Just as the Republicans have their Rinos, I guess Democrats have their Dinos (this would go with the extinct theme I guess). In states where their fiscal polices are going to be voted for anyway, I would rather have one get elected that did not support all of their social policies.

There are over a billion Catholics world wide. They already knew the Pope’s position on abortion when he said “I am a son of the church” It’s not his fault liberals can’t understand plain English.

Church membership in 2011 was 1.214 billion (17.5% of the world )

That’s out of 7 billion people currently residing on the planet.

      • Leslie Lesaroo

They understand it. They don’t like it. And they fear the Pope. Their tactics are to try to create a different picture when it comes to highly influential people they don’t agree with. Especially a Pope that behaves so Christ like that even many on the left get the warm fuzzies watching his actions. When leftists are amazed at the actions of a Christian and can’t find a bad thing to say about him…and admire the amount of love in his heart…vile people in the media start to worry. Personally I thought the Pope’s words before and after he became Pope about defending life “even if they kill you” were very clear on his position. When the libs finally realized painting a different picture wasn’t working, now they try to make it seem like he was bullied by Conservatives… when Catholics know better. After watching the Pope stay so consistent in his loving actions, I don’t think it will make a dent in some lefties positive opinions of Francis. (as if any of it really matters anyway) But this is worrisome stuff for the likes of Reuters….the strong loving influence of Papa Francis…on even some LEFTIES! Woot! Go Papa!

It is not what “Catholics” believe that is important. Heresy is alive and well. It is what the CHURCH teaches. Read the Catechism of the Catholic Church if you want to know. Then search and read Evangelli Gaudium, The Joy of the Gospel. Which is what they pretend they are quoting. There are 288 paragraphs and 217 quotes. Many from previous Popes. Many from Benedict and JPII. When the liberal press realizes that Pope Francis is not saying anything very different they will try to destroy him as they did Pope Benedict.

If you want to know what the Catholic Church teaches read the Catechism. Depending on the interpretation of the liberal propaganda machine is not very informing. I appreciate his outreach to people on the left, but the left sees this as weakness and will use this to attack Christians.

          • http://a-star-of-hope.blogspot.com/ JoAnna Wahlund

You need to read the link I posted above. Here it is again. It explains how the Church’s teaching – as well as Pope Francis’ words (which accurately reflected the Church’s unchanging teaching) – is entirely Biblical. http://catholicstand.com/pope-francis-knows-the-difference-between-redemption-and-salvation-do-you/

But thank you for acknowledging that you are not able to prove that the Pope said what you claimed he said, and that the Pope did not, in fact, say anything contrary to Catholic teaching.

  • http://www.nleomf.org/officers/ FlatFoot

“The church sometimes has locked itself up in small things, in small-minded rules. We cannot insist on issues related to abortion, gay marriage and the use of contraceptive methods.” — Pope Francis [Sept. 2013]

First, abortion’s a “small thing”. Anti-Abortion’s a “small-minded rule”. Three months later, and now abortion’s somehow suddenly become “horrific”.
*sheesh* — make up your mind already, Pope.

    • bhhntr

Not so sure he is Catholic myself

      • http://www.nleomf.org/officers/ FlatFoot

Oh, he’s Catholic alright, and certainly the Pope, and apparently competing in a Popularity Contest. Hence, the waffles and the flip-flops and the pathetic pandering. He should have been a liberal politician rather than a liberal Pope. At least, that way, he could still waffle and flip-flop and pander, and barely anyone would even care.

But, lest we forget, he is a Catholic JESUIT after all, so his LEFTIST pandering is certainly going to be par for the course.

        • marylamb72

He is NOT “flip flopping” on anything. As per usual too many are getting their so called “facts” from the liberal press. Search and read Evangelli Gaudium, The Joy of the Gospel that they are quoting. When they(liberal media) finds that he is not saying anything new of substance, they will try to destroy him as they did Pope Benedict.

          • http://www.nleomf.org/officers/ FlatFoot

It’s right there. In front of your face. Yet, you selectively CHOOSE to ignore the truth… all of it it seems.

Who’re you calling ‘Liberal’? You’re the one living it.

        • AlmostaCowboy

Apparently, the Pope has forgotten who the Judge of his “popularity contest” is.

