Not only is Ron Paul disgusting and shameful, he’s uninformed and wrong about post-traumatic stress disorder, too.

So are all of these other amateur psychiatrists who think they know something about PTSD:

Former U.S. Army Ranger Sean Parnell addressed this point during an appearance on Fox and Friends this morning:

A lot of people are asking why are you taking somebody that’s  struggling out to go shooting. Well shooting for guys like us in the military is a very, very familiar skill set. It’s like taking a basketball player out to shoot hoops, you know. And so, shooting with military veterans that are trying to re-adjust can be very healing, and Chris [Kyle] really used that well to his advantage to help people.

Many Twitter users, including a number of veterans, also set the record straight:

Bingo.

  • V the K

Right, because, as every psychiatrist knows, the last thing you want a patient to do is confront his fears.

  • tjcuzns

Incredible the arrogance of some people that are clueless about PTSD. It is also infuriating to hear the complete ignorance of our elected officials.

  • daphnetaggart

Personally, I’m more concerned about the “lives by the sword, dies by the sword” statement, which I found pretty darned insensitive.

    • V the K

Just wait until the Ronulans show up to lecture us about how, if we weren’t all statist tools of the Zionist Neocon conspiracy, we would recognize the comment as pure wisdom.

LOL… “Frosted Lucky Charms, they’ll blow your a$$ to pieces”. Sorry, the ‘Fruiton torpedos’ gave me the mental image of someone blowing an entire case of Froot Loops out of a torpedo tube…which of course led me to think of my favorite snack cereal (Lucky Charms!)

Sadly, I know you’re not joking. I’ve had more than one Ronulan pull that one on me. A few more of their usual playbook canards and I would have had Paulbot Bingo, too. Shucks.

Ron Paul has lost any credibility he had with people who didn’t give him any credibility.

  • BeyondPolls

News to me, but I learned something today. :)

  • Jeremy Kester

hundreds of tweets and comments about how people disagree with his statement.
    ok.
That’s the entire story. He said something and people disagree. Am I missing something larger here?

Why concern yourself with the opinions of others in matters that you find trivial?

I just enjoy any excuse for people to dog pile on Ron Paul. He does, after all, make it so easy sometimes…..Senile old anti-semitic twit!

I can hear it now from the Paulistinians,
    “…but, but,…Ron Paul has delivered a million babies……he’s a doctor!”

  • John (it true me am)

I give you Ron Paul. The supposedly right wing choice of contrarian left wingers everywhere.

  • Clover11111

He might have been looking at the irony of it given that the man made his living in part, by teaching people to shoot post military. Still, some things are better left unsaid and this was one of them.

  • drschuetz

I am so sickened by this and the many other vile comments from either the left or the uninformed about this tragic death. When did the people of our nation become so insensitive that we took public pleasure in the death and/or murder of another human being? It wasn’t that long ago that any American would respond with sympathy at hearing of the tragic end of another’s life. Has Obama brought in THAT much hate, or has this been going on longer than his rise to power, and I just didn’t notice it?

    • Harry A

i find Ron Paul’s comment’s disgusting as well, but why are we trying to blame even this on Obama. Ron Paul is clearly separate from and no fan of Obama, this story has nothing to do with him !

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1280676990 David Hazi

Lots of people took pleasure with the fact that Kyle killed 150+ people. Sort of a hypocritical comment on your part Sharon.

      • Matt Thrift

Yeah, like me. The difference is Kyle wasn’t out to force Islam on the world or terrorize a country into submission. Saddam had a very long history of brutalizing his people and exporting terror. Kyle helped put an end to his reign. You wanna argue the morality of that?

  • V the K

Anyone else suspect @RonPaul is an agent of the Bilderberger Global Conspiracy on a mission to discredit the Libertarian Movement?

    • Saddlebum

I sure hope you meant that to be funny, cuz I’m ROTFL!

      • V the K

That’s just what *they* want you to think.

  • $27789750

It would be nice to hear from experienced PTSD professionals about this issue..

    • BrokenRT

No better pro than the ones living with it that are telling us that it does in fact work for them! Read the dozens of comments above from vets with PTSD!

