As Twitchy reported, the White House pushed today’s press briefing from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Tweeters speculated that the decision had to do with a desperate effort to cover itself in light of the damning new evidence for a Benghazi cover-up. And it looks like they were right:

Politico reports:

The off-the-record session was announced to reporters in the wake of an ABC News report showing that White House and State Dept. officials were involved in revising the now-discredited CIA talking points about the attack on Benghazi.

Transparency, y’all.

Great question.

The panic would be hilarious if it weren’t so brazenly douchey.

C’mon, Jay.

Exactly.

CNN’s Jake Tapper, for one, is not happy, as evidenced by this retweet:

Were hush-donuts involved?

Oh, and now comes the news that the briefing has been pushed back even further, to 3:15 p.m.:

Well, gee.

This is shaping up to be one hell of a briefing — assuming the White House has the guts to go through with it.

***

Update:

Well, well, well:

Politico has changed the report’s original title and posted a correction. White House spokesman Josh Earnest told author Dylan Byers that the meeting was not technically off-the-record; rather, it was conducted on “deep background.”

I think we’re very near the delicious “shove-fest” between Hillary and Obama to see who goes under the bus. You can bet that Hill’s already threatened that if she gets shoved under she’s taking BO with her.

This name and substance of this off the record presser will be edited 12 times or more, to get it where the administration wants it to be. From Off the record to:

          • TocksNedlog

You want for her to NOT be tainted by this in 2016?

            #fuckthelameduck

          • almarquardt

I should have been more specific. I’m hoping she’ll fight the Obama machine so more of the truth will come out. If she allows herself to be thrown under the bus, we’ll never know everything that happened.

At this point I’m less interested in 2016 than making sure those who died in Benghazi get the justice they deserve.

          • algonquinmatt

I believe that she was fully complicit, back on 9/11/12, with the promise from Obama that “if i get re-elected, i will help YOU get elected in ’16”

As we know, Obama was already on the campaign trail, and was highlighting his killing Bin Laden and telling everyone that “Al Qaeda had been decimated”.

there was no way they could let this attack become a premeditated terrorist event.

I characterize this as Obama’s “Mission Accomplished” moment.

          • TocksNedlog

She isn’t going to be thrown under the bus; that’s why both the State Dept and the White House are blaming ‘the intelligence community’. When push comes to shove, those who got Obama elected will tell him to shove any thoughts of protecting his legacy where the sun don’t shine — what happens next will be the only thing they care about.

          • http://profiles.google.com/danielmedicis Daniel Medicis

Hillary can’t fight the Obama machine. She now IS the Obama machine and is as responsible for the Benghazi deaths as Obama is. Never forget what a black widow Hillary is. Google ‘arkancide’ and see the huge list of people who have ‘committed suicide’ or ‘died in crashes’ around Hillary and Bill. One thing they all had in common: They knew too much.

          • MurphTacular

Wha??? This is bizarre “info” … Oh. Boy.

    • Elaine

Off the record and behind closed doors. That’s something new.

      • Jeremy

        yeah real shocking

      • tops116

Sounds like a book tagline. I hope Bill Ayers keeps in mind when he writes Obama’s next book.

        • MurphTacular

Did you guys ever come up with any kind of source or root cause for this inexplicable conspiracy that Ayers ghost wrote Obama’s memoirs?

          • Junie3

Well heck yeah. Ayers admitted he did.

          • MurphTacular

Source, please … I’ve heard Limbaugh ruminate about this, but I thought it was pure conjecture.

          • GrimJack

Two sources that I am aware of as being on record. The most recent one, which Libs really hate, is Michelle Obama. In a puff book, she flat out admitted that Obama was behind the curve writing the book so they gave his notes and everything to Bill Ayers.

