As Twitchy reported earlier this week, Newark Mayor Cory Booker has accepted a challenge to live off of food stamps to draw attention to the plight of food stamp recipients. Booker confirmed today that he will be participating for one week in December:

And tweeting about the experience:

Booker has also called for more money for New Jersey public schools to fund things like nutrition. Actress Kirstie Alley, who agrees with Booker on this count, is pledging her support and vowing to participate in the SNAP Challenge as well:

But while Alley agrees with Booker that better nutrition for children is a cause worth supporting, she also shines a spotlight on misuse of tax dollars:

Still, if it’s for the children …

Gee…a whole week on gobbermint food?? What a trooper!! Lol. Maybe while he’s at it he can pitch a tent in his back yard a pretend he’s homeless for a day!! Nothing like feeling the pain of the hungry and the homeless! Fail!!

They should see who can raise the most money by selling their EBT cards.

You’d probably get a kick out of the messages I’m receiving. I’m being reminded that I have to comply with the strict standards of what I can buy, and where I can buy it..etc. cold FOOD only..ETC. kind of funny coming from the same people that would call me racist or cut me, if I were to say something to them when I see them at AUTO ZONE buying rims!
That’s right.. auto zones just hung up a signs on their stores proclaiming how they now accept EBT.

          I don’t understand, they don’t sell food?

          • TwitWit

come to think of it, i believe there was some form of jerky on the counter.. i know there were fruit scented air fresheners too.

        • my preciousss!!

will you guys be on tv? let us know..i’d like to watch it.

          • TwitWit

lol.. i know I’m not going to be on t.v. i’ll take the stupid “challenge”, but i have to remind everyone that it will not be hard at all, for me.
one week with $36 to spend when i only ever eat dinner, as it is now.. too easy.

Cory Booker believes that poorly preforming school children are a result of not receiving enough tax payer provided nutrition. Which would be an agreeable point if it weren’t for the fact that taxpayers are already providing those children free/reduced breakfast &lunch at least 5 days a week. AND taxpayers are already providing those children’s parents with FOOD STAMPS on top of the free/reduced meals at school.

The problem is NOT money. The problem is with the parents. Until Cory Booker can be honest, how is anyone expected to take him seriously?

GIVE ME A BREAK! If FREE cereal or oatmeal isn’t good enough for children on FOOD STAMPS, then people like Kirstie Ally are OUT OF TOUCH with reality. What about those of US WHO DONT RECEIVE FREE ANYTHING? Cereal & oatmeal fills my public school children’s bellies before school and they’re both on the HONOR ROLL! this “for the children” shit, is just that- shit! I don’t have anymore money to give- the bottom of what is the REAL middle-class of America IS being sucked onto the welfare rolls. WAKE UP AND SEE REALITY KIRSTIE.

    • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

Yep. We got cereal in the mornings as well, before school. Bag lunch, and good dinner. Back in the 80’s, though… with 8 people in my family. 2 adults, 6 kids, with 5 of us kids in school at the same time.

    • Elena0412

In the county were I live schoolchildren get free breakfast, no matter what their families’ income is. They are also eligible for free or reduced lunches and summer “boxed lunches.” That leaves only ONE MEAL a day the parents are responsible for, which needs to be taken into account. A teacher acquaintance says that almost all the students in her middle and working class school get the free and reduced lunch, as no one verifies the information the parents provide. I often drive by the school in the mornings and see the queued up luxury SUVs waiting to drop off their free lunch recepients.

This is just conflating incredibly important issues about welfare abuse and entitlement funding with another liberal feel-good narrative. Just another distraction from important legitimate discussions that the grown ups SHOULD be having about these crushing debts and, of course, those emotion-centric sorts among us just eat it up! It’s how liberals keep getting their legislation passed.

Is this not food stamp fraud?

    • TwitWit

no- just using the equivalent amount out of our own pocket.

I dear sir. I live off 120.00 a month of food stamps.
One week is nothing but a drop in the ole bucket.

It doesn’t take long to get sick of Ramen Noodles.

    • TwitWit

i rarely eat lunch but when i do its Ramen Noodles or Cheezits. I receive absolutely NO assistance. Not being on food stamps does not = rich.

$5 a day for food? Sounds like college. Couple of pop tarts for breakfast, Ramen noodles for lunch, and a McChicken with a McDouble for dinner.

    • TwitWit

Remember, this is about kids who already receive free breakfast and lunch. ALL there freaking mother/father/whatever has to do is make DINNER & weekend meals!

Food stamps for a week? Ration of food stamps has to last a month people.

  • Joe W.

If you can’t feed your kids, you ought not have them. If you cannot afford to make babies, quit sleeping around. A novel approach would be to take a little responsibility for yourself and your actions. Think about it, folks. Since when is it government’s duty to take care of you and your issue??

  • orringtonmom (D)

so, wait… i just walk into the welfare office and ask for some food stamps for the “SNAP Challenge” and they will just give them to me? should i lie and say my name is kirstie alley? what the hell am i missing?

    • rivers

Not really that complicated, you just spend only what you would get on foodstamps.

      • orringtonmom (D)

        thanks for clarifying…

  • SwTk

    Dont do that again Twitch.

  • Elena0412

Food stamps are intended to subsidize the cost of food. Families on government assistance are eligible for free school breakfast and lunch. Many receive WIC as well.

  • HARP2

Kirstie could last a month without food and still shop in the plus size department

    • BamaG

Clearly you are a harpie – Miss Kirstie has battled her weight issues and is quite sexy indeed.

  • winoceros

They don’t seem to understand how it works. There is no”one week of food stamps.” There is only a monthly addition to a debit account to be spent at whatever pace the recipient wishes. Additionally, the allotment is dependent on the number of eligible people in the household, so what figures are Mr. Booker and Miss Alley intending to use? It is quite simple to eat healthily if there are several eligible people in a household. What is not easy is doing without purchased hot foods, including coffee, McDonald’s, hot chicken from the buffet, etc.
What is truly the difficulty, insofar as free money from other people is difficult, is cooking. Planning and cooking which is never mentioned as a primary cause of overspending on food.

    • BamaG

Exactly! I know of a lady, whom only has ONE son, age 20 – yet she gets $540 a month in stamps because she claims she supports her sons baby mama AND her grandson. NONE of whom live with her.
$540 a MONTH! I wish I had that much to spend for my family of 5! we eat a lot of rice and beans in this household, and we don’t buy soda. And the more kids a person claims, they get an additional $70 a month, I believe it is?
Cooking AND planning is key here – people just want to show up and have it made for them,

  • $30736095

A week on food stamps? What’s that gonna do????? If the mayor wants as realistic an understanding of what families on food stamps experience day to day between food stamp installments, shouldn’t he then construct the challenge to mirror that reality? I thought food stamps are given monthly?

What’s the point of this exploit again?

  • Guest

A week is nothing, he should do a month, well unless Obama gives him a Thanksgiving Food stamp bonus?

  • $23629333

I’m worried about Cory Booker. If he has Kirstie Alley with him eating only what food stamps will provide, he may not survive to the end of the week.

  • RIChris

It appears that Booker gave up on the challenge to reduce the need for families to rely on food stamps.

  • Jen

I’m confused…do we have a childhood obesity epidemic or not? If kids are under-nourished, seems to me that they wouldn’t be fat
