Actually if you live in the agriculture areas of the fly-over states, there are several publications – generally somewhat conservative publications, that are reporting the loss of bees a pollinators. So while its always fun to tease lefties, on this matter something should be done. Did it need to be at the presidential level? Probably not. But there is an issue nonetheless.

Bees, Chickens and Goats Now Illegal?

I believe we have over 100 communities in Michigan who have ordinances on the books against chickens and bees and other things, and they will be able to continue to move forward with those,” Jamie Clover Adams, the director of Michigan’s Department and Rural Development, told Michigan Radio.

Goats in Detroit is a sore subject around here.

      http://www.mlive.com/news/detroit/index.ssf/2014/06/18_baby_goats_headed_for_slaug.html

Idyll Farms planned to fatten the goats by feeding them the plentiful unmowed grass on abandoned lots in Detroit’s Brightmoor neighborhood throughout the summer before butchering them and selling the meet to raise money to sustain ongoing urban farming initiatives.

Since the city rejected the idea, Idyll farms says the baby goats will meet a premature demise and be butchered earlier than planned.

“The goats are currently grazing somewhere else, and will be gradually processed,” a representative for Idyll Farms told MLive Detroit in an email. “They cannot return to Idyll Farms because the goats there are in a closed herd and the herders never introduce animals from the outside (or even back into) the herd.”

Any excuse to launder the people’s cash.

  • Evie1949

Some plants have created a symbiotic relationship with a particular pollinator to ensure the survival of both species but this is in unusual circumstances. For the rest of the plant world, multiple pollinators exist. Bees are not required for any particular plant pollination. Birds, wind, flies, butterflies, moths and other such things, including furred animals are often the pollinators for plants. In FL, they keep telling us about the reduction in bee population while we hear about millions of the insects forming huge nests in houses. Sorry, folks but losing the bees will not end life as we know it – some other pollinator will pick up the slack. Bee-eater birds might have a problem.

    • H50 ✓RAT

Thats not the issue, the issue is government wasting valuable resources on a non issue when there are actual fish that need frying. Of course nature will find a way, she always does. Government intervention gets us things like killer bees tho and weve already got enough problems.

    • Nyota Uhura

Someone like Michelle, who lives in CA, would know better than me, but I read somewhere that the vast agricultural fields of CA depend on honey bees to keep filling the produce sections of the U.S. A lot of produce comes from other countries, true, but it’s my understanding that CA is the biggest domestic producer.

  • tops116 ✓Quipper

So, thanks to Obama, Democrats can’t talk about the economy, healthcare, taxes, equal pay for women, immigration, foreign policy, and anything else of importance to voters this year. But don’t worry, Democrats. You can talk about bees ahead of the midterms. Don’t you feel lucky?

    • H50 ✓RAT

Isnt this how we got killer bees? The hybrids were supposed to increase the bee population, but instead we got those unintended consequences of them killing of the regular bees and attacking people and animals.

      • Nyota Uhura

Too right. Here in Florida, we have “love bugs,” so named because they fly around in mated pairs, uh, well, mating. 😉 They were developed in a lab as something that would eat mosquito larvae, which they did in the lab, but as soon as they were released into the wild, they found “other stuff” to eat (they’re still not sure just quite what). Now all they do is swarm and get people’s cars all messy.

        • H50 ✓RAT

Ooops, there go those unintended consequences again. Wonder what its going to do to the eco-system long term.
They did the same thing here with fish, to protect the reefs. Unfortunately, they wouldnt eat the fish that feed on the reefs but they did devastate the population of fish that are a staple in our diets.
Keep waiting for Haleakala to erupt again. Mother Nature must be getting pretty irked with these arrogant humans that keep messing her up by now.

The lionfish is proving to be (bee? Now, though, people are discovering that lionfish taste pretty good themselves, so that’s a bright spot :)

          • Nyota Uhura

Yes, and here I’ll say something that may irk fellow conservatives — loving and respecting Nature should NOT be attributed just to “tree-hugging hippie leftists.” I’m conservative, but I’m passionate about our Earth and keeping her clean and healthy. Ticks me off that I sometimes get lumped in with crazy leftists when I make comments about this.

