should applaud those that do & listen to what they have to say
— Bob Donelson (@bdonelson4) January 31, 2019
Grasping for straws here
— Dan Breen (@DanR_Breen) January 31, 2019
Ummm, no.
— Courtney (@CShadegg) January 31, 2019
We’ve got to admit, it’s fun to see the Democrats panic this early.