          • http://www.nleomf.org/officers/ FlatFoot

So it would seem. And if the Pope himself does not fear eternal damnation, why should anyone of us at all?

          • http://a-star-of-hope.blogspot.com/ JoAnna Wahlund

When did Pope Francis say that he does not fear eternal damnation?

          • marylamb72

Did he really say that he did not fear it or is that what the lame stream media TOLD you he said?

          • marylamb72

Nope! Cause if you read what he is REALLY saying and what previous Popes and the Catechism says you’ll fine he is probably laughing at the lame stream media. He has NOT said anything different in doctrine.

        • marylamb72

AND that is really pretty funny. WHICH church has stood FIRM on the issues? Surely not the PROTESTANT churches that just start a NEW one if they disagree with the one they are in. 30,000+ protestant churches. Don’t like what they say? START YOUR OWN. How “flip flop” is that? If you want to know what the Catholic Church teaches read the Catechism. THEN read the church fathers. The Catholic Church has been saying the very SAME thing for 2000 years.

          • http://www.nleomf.org/officers/ FlatFoot

…saying the very SAME thing for 2000 years.

            You mean like this…?

“The church sometimes has locked itself up in small things, in small-minded rules. We cannot insist on issues related to abortion, gay marriage and the use of contraceptive methods.” — Pope Francis [Sept. 2013]

Yeah, um, I don’t think so.

          • http://a-star-of-hope.blogspot.com/ JoAnna Wahlund

Actually, Pope Benedict XVI said something very similar – that we have to be careful not to focus on one issue at the expense of sharing the Gospel message. So, yeah, seems pretty consistent to me.

          • marylamb72

Um Yeah. Search and read Evangelli Gaudium. The Joy of the Gospel. That’s what most of the lamestreammedia is quoting. It has 288 paragraphs and Pope Francis quotes other Popes and Church documents 217 times in 288 paragraphs. He is NOT saying anything really NEW. Just that he has a GREAT delivery! God Bless you! You COULD read the Catechism of the Catholic Church too.

      • marylamb72

Search and read Evangelli Gaudium, The Joy of the Gospel that they are quoting. When they(liberal media) finds that he is not saying anything new of substance, they will try to destroy him as they did Pope Benedict.

        • http://www.nleomf.org/officers/ FlatFoot

It is indisputable. Pope Francis said these things, and many more. You simply just refuse to accept the Truth. Hypocrite. Go away.

          • marylamb72

“Search and read Evangelli Gaudium, The Joy of the Gospel that they are quoting. When they(liberal media) finds that he is not saying anything new of substance, they will try to destroy him as they did Pope Benedict.”
Did you? There were 288 paragraphs there. AND 217 attributed quotes to Pope JPII, Benedict and dating back centuries. He said these things but so did others. Just that the liberal media didn’t like the way it was delivered before.
            God Bless you.

      • http://a-star-of-hope.blogspot.com/ JoAnna Wahlund

Well, only baptized Catholic males can be Pope, so…

    • http://a-star-of-hope.blogspot.com/ JoAnna Wahlund

Context for the win! He’s not saying abortion is a small thing or a small minded rule. He’s saying that it’s wrong to focus on one issue at the expense of all others and ESPECIALLY at the expense of sharing the Gospel and loving our neighbor. Benedict XVI said much the same thing when he was Pope.

  • Edgar Castelo

Cursing back to those Lap-Dog Media idiots, Reuters sucks Marx’s dead balls.

  • denbren52

Pope, in a nod to his boss …

Pope, in obedience to God …

“I seriously can’t decide if the Reutuers headine is liberal bias or ignorant stupidity.” Is there a difference?

    • moi2u

…and A resounding NOComes from the audience!

  • Tuco

Certainly NOT to defend Philip Pullella or Reuters, but it’s no secret that many conservatives among the international Catholic clergy and laity have expressed some serious disappointment in Pope Francis for taking a MUCH softer stance on the topic of abortion-on-demand than his predecessor Popes.

As example, quoted from that same article: “Last year, Bishop Thomas J. Tobin of Providence, Rhode Island, spoke for many conservative Catholics when he said he was disappointed that the pope had not addressed “the evil of abortion” more
    directly.”