The original source is Jack Cashill. He wondered how someone whose previous prose was truly crappy and unreadable could produce such a book that caused everyone to swoon. He investigated and found that Obama was very tight with Bill Ayers, who had books already published. Comparing the flows of Ayers’ books to Obama’s book, he found the flows to be very similar, including a wide usage of nautical terms (Ayers went to sea in his younger days, Obama did not). Despite what one thinks of Ayers, his books are at least readable. Any writing of Obamas previous to the book is not. It is far more likely that Ayers bailed out his friend Obama and kept it on the down low than Obama went from really shitty prose to best seller with nothing in between.

          • MurphTacular
          • GrimJack

My point still stands. Which is more likely: Bill Ayers ghost wrote a perfectly readable book and kept his mouth shut or a miracle of miracles Obama went from really crappy prose to a readable book all on his own with nothing in between. Or are you suggesting that Obama had a different ghost writer?

          • MurphTacular

There’s too many great books out there for me to read flavor-of-the-month memoirs by current pols. So, feel free to believe what you want. But please don’t act as if everyone “knows” Ayers wrote anything attached to Obama’s name. We “know” no such thing. And I checked into that Cashill fellow’s claim – doesn’t seem credible.

          • dasnva

I actually saw the majority of that talk Bill Ayers gave in what looked like a small-college auditorium… He repeated several times, “you know, I wrote that book”… Student asked about one of the Prez’s other books… He replied with something like ‘the rest are all trash’… A very short clip of him saying it can be found on Youtube… He laughed it off at the end in a reply to a question with, “if you can help me prove it, I’ll split the royalties with you.” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

    • Junie3

Saw a sign today that said, if the hole your digging is getting deep, stop digging.

  • Kevin Krom

Any “reporter” in the off-the-record meeting has to be assumed to be a willing disinformation tool of the administration, and have this pointed out about (and to) them at every opportunity.

For the record, I have no problem with biased reporters, as long as the bias is openly admitted.

    • MurphTacular

Obviously, you’ve never been a reporter. Getting sources to discuss topics off-the-record is standard from school boards to the highest levels of government and public life. It’s nothing new. And it’s generally a sign of respect for the reporter …

      • David

I was a reporter and later owned a newspaper. In the former position, our publisher and editor would not allow such a travesty as “off-the-record” nonsense. Of the latter, when I interviewed people like Kathleen Sebelius everything was on the record.

Go to your Obama cult meeting and shut up as you obviously have no idea what you are talking about.

        • Squirrel!

Hehe! Schooled ol’ Murph! He’s been rolling through the thread talking big sh*t, Mr. I Know Reporters, and you schooled him! Good job!

        • MurphTacular

Didn’t you use the “Obama cult meeting” line last week? Isn’t there a limit? And yes, I too have worked in the ‘fourth estate’ and some bosses allow off-the-record discussion, some don’t. Some sources – for a whole host of possible reasons – couldn’t go off-the-record, whereas regular sources like cops/lawyers/judges for example could weave back and forth like a running back because of ongoing investigations and the like.

          • Judy Taylor

            Again, you’re boring.

          • MurphTacular

Sorry, I’ll try to pep things up … LOL.

      • Judy Taylor

        God you’re boring.

        • MurphTacular

Yep. Facts you don’t want to hear can be less than thrilling … Tis true.

  • Canadian in USA

This tells me that the WH is in full blown panic mode if they’re trying to have some “secret” meeting. Either it’s new talking points or a new strategy to bury it/blame the GOP/deflect the narrative/blame Bush.

    • r_coplin2001

If they blamed Bush they would be stupid as he has been out of office for almost 4 years when the second 9/11 attack happened.

      • Canadian in USA

Won’t stop them. As a matter of fact, they just blamed Bush for the IRS targeting Conservative groups. (Off-topic I know but still…)

        http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/carney-irs-run-bush-political-appointee_722149.html

      • MurphTacular

You’re comparing Benghazi to 9-11-01? Oh. Boy.

        • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

Uh… it’s not a comparison? It was an attack that happened on Sept. 11, 2012. An American embassy/consulate is considered American soil. There was, if you recall, an attack that also occurred on Sept. 11, but in 2001. Hence the ‘second’ attack.

  • Jack Deth

    Correct me if I’m wrong.

