CNN released a photo of the “bomb” sent to the Time-Warner Center in Manhattan, and there were plenty of questions. Why was it stamped but then apparently delivered via courier? Was that an ISIS flag painted on it?
Glenn Beck had similar questions:
Who makes a bomb with the wires outside the pipe on the ends? Then the ISIS flag? These bombs were meant to be found. Who is trying to make us believe that ISIS is trying to kill Americans w/ pipe bombs? Happy everyone is safe. pic.twitter.com/TmXP6JCe3H

Navy veteran and former bomb disposal officer Tom Sauer weighed in with his expertise and thinks these bombs are not much more sophisticated than Clock Boy’s “cool clock.”
(THREAD)
A few observations from a former bomb disposal officer (i.e. Me):
1. Proper pipe bombs don't have wires connected to both ends. That's dumb.
— Tom Sauer (@thomasbsauer) October 24, 2018
2. You can find timers / remote control receivers WAY smaller than whatever that white box is. A proper timer would best be stored inside the pipe, making it fully encapsulated. That thing is just silly looking.
— Tom Sauer (@thomasbsauer) October 24, 2018
4. "Hoax Devices" are FAR more common than real ones. In which case, we should ask ourselves what the motives of the "bomber" are and "who benefits?"
Go ahead. Think deeply and critically.
— Tom Sauer (@thomasbsauer) October 24, 2018
Some people seem to be having a real problem doing that today, but go on …
3. Bottom Line: Whoever made that wanted it to be painfully obvious to anyone and everyone that it's a "bomb."
This is nearly the same as a bundle of road flares wrapped together with an old-timey alarm clock ticking away.

In other words, we’re not dealing with an explosives expert here.
My sentiments exactly. Thank you Tom.

Don't actual detonators use two wires, not one, to be activated? The picture looks like somebody took 14 gauge strands out of Romex. Would it even explode?
— Bike Bubba (@BikeBubba) October 24, 2018
They do not if you do not want them to detonate, BUT, want them noticed. This appears to be for "media affect" vs "dramatic outcome" time will tell.. Prosecute all involed
— jim@njslea (@njslea) October 24, 2018
The bombers were either too inept to succeed in exploding any of the bombs, or perhaps they were not intended to explode. Perhaps they were just intended to sow terror.
— The Rombach Report (@club_ed8) October 24, 2018
My thought is, we either have the BEST bomb detection in the universe, or, more likely, not a single one of them was actually intended to detonate. The more that show up, the higher the likelihood becomes.
— MOB Daddee ® (@WoozYerDaddee) October 24, 2018
So, their primary purpose was not to kill? That leaves are long list of other purposes – scare, provoke, publicise, mislead, distract.
— Katz (@ozkatz) October 24, 2018
Tom – there were 4 bombs, one was 2 blocks from our office in Columbus circle. Most likely not mail delivered, and if they were a hoax – they were most likely test runs
— Oz Sultan (@ozsultan) October 24, 2018
These are interesting points, and you can certainly count me as suspicious, but I believe one of the police agencies described one of the bombs as "functioning," which would suggest it wasn't a hoax.

This device was designed to be discovered IMHO.
— PRONA (@PRONAUSA) October 24, 2018
I'm going to cook up some detonated pieces of corn and watch this show. Popcorn is more explosive than this CNN bomb is
— Keith Dryla (@DrylaKeith) October 24, 2018
Looks like something Wile E Coyote would send to the Roadrunner
— NukeDad (@NukeDad) October 24, 2018
I thought it looked more like a vape device.
— Russell Whitehead (@R_KWhitehead) October 24, 2018
It's a clock
— Fred Finlay (@ffinlay) October 24, 2018
“Cool clock, Ahmed.”
— Just_Only_John (@john_warr) October 24, 2018
Furthermore, who puts a TIMER on a MAIL BOMB?
What, you calculated the exact time it would take the UPS to deliver the package, then the time it would take the target to open the package, and then 10 seconds after that????
Silly.
This is the work of Wile E. Coyote, Genius.
— Laz A. Mataz (@MrLazamataz) October 24, 2018
I would wonder why a timer is there at all? Wouldn't you have something designed to go off on opening?
— RocksEm (@RocksEm) October 24, 2018
We guessing whoever’s behind this will be caught, and soon.