Also, apparently Reuters has already felt the heat about that clumsy headline and revised it to now read: “Pope, after conservatives’ criticism, calls abortion “horrific.”

So, what looked at first like a hilariously foolish gaffe on the part of Reuters may be a misfire; a tempest in a teapot after all — at least in this instance.

    • marylamb72

He did NOT take a softer stance on “abortion”. He was saying to have mercy on those who have HAD an abortion. He NEVER said that the horror of abortion was in doubt. IF you want to really know what HE said and not just the liberal media INTERPRETATION of what he said. Search and read Evangelli Gaudium, The Joy of the Gospel that they are quoting. When they(liberal media) finds that he is not saying anything new of substance, they will try to destroy him as they did Pope Benedict.

  • Onan Coca

They’ve updated it… likely because they realized they looked like idiots. It’s now titled Pope, after conservatives’ criticism, calls abortion “horrific.”

    • http://a-star-of-hope.blogspot.com/ JoAnna Wahlund

Which is equally stupid, because it implies the Pope is only calling abortion horrific because of the alleged criticism by conservatives — when the truth is that the Pope has always believed and taught that abortion is horrific because, HELLO, he’s a faithful Catholic.

  • checker99

“… in nod to conservatives …” WTF!?! How about in a nod to *REALITY*!!!

  • Frank Schoner

LMAO. Too funny. Liberals, in a nod to catastrophic brain damage, open their mouth.

  • AlmostaCowboy

I don’t know which is the more obscene, Reuters or the OMFG halftwit.

    • MandaLynne

I think the person making the OMFG comment was being facetious. :) But it is rather rude to use that acronym in association with the Pope.

      • marylamb72

I substituted “freaking”. Couldn’t even imagine the other word in connection to our Pope.

  • Michael R Bardsley

It’s ironic that not only does the POPE believe killing unborn baby humans is wrong, so does the God he serves. Crazy man… just crazy.

Oh that pope!! Always trying to placate us conservatives. Maybe he can get us to be reasonable about the murder of babies.

    • marylamb72

      LOL!!!
He won’t of course. NOR will he support same sex marriage, contraceptives or women priests. Wait till the lame stream media realizes it. Then they will try to destroy him like the did Benedict.

      • Lou Bator

Yep. Just waiting for the liberal imposed honeymoon to end. Then they will be after the Pope like hounds in a fury.

  • Jay Jay

Not shocking many are ignorant about the philosophy of Catholicism. It’s been demonized for so long. There are five non-negotiable principals for Catholics when voting (although MANY don’t follow them) if you call yourself a Catholic (if you want to be a Catholic) you CAN NOT support them or a candidate who supports them. 1) Abortion, 2) Euthanasia, 3) Fetal Stem Cell Research, 4) Human Cloning, 5) Homosexual “Marriage”

    • marylamb72

Another educated Catholic. I am sorry to say as unusual as a white unicorn.
TO CATHOLICS! Stop getting your information about your faith from the lame stream media! Our Sunday Visitor… Catholic Answer AND most importantly THE CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.
Please please please. Catholics! Get educated in your faith. Stop depending on those who HATE that faith for you information.
      God Bless you all.

      • Corey Dennison

Gee, thanks for the instruction. Any other Catechismal advice you’d like to give us?

Tone down the self-righteousness a bit and try to realize that you’re lumping us all together. You do realize that many of us are not liberal, right?

        • marylamb72

yes! READ IT! Have you? Or are you just being nasty because you feel stupid?

          • Corey Dennison

Yes I DO READ IT. I’m referring to your incredible condescension and need to deem yourself worthy to instruct all us poor lil’ ol’ Catholics who can’t seem to think for ourselves.

It sure is a good thing YOU came along to tell me, a conservative, life-long Catholic, what to think and believe. Whatever would I have done without you?

          • marylamb72

Well good for you! YAY! I was NOT telling you want to “think and believe” . AND I was not even ASKING if YOU knew what your CHURCH taught since this was a conversation between myself and Jay Jay. Are you feeling just a tad bit insecure? Dont’ BUT in to a conversation as if someone was speaking to YOU. Bad manners.

          • Corey Dennison

            I quote {ahem} “TO CATHOLICS

Hmmm…seems like you were addressing a rather large audience.