So this OTR briefing, not “press conference”; will create a new narrative.

To dispel or discredit the older narrative.

That was trumpeted by Ms. Rice five times in one Sunday.

Pulled from some lackey’s ass to draw away attention

from Obama’s greed and incompetency and inability to create

    a believable original narrative?
    *******************************************************************************************************
    Have I got that right?

    • Elaine

They are cooking up a NEW set of talking points as we speak. Which liberals will obvioulsy embrace, since they are desperate for a way out of this mess.

      • Jack Deth

        Sucker bet:

If that doesn’t fly so well. The WH will send out orders to ridicule, intimidate and humiliate any potential new witnesses. Question their credibility and that of the reporters covering the hearings.

It’s the only card they have left to play.

        And so, so predictable.

From now forward, anyone reporting facts, from any source, about Benghazi is, at best, making indictments on exclusionary evidence; or, worse, empowering the nation’s enemies.

Nevertheless, it took the WH more than THREE weeks to realize that their own folks at STATE had it right all along? Is that what he’s trying to say now? Really? They “mistakenly” thought the attack was “spontaneous?”
Since when do spontaneous attackers have such an arsenal of weapons? Since when does the WH accounting trump the facts as relayed immediately by folks on the ground enduring a “stand down” order?

We have to thank ABC for exposing the 12 talking point changes. Now thats another network who MAYBE stopped drinking the kool aid. What it did was force the other networks to have to report on it if they want any credibilty at all. All this does is make me wonder if Petrius was scapegoated to get him out of the picture since e-mails have surfaced showing him not happy with the changes.

Obama is only trying to get one thing straight to the press. He will tell them in secrect he was watching live feed of the Benghazi crisis and did not travel to Las Vegas until late into the next day. He is not going to cover for anyone else only himself.

  • John J. Virden

Ahh, just a little more transparency from the most transparent administration in American history. I do have to hand it to them, they are masterful sheep hearders. A little mothers day health care and same sex visas proposed for the immigration bill. Queers and freeloaders will not have any attention span for Bengazi cause they see something shiny.

OK boys, we need a new war to distract everybody from this mess. Any suggestions where we can drop a few bombs?

    • Bud-Kathy Jones

Tripoli sounds like a good option.

FYI: “off the record” and “deep background” are the same thing. It’s when a source agrees to a reporter something and the reporter agrees not to attribute the info to them. Generally, the reporter is then supposed to take the info and get it confirmed on the record by a separate source. It’s not as nefarious as some of those Tweets are implying.

Well then, why not share it with everyone?

      • MurphTacular

That’s the whole point of ‘deep background’ and ‘off-the-record’ which are largely, but not quite, synonymous. It’s a chance to say things that won’t end up in print attached to your name.

It’s not that I am unfamiliar with the term, but once again ask why he would share it with only 14 reporters? Are they the chosen few that he can rely on not to rat him out?

        • HARP2

I screwed your wife last night but there is no need for you to know about it.
          Deep background too.

You guys can really get surly when people begin factually discussing concepts that you previously believed you understood.

          • Bud-Kathy Jones

Thanks for the heads up, but the whole idea still has a bad aroma. Why not just tell us unwashed masses so we can judge for our self ?

  • Lamontyoubigdummy

    Let’s put this in perspective with a little Q & A.

Question: Following JFK’s assassination, did his Press Secretary, Pierre Salinger, ever hold a closed door/ off the record meeting with the press?

Answer: C’mon…you already know the answer.

We are the laughing stock of the whole world today, hear that Hillary, Obama made you the joke that you are today and the whole world witnessed it.

  • David

“We have concocted another story to tell to the dopey Americans,” Obama said. “Remember that if you deviate from our story we know where you live and where your kids go to school,” he concluded.

And when they called Carney on it, he said, “well, I’m talking to you now.”

Usually, cover-ups are done with some subtlety and deftness. Whereas before the cover-up was obvious and frustrating, it’s just painful to watch.

    Run the entire administration out.
