Already the center of some controversy, Bob Bergdahl, the father of the American POW released in exchange for five Taliban prisoners, held an odd live press conference today. Fox News’ Shannon Bream live tweeted but Bergdahl seemed to raise more questions than he answered.

Truly strange.

It is and will be FOXnoise who is making him out to be the biggest hero since … your defense Queen (No Russian anything for me, thanks–worldwide boycott–so he can’t be a defense Tzar nor a Tsar this time, even in his imagination, since he’s never held any such position) John McCain got released after making some 30 videos for North Vietnam in exchange for his comfies.

YouTube really has a lot of vids from people who say he’s not a hero, he’s a traitor (McCain). They are easily found and quite convincing, with names, etc. You really think McCain, face of the hawk madness on the Right that enabled the war crime of invading Iraq needlessly and with malice aforethought, invited to every corrupted media networks’ Sunday morning propaganda session to spew the most extreme war-loving, war-inciting lies one can find anywhere on TV today, won’t back this loser too? You know better.

Yes, I served, answering an inevitable question, in the Army. I enlisted ’73, Vietnam-Era Vet (means Germany-based nuke warhead protection (radio telecommunications specialist, w/Morse Code!), not Vietnam for me…whew!). You?

I’m a leftie; a voting Democratic radical Queer, permanently disabled by chronic mental illnesses, now partially physically disabled 60-year-old single white male, living in California with two cats, only on the benefits from the Social Security Disability Insurance policy we all pay the premium for whenever we work legally. As well as the kindness of others.

I’m only responding to correct the record, though it’s fairly meaningless here I know. Your attempt to speak about ‘lefties’ has clearly fallen flat with such a misguided and incorrect collection of statements. I see that you’re not alone, of course, and it’s fun to see so many of you keeping up with the story, rooting for the side (which will be the ‘left’) NOT waving the flag and blessing the govt story–but you lucked out (?) randomly for this response.

Must be said. For example, for the lefties on the fields of battle in the Middle East and everywhere–I’m pretty sure they’re not supportive of terrorists as you falsely claim the leftie President of the United States of America is.

After all, we lefties are Americans, the volunteered targets, and we do live in America, the declared target nowadays. Terrorists won’t ask for your ticket to the Teabaggers’ Ball to see if you’re on their side with the American Taliban (christohet supremacists, neo-christian nationalists, religious political hucksters, etc.) before they trigger the action that ends you.

Don’t Enlist. Don’t Re-Enlist. Get Out ASAP. There is nothing the USA is doing as a last resort anywhere in the world right now. Don’t sacrifice your life and future for a horrible ‘good cause’ based on lies, profiteering, or faked, politically imagined hardlines.

Not the least bit surprising the left gets behind a deserter and not a soldier held captive in Mexico.

    • Hey, That’s Pretty Good

The left had no way of being able to free terrorists from GITMO by helping the Soldier in Mexico. That’s why Bergdahl was so important to the left, because they didn’t bring an actual soldier home, and they got to free terrorists

And yes libs, I accused Bergdahl of not being a true soldier since he went AWOL.

      • Juanita Garnto

And now he’s saying he doesn’t understand english because of his captivity. Appears to me he doesn’t want to answer questions. We’ve had Vietnam POWs, they never forgot english, I think he’s full of it and this was a planned desertion, and the family knew about it before hand.

          • http://youhavetobethistalltogoonthisride.blogspot.com/ keyboard jockey

The reason they moved up the trade for his release is because his health is failing and it’s been reported he broke down and cried on the helicopter that brought him out. That’s not the actions of someone enjoying their captivity.

It’s also been reported that he has tried to escape more than once. Once in the past when the group that were holding him were hit by a US attack, and some of his captors died but they managed to track him down and re capture him.

Trying to escape multiple times from his captor’s is not the sign of an enemy sympathizer.

            http://www.theblaze.com/contributions/negotiating-with-terrorists-inside-the-capture-and-release-of-sgt-bowe-bergdahl/

As for desertion that’s got to be determined. Given the report that he went over the wall to socialize with a couple of the Afghan army members he was seen leaving with off base. That’s got to be at least against orders, and possibly dereliction of duty?

          • Chrissy the Hyphenated

It could be the sign of someone who thought he’d be celebrated and important, then found out what living in the real Afghanistan is actually like and missed the comforts of clean clothes, running water, and … you know … all that arrogant stuff they have in places like Idaho.

Did he think he was on an adventure in Afghanistan on the Army’s dime? That’s why when he was sending the anti military emails, he was rebellion from not being able to have the freedom to go have the adventure he originally came to Afghanistan for? Who knows, but I get the over all impression that he was very immature. I think he paid dearly for his early immature attitude.

          • http://youhavetobethistalltogoonthisride.blogspot.com/ keyboard jockey

It’s not about seeing it – it’s about what the official military record is going to reflect. Hagel hasn’t closed the door but he keeps talking sympathetically about reuniting him with his parent’s.