And further: “Please please please. Catholics! Get educated in your faith. Stop depending on those who HATE that faith for you information.

Now, I may be just a simple country boy, but it seems to me that the above missive by YOU, was intended to tell me (and all other Catholics, by the way) that we’re not smart enough to know where our beliefs and faith come from.

Do you have any clue how incredibly insulting and condescending your original post is?

I get what you’re trying to say, but geez, tone it down a bit! Again…many of us Catholics really are—honest-to-goodness—Catholic! You’re firing on your own team here.

Your heart is in the right place, but your delivery pretty much cancels out your message. No Catholics who frequent Twitchy (or other Conservative blogs) need to be told this by you.

          • marylamb72

SO if you are educated in the Catholic faith I was NOT addressing YOU. Good for you. GO forth! LOL
I just read so many who believe what the lame stream media tells them. The Catholic church HATES gays. The CC HATES women. The CC HATES well everything.
Just read a letter to the editor in OSV from a gal who says she “hopes the Catholic Church will “””hate the sin and love the sinner””””. Really? She has to “hope”. She would not have to just HOPE if she read the Catechism. The Church Fathers and the saints would not be amiss either.
That said Corey. I think God has given me a stiff neck(really, can’t turn my head) to address my “pride” issue. So go ahead, keep me in line. :)

          • Corey Dennison

Look…my apologies Mary—I came off a little rough, which I tend to do sometimes. Yes…we’re on the same side, and your desire to see more Catholics actually adhere to the Catechism, rather than act like ‘cafeteria’ Catholics is a worthy one. Just be careful not to turn too many people off by the delivery of that message. God Bless.

          • marylamb72

You are absolutely right. I tend to “go off” like Peter the rabble rouser. I will try to tone it down and like I said. It’s ok to give a bit of my own medicine.
            God Bless you too.

      • Lou Bator

You’re absolutely right! The CCC has all the information a Catholic would need about our faith. The media in this country is worthless, so there is no point in paying any attention to them. Just gotta get past the nabobs of negativism, and stay true to the faith.

  • Bob KT

If anyone needs me, I’ll be conducting research for next week’s shocking headline concerning the presence of bear scat in the forest.

  • Eddie frOly

Well I’m not surprised at the headline myself considering that most Catholics vote liberal anyway. They probably assumed that the Pope just had the same leanings as the people in his church that’s in the US anyway. The rest of the world I’m not sure how they vote but here it is liberal. Also I’m thinking it was held in a Catholic Church but it might have been some other denomination but just a few months ago like Oct or Nov there was a prayer press conference where they were thanking God that they could kill unborn babies. Look it up there is a video it from a news grew not satire or anything like that.

    • marylamb72

Please. Get a BRAIN! I can CALL myself a vegetarian and eat a big ol huge BEEF STEAK. Does that make me a vegetarian? People CALL themselves “Catholic” but if you want to KNOW what the church REALLY teaches read the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Just cause you SAY you are doesn’t MEAN you ARE! But then. That would fit the liberal agenda wouldn’t it?

      • Eddie frOly

Read what I said again and try your reply again. I didn’t say that’s what the Church teaches or that people who vote liberal were true to the Catholic faith. I was pointing out that the author was probably assuming from voting information here that the Pope would be the same. Something he should not have done. As for the people thanking God that they can kill babies again I didn’t say the Church was endorsing it. The press conference was held by Planned Parenthood and some Congress person or senator. As a Christian myself I understand that just because someone says they’re a Christian does not mean they are. The journalist is a total boob whose story flies in the face of reason in any country that has a real in partial media establishment.

        • marylamb72

“”””Also I’m thinking it was held in a Catholic Church but it might have been some other denomination but just a few months ago like Oct or Nov there was a prayer press conference where they were thanking God that they could kill unborn babies. Look it up there is a video it from a news grew not satire or anything like that. “””””
I was just saying makes no BLEEEKING differnence. They can CALL themselves “catholic” but they are NOT. THAT would be the point.

          • Eddie frOly

First let me say I’m sorry that I offended you that was not my original intent or the intention of my reply. Secondly can’t you see we are saying basically the same thing in a different way. As I also said I understand the whole just because someone calls themselves something doesn’t mean that they are. Like people who say they are Christian but spout of racism and other bigoted nonsense. They are not Christian in the least.