  • Maxx

There will be no shortage of people who, by decree of broadband connection and a Twitter account, will declare themselves experts on PTSD and thus bemoan the range visit of our returning warriors. This was a tragedy, no doubt, but an isolated tragedy. The exist a great number of vets, both with and without PTSD, who frequent the range for the very same reason others play in softball leagues or go golfing.

The bible again misunderstood: “live by the sword, die by the sword” means if you kill without reason, that is probably the fate that awaits you. There is nothing wrong with defending yourself. In fact Jesus and Paul never tell any Centurion to put down their weapons, just live Godly lives.

  • http://twitter.com/1RandiStarr Randi Starr

Ron STFU last time I checked your specialty was OB-GYN.

  • An American Veteran

I am so upset with Ron Paul, I supported him gave to his campaign, there was no reason to include live by the sword die by the sword. He could question why someone with PTSD was at a gun range but he is a Veteran and should have thought about this tweet and the repercussions a statement like that could have.

The Gun Range Chris Kyle was at with Combat Veterans was safer than Fort Hood.

A PTSD Doctor at Fort Hood, Major Nidal Hasan, shot and killed 13 Troops and wounded 29 Troops in November of ’09.
Just goes to show you cannot trust Military Doctors past or present…. especially the batsh*t crazy ones

  • Ellis Reyes

You can’t expect a non-shooter to understand the mental discipline, focus, and peace that can be found while putting rounds downrange.

  • sqeptiq

I find shooting relaxing, too, but I avoid going shooting with loony tunes. Sorry Chris Kyle went out to the range with Eddie Routh, and sorrier still that a number of people want to give Routh a pass because of mental illness. People with mental illness deserve empathy and treatment, but they have a responsibility to seek treatment when needed, and not commit crimes. Screw Routh. He deserves the death penalty.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1280676990 David Hazi

Just because exposure therapy is effective for some, doesn’t mean it is effective for all. Was Chris Kyle a licensed psychiatrist? If not, did he consult with a psychiatrist at all before allowing this person to be around live fire? If he didn’t, then this was an extremely dangerous and reckless act on Kyle’s part.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002109532283 Jillane Kent

      Victim shaming, much?
It is now quite common for returning vets to be placed into contact with other veterans as they better understand the issues servicemen go though after returning home.

  • Matt Thrift

Shooting requires focus, concentration etc. you have to get yourself in a somewhat relaxed state. It’s like meditating. That’s a good thing when you’ve got so much tension. Do we know exactly what happened yet? If he flipped it wouldn’t have been safe playing golf with the guy or playing with barbies as Dr. Paul would probably prescribe. How about fishing with all that water and those sharp objects.

  • Andy Maul

The killer had more than PTSD, he was suicidal. He told his family that he wanted to kill them and “blow my brains out”. On taking this particular veteran to the range was not a good thing to do. The rest of Ron Paul’s comments went over the line of tastefulness.

  • Kenneth James Abbott

Remember, this is the guy the Paul-Aid Drinkers tried to tell us was the only candidate the military supports, and the only guy who really supports our troops.

He had to leash himself during the elections, or give up even the small pretense of subverting the primary vote he had… but now, like Obama, he has more flexibility….

  • cajuncocoa

And some people drive drunk, but that doesn’t make sense either.

  • Thomas Clayton Thomas

Funny how most of those critiques of Ron Paul came for veterans, not doctors, as Ron Paul most certainly is (both actually). There is a lot of evidence showing that “flooding” or “exposure” therapies are indeed helpful to those suffering from PTSD. And that is great! But there is also evidence that treating in this manner can result in a psychotic break. I actually researched this before posting because I am not a licensed psychotherapist (and will point out here, that neither was Kyle). So let’s assume that the odds are 1 in 100 (or even 1 in 1000) that this therapy results in psychotic break. Ask yourself, would you want to be at the same firing range with an amateur practicing exposure therapy on a vet with PTSD? Would you at least want to know that such an experimental therapy was occurring there? Would you want to be in the booth beside this supposed therapist and patient? Or would you pack up your things and come back another day? Every site I have looked at maintained that such therapy should only be done in controlled conditions (usually beginning with a virtual environment) and should slowly work their way up to as much stress as the patient can handle, and then, only under the supervision of a licensed experienced psychotherapist. I don’t believe Kyle meets these standards, and anybody that said “Yes, take me to a firing range with two ex vets experimenting with exposure therapy” is a liar.