            The Army isn’t a democracy.

          • scotsman1207 @aol.com

i don’t know where you get your information, but i tend to believe the guys who served with him and they say he’s a deserter.they had to sign non-disclosure agreements to last as long as he was in captivity. now that he is free they are telling their truth. i have no doubt he would try to escape when he found out they wouldn’t treat him like a celebrity for deserting

          • Juanita Garnto

Leaving your post against orders in a combat zone is desertion. Calling back to unit 24 hrs later to tell them you deserted is proof of desertion. Helping Taliban to build bombs is aiding the enemy. These are court martial offenses. This is from the Army Times and The Pentagon. If I was more computer savvy I’d give you the links. But if you’ve been in service you know your general orders, and he violated them.

          • http://youhavetobethistalltogoonthisride.blogspot.com/ keyboard jockey

I am not disagreeing – but this isn’t what’s transpiring. If you listen to Hagel all he talks about is reuniting Bergdahl with his family as in that’s all that’s important. I don’t get it either why the sympathy for someone who obviously was not doing their duty put other’s in danger and got people killed trying to rescue him. I suspect they will find something wrong with him -some psyche diagnose to get him out of any charges. They just don’t look like they have any interest in prosecuting him like he deserves. If you listen to the media they are already making excuses for Bergdhal, PTSD maybe. It think there is a fix in.

Of course the solider who shot those civilian’s in Afghanistan was found guilty, and he had a defense he actually had head trauma, and was sent back to duty.

    • Linda

The situation does get more bizarre. At this point, I’m thinking that dad has lost it. I hope the father’s actions aren’t held against the son. I remember reading that one of the townsfolks said that the son wanted to help the people of Afghanistan by joining the Army. So until there is concrete evidence otherwise, I’m going to assume that it was a good intention to join the service in the hopes that our presence there helped the people.

      • Utopia Can Never be Achieved

Did the father convert to Islam after the son went AWOL? I’m trying to put together a better timeline here.

Me too because this is weird. And my brother is Muslim so I’m not saying Muslims are terrorist. But this situation looks troubling to as far as the President helping terrorist. But, I’ll reserve judgment until I learn more. Even though we never get truth from this gov’t.

        • Linda

I’m not certain that there is a timeline per se. It seems that he started growing the beard when his son was taken, to show solidarity with him. Then he learned the terrorist’s language so he could try to convince them to free his son. His tweets before the release were strange but would fit into the scenario of him trying to act conciliatory. But, to continue the bizarre tweets is not nearly as understandable.

I think a lot of the Dad’s appearance and speech was for his son’s benefit a show for the terrorist – tell them whatever they want to hear to keep his son alive and to get his son back. If he keeps it up since he’s been released then I question his motivation.

Idaho is like Afghanistan in that you have a certain contingent of people living in the hills who could basically give a rat’s ass what any authorities tell them, they’re going to do it their way no matter what. When “doing it their one way” involves proactively going out and shooting defenseless people who don’t believe in God as you define Him to be, your “fierce proud independent mountain man” lifestyle crosses a line, and is not to be lauded, but rather, condemned and crushed.

I daresay there’s a $#!tload more of the “Silence– I kill you!” types in Afghanistan, by countless orders of magnitude– but I’m still none too thrilled with the idea that there ARE a handful of those in Idaho, albeit Christian-identity and not Muslim, who just haven’t started the indiscriminate (no pun) shooting yet.

What is the mainstream media in the US saying about all of this? I can find little to nothing in mainstream tabloids online. (I live in Australia).

It appears to be just another blatant confirmation that The President Bat Olarma is a Muslim sympathiser, if not a covert Muslim. How can this be ignored? Deserters were once shot, yet now a President is not just rescuing one, but publicly feting one, one who fraternises with and supports enemy interests – giving credence to the tweet to release all Guantanamo prisoners.

What is wrong with the US press? Are they dolt-headed and so married to their political affiliations that they will sacrifice their nation’s interests for them? (These media leftist luddites will be the destruction of us all.)

    • dubbs

It takes the media a little more time than expected to change all of the words in the articles from hero to traitor.

If the media fail to question this in the US, then there is something seriously wrong, and not just within the White House.

If Bergdahl’s father spoke a line in Yiddish instead of Arabic and Pashto, would the conservative blogosphere be raising a fuss over his two non-English sentences?

    • dubbs

The reason for the concern over the language thing is that there is probably some complicity between the family, their son, and the Taliban. This soldier is probably a deserter and a traitor. Wait and see.

    • nc ✓s & balances

No, and if he had spoken a line in French no one would have cared either. Try to focus.