          • marylamb72

and I apologize for screaming. God Bless you.

    • Jay Jay

I agree Eddie frOly and Marylamb72. The mainstream media’s perception is that ‘all’ Catholics are liberal because many so-called Catholics usually vote Dem. There are several reasons for that but the biggy is JFK. Especially if you were a Boston Catholic. I think the problem is that they don’t bother listening to the fact that the Dem party has betrayed the values of their faith since JFK was assassinated as well as the values of their country (well Wilson, I believe, started the Dem party on the way to betraying the values of the Constitution it’s just picked up ridiculous speed recently). They choose to be (as Marylamb72 so rightly pointed out in other posts) uneducated on the truth of the doctrine of the Church. Pres. Reagan said, “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party. It left me.” Every “Catholic” Dem needs to truly ingest what he meant. You can not serve two masters. God or the Dems? They need to choose now since the fundamental values of the Dem party have become SO contrary to the beliefs on life the Catholic Church upholds. I believe there is a fracture in the Church. Many who call themselves Catholic refuse, 100% refuse, to follow doctrine. Therefore; they are not Catholic at all but they will not excommunicate themselves. I think they want to fundamentally transform it from the inside. Very insidious actually. Very much like how our country is under attack today. It is well known that the Church will be attacked from within as well as from the outside. Our strength is prayer. It was promised by Christ that the Church will never fall. “Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it;” St. Michael guards her. The enemies of the Church don’t stand a chance.

      • Eddie frOly

Completely agree and it’s not just the Catholic Church it’s all Christian Churches have this problem. People wanting to be more accountable to society than to the Lord.

  • ifgliyg iug;iugb

  • dewman55

I’m glad they finally cleared up the thing about it being a bear in woods, I was confused for decades.

  • DesertFlower

Sounds to me like a “newbee” headline writer was just trying to be clever, and perhaps indulge in a bit of rabble-rousing to call attention to the story. Pretty silly, really. It does demonstrate, however, the readiness of some people to overreact, iump onto something and turn everything into an “us vs them” conservative/liberal issue instead of having any sort of meaningful discussion. Regardless of the subject matter, the people who embrace the sports fan “pick up a banner, any banner, and wave it” theory of politics seem incapable of thinking beyond black/white, either/or sorts of reasoning, and that is truly a shame because it merely shows their ignorance and just how shallow their convictions really are. Fact: the Church’s stance on the sanctity of life from conception to natural death precedes any of the secular politics by at least two millenia. Anyone who has a broad knowledge of religion, history, the humanities or just plain common sense would know that.

  • marylamb72

Evangelii Gaudium, Joy of the Gospel, that the media has been misquoting and cherry picking from. Easy to search for it and read it yourself. This is what he thought of abortion BEFORE the so called criticism of conservatives.

Paragraph 213 “Among the vulnerable for whom the Church wishes to care with particular love and concern are unborn children, the most defenceless and innocent among us.”……
“every violation of the personal dignity of the human being cries out in vengeance to God and is an offence against the creator of the individual”

214…Precisely because this involves the internal consistency of our message about the value of the human person, the Church cannot be expected to change her position on this question. I want to be completely honest in this regard. This is not something subject to alleged reforms or “modernizations”. It is not “progressive” to try to resolve problems by eliminating a human life.

Reuters, in a nod to idiot liberals everywhere, reveals that Pope actually believes that God will have final say so on fate of people’s souls. LWNJ’s agast at such audacity!

  • Wise words …

Hussein Obama’s personal jihad against Christianity and civilization has gone so far as to call for the elimination of Catholic schools.

  • OldHaus

Is Reuters confused about this Pope (at least in the headline if not the story)? The Pope isn’t giving a “nod” to conservatives, he is a conservative(and not of the Romney “severely conservative” type). He doesn’t need to pander as they insinuate.

This tempest in a tea pot is for people who haven’t read the body of the story. It says some conservatives wanted to hear explicitly what the Pope thinks about abortion. So, there was some doubt about Francis I on abortion to some conservatives. Still, the Twitter headline was clumsy.

The Holy Father has said the same things about abortion and even homosexuality that his predecessors have, he’s only more gentle, calling on God’s grace when choosing his words. It’s a practice we could all learn from.