          • H50 ✓RAT

Very true. There is a big difference. Respecting nature is a way of life, tree hugging is a cause.
You rarely respect nature when your blinded by a cause. The tree huggers do more harm than good 9/10 times.
I dont know any conservatives that would disagree with respecting nature (especially hunters), I think sometimes the lines get blurred and folks have knee jerk reactions.

          • Nyota Uhura

Yep — “all conservatives are pro-big business, which doesn’t care about the land, polluting it with everything, Yadda-yadda”.

You are SO right to point out the distinctions. SOME conservative business owners guilty — some liberal ones, same.

The narrative nowadays is all, “conservatives bad, leftists good” regarding the environment.

This is one issue I so wish conservatives would claim as their own. We’d see a LOT more votes in the right direction.

          • H50 ✓RAT

            Amen on that.

This is gonna work out sooooo well. The Task Force will find the following:
    1. Private use of land is harming the ‘pollinators’ – remedy Dept of Ag issues regs backed by Obama EOs to clamp down on private use of land. No point in owning land the regs make it pointless. Therefore, if no one is looking after the land bring it under fed control. More fed owned land across all states managed by the BLM.
    2. Usage practices on private land that can’t be federalized will be found to be harmful to pollinators – remedy EPA issues regulations backed by Obama EOs which will make it impossible to use the land, especially for those who make a living from it. Govt position – land is now fallow and should be managed by BLM.
The peoples remedy – challenge the departmental regs in the Second Circuit (the only court that handles appeals againt govt administrative regulations). Ooops, no point going there. With the aid of Harry Reid and the new senate rules the court is now being stacked and will likely end up all democrat appointed in the very near future.
    So much for enumerated powers.

While it is a cause for serious concern, the disappearance of bees would NOT be the end of it all. It would certainly be a hardship, but not all food-bearing plants rely on them. Many cultivated plants can be artificially pollinated, some do not need pollination at all. Others are pollinated by wind, hummingbirds, or other insects. As for the loss of food entirely, that’s just silly. Grasses spread by the roots and are not dependent on flowering & pollen at all, and grass is the favorite food of some of our favorite food. MOO!!!!!

So yeah, let’s get on the stick and figure this out, but don’t let us let THEM turn this into another “OMG catastrophe is imminent and the only solution is One-World Marxism.”

Or the free market. But I don’t think we should object, in this case, to tossing a few federal bucks into research.

Totally agree with the free market.

Wisconsin, below (or above, depending on pageview) I said I thought CA agriculture depends on honey bees. Is this true?

      • H50 ✓RAT

Well the Central valley depends more on water, but Fienstien cut that long ago. #SaveTheSmelt
Not sure what the status is now, they import all our produce in by barge from Mexico now. Not sure if that has anything to do with CAs production or not.

        • Nyota Uhura

Yep, hoping someone from CA can enlighten.

          • nc ✓s & balances

Well, I’m a CA native, but I don’t know any more about it than you do, but I looked it up. Seems there was a big scare a few years back about the African “killer” Bee invasion (I remember hearing about that) but nothing seemed to come of it. However, in recent years they are now talking about this “bee colony collapse disorder:”

            http://www.csmonitor.com/Environment/Latest-News-Wires/2013/0216/Fewer-bees-in-US-threaten-almond-crop

            It’s important to

          • nc ✓s & balances

*darn ipad* It’s important to CA agriculture and especially the important almond industry because the bees are needed for pollination (see link in my post above for explanation).

There is a very interesting possible cause of this problem listed in this article. I’ve excerpted it below. Can you spot it?
            ———–

          • nc ✓s & balances

            *double darn ipad*
            ————-
Since it was recognized in 2006, colony collapse disorder has destroyed colonies at a rate of about 30 percent a year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Before that, losses were about 15 percent a year from pests and diseases. No one has determined its cause, but most researchers point to a combination of factors, including pesticide contamination, poor nutrition and bee diseases.

This year, experts say, the die-off has been as high as 40 to 50 percent for some beekeepers.

“We have smaller populations in the hives and higher winter losses,” said Eric Mussen, a bee specialist at the entomology department of University of California, Davis. “Bees across the country are not in as good a shape as last year. When you stress them far enough, the bees just give in.”

