First day of Nidal Hasan trial closes with horrifying 911 call, survivor testimony

At last, the trial of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan is underway. The first day opened with Hasan admitting to the shootings and apologizing for falling short in his effort as a Muslim “to establish a perfect religion in the land of supreme God.” We’re done here, right?

Not quite. For their part, prosecutors played a 911 tape on which was captured the dying sounds of Hasan’s victims and heard the testimony of Staff Sgt. Alonzo M. Lunsford Jr., who was shot seven times in the act of “workplace violence.”

Although there was a chance that Hasan, who is defending himself, would end up cross-examining the very people he is on trial for shooting, that scenario didn’t materialize.