    • crella

If he’d said ‘Allah is merciful’ in Yiddish, yes, most likely. It’s the content, not only the language!
“bism allah alrahman alraheem” – which means “in the name of Allah the most gracious and most merciful”

If he’s trying to communicate with a son who has forgotten English, what kind of a message is that for him? The father said in English ‘I am your father’ and ‘I love you’ but what he said in Arabic was praise for Allah.

  • 50 Shades of Pissed Off

We wasted our precious time looking for him in 2009. We almost stumbled upon him in July, 2009 and got into a 45 minute firefight due to local fighters thinking that we were there for him. We took two WIA that day. I don’t mean to sound like a heartless bastard but “F THAT GUY!!!” He walked away from his unit and FOB. He wasn’t left behind during a patrol. I hope he is prosecuted! Now we are known to the world as terrorist negotiators. Great job Mr President! I’m sorry about my rant but I have very strong feelings about this guy and situation.

    Here are some words from someone who was there;

Forwarded from Jeff Howard. “We were at OP Mest, Paktika Province, Afghanistan. It was a small outpost where B Co 1-501st INF (Airbone) ran operations out of, just an Infantry platoon and ANA counterparts there. The place was an Afghan graveyard. Bergdahl had been acting a little strange, telling people he wanted to “walk the earth” and kept a little journal talking about how he was meant for better things. No one thought anything about it. He was a little “out there”. Next morning he’s gone. We search everywhere, and can’t find him. He left his weapon, his kit, and other sensitive items. He only took some water, a compass and a knife. We find some afghan kids shortly after who saw an american walking north asking about where the taliban are. We get hits on our voice intercepter that Taliban has him, and we were close. We come to realize that the kid deserted his post, snuck out of camp and sought out Taliban… to join them. We were in a defensive position at OP Mest, where your focus is to keep people out. He knew where the blind spots were to slip out and that’s what he did. It was supposed to be a 4-day mission but turned into several months of active searching. Everyone was spun up to find this guy. News outlets all over the country were putting out false information. It was hard to see, especially when we knew the truth about what happened and we lost good men trying to find him. PFC Matthew Michael Martinek, Staff Sgt. Kurt Robert Curtiss, SSG Clayton Bowen, PFC Morris Walker, SSG Michael Murphrey, 2LT Darryn Andrews, were all KIA from our unit who died looking for Bergdahl. Many others from various units were wounded or killed while actively looking for Bergdahl. Fighting Increased. IEDs and enemy ambushes increased. The Taliban knew that we were looking for him in high numbers and our movements were predictable. Because of Bergdahl, more men were out in danger, and more attacks on friendly camps and positions were conducted while we were out looking for him. His actions impacted the region more than anyone wants to admit. There is also no way to know what he told the Taliban: Our movements, locations, tactics, weak points on vehicles and other things for the enemy to exploit are just a few possibilities. The Government knows full well that he deserted. It looks bad and is a good propaganda piece for the Taliban. They refuse to acknowledge it. Hell they even promoted him to Sergeant which makes me sick. I feel for his family who only want their son/brother back. They don’t know the truth, or refuse to acknowledge it as well. What he did affected his family and his whole town back home, who don’t know the truth. Either way what matters is that good men died because of him. He has been lying on all those Taliban videos about everything since his “capture”. If he ever returns, he should be tried under the UCMJ for being a deserter and judged for what he did. Bergdahl is not a hero, he is not a soldier or an Infantryman. He failed his brothers. Now, sons and daughters are growing up without their fathers who died for him and he will have to face that truth someday.”
    This is the truth

  • soxfan4evah

Idaho is so much like Afghanistan? So they have chai boys, stone women and behead homosexuals?

  • DutyFirst

So let me get this straight. During the second war, while my uncle was held captive in Changi prison as a POW by the Japanese for over 3 and a half years my mother and her parents should have learned Japanese, changed their appearance to be more Japanese to show solidarity with him and attempt to treat with the Japanese on his behalf. Hmmm, I think that would have got them in shed load of trouble with their neighbors and the government. My, how times have changed.

Was it something the CIA guy could have found out about this whole thing with the releases?

So we’ve got a guy that deserts to join the Taliban and ends up their POW for 5 years. We got his father who seems more concerned about Gitmo terrorists and their families than his own son and Americans.
We’ve got a preezy, whom we’ll call preezy Stompy Foot, who trades 5 high level Taliban commanders for a guy that WANTS TO BE one of those Taliban commanders and…. the debate seems to center around a general lack of notification to Congress.

Just too much going on here.

  • disappearing moderate

I can understand a man learning the language of his son’s captors in an attempt at creating a dialogue. Same with tweeting and retweeting messages that appear to be sympathetic to the Taliban. People will do just about anything for their children. Now that the captivity is over, I don’t understand his continuing defense of the Taliban and his desire to free all Gitmo detainees. I can only assume his stance is unfortunately for real. No idea if he managed to self radicalize in an effort to understand the situation or whether his views are long held. Everything about this deal is shady and stinks to high heaven.