This year, Mussen said, many bees did not get enough nutrition because a Midwest drought reduced forage. Conversion of pasture land to corn production for ethanol also reduced the number of flowers producing nectar.

          • Nyota Uhura

Thanks, nc … I, for one, am worried.

But for Preezy to seize on this, of all things, to deflect from his rapidly “collapsing colony,” is just, well, wrong.

          • nc ✓s & balances

Agree 100%. Did he never hear of the word “delegate?”

          • Thale Taxurfeet

The most recent, concise update on the Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) I can find in short order is here at USNews & World Report. The previous link supplements this report from Science Daily, circa 2010.

I’d add some more yappage regarding similar bee colony collapse events throughout history, but I’m on an all too brief break from the honey-do list, hence the drive-by.

Guys, we have to stop reacting to this kind of thing. It’s plainly clear at this point that Barack Obama is just using the Executive Branch to troll the people of the United States.

He doesn’t want to be President. He doesn’t want to do anything Presidential. He hates his job. He hates his life. He hates his fat wife and forgettable children. He hates Congress. He hates The Constitution. He’s just DONE with it, guys.

But he’s stuck there. He can’t even quit because, first black something.

So, he’s trolling. That’s ALL he’s doing. He doesn’t care if WW3 starts or if theocratic despots start lobbing nukes at each other. He doesn’t care if the economy collapes or unemployment goes to 100%. He doesn’t care about women. He doesn’t care about gays. He doesn’t care about the environment. He’s DONE. He doesn’t. care. He’s washed his hands of all of it.

Look at every single thing he says and does from that paradigm from here on out, and it’ll make a lot more sense.

Dismiss him out of hand like you would any other stupid, petty, leftist troll.

    • Nyota Uhura

“Dismiss him out of hand like you would any other stupid, petty, leftist troll.”

This is the president of the United States.

    • H50 ✓RAT

Yea except for that whole executive power thing, hes not a troll on Twitchy or Twitter. He and his Administration has the power to impact/destroy our lives.
I get where your going with your post, but I think its more along the lines of dismiss him out of hand like you would any other troll at your own peril.

Weve passed the tipping point and it would appear that we are no longer a nation of laws (among many, many, many, other things), sorry but I just cant dismiss that.

      • AT

Short of open rebellion, what’s there to be done about it? Mid-term elections? He already doesn’t give a damn about Congress. He’s just going to continue to ignore them. There’s nothing that can be done about the fact that Barack Obama is the President of the United States, he has a long line of rejects in successive order, and ain’t nobody in Congress with the balls enough to dethrone the first black whatever. So, when he blathers on about the bees or his handicap at a Hawaii golf course, I’m just going to roll my eyes and say, “Idiot.”

Because what the hell else can you do.

Frankly, the best thing that could happen to Washington DC right now is a nuclear strike. Since apparently nothing is going to be done about Iran building one, the best we can hope is that they at least use it in the best place possible for Americans.

        • H50 ✓RAT

IMHO, Mid term elections are our last chance, so Im not ready to give up yet. Otherwise I think were done and yea, ya just gotta wait for the crash and be a survivor.
Right now, Im not thinking beyond that.

        • Maryland_Malcontent

I agree; it’s just not gov’t’s job to do it, at least not federal.

I have a family or 2 of Eastern carpenter bees that live near where I work. They are insanely huge, and completely harmless, if not ultra curious. I encourage the customers coming in and out about them, and inform them they are no danger.

      • http://www.GONINERS.com/ Kristine ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

I’m not one for gov’t intervention overall, or bigger gov’t, however in this situation? Dunno. The bee situation crosses state lines and affects the entire globe and our food.

Maybe the feds can goose the U.N. to do more. Just don’t know.

      • Dan13

Carpenter bees do a tremendous amount of damage in weakening structures. They’ve caused deck collapses that have killed people.

  • Ryan Schneider.

This actually is an important issue in the long run, and if a genuinely responsible president addressed it AFTER dealing with other, more politicaly visible priorities, then I would cheer the action. But this is just another red herring for him to distract the masses, regardless of it’s import.
