Reuters:

Swiss soccer player Michel Morganella was expelled from the London Olympics on Monday for sending a racist message on Twitter after his team’s defeat by South Korea, the Swiss team said.

“He discriminated, insulted and violated the dignity of the South Korean football team and the South Korean people,” Swiss team chief Gian Gilli told reporters.

Unhelpfully, Reuters does not say what Morganella tweeted. Via @LesNews, we believe we were able to find a transcription of the offending tweet:

Screencap here.

The racist part seems to be the last few words — “bande de triso.”  If you understand French slang, please leave a comment below or drop us a note at [email protected]

I believe that the reference is like calling someone with Down Syndrome a “mongoloid.”  I believe that is a reference to the facial features of a person with Down Syndrome or the condition Isabella Santorum has.  It is a racial slur against Asians, especially Koreans based on their facial appearance.

No. Mongoloid is a reference to one of three old physical anthropologist classifications of identifying ethnicity. Like Caucasoids, Negroids and Mongoloids.

It’s an outdated reference and has nothing to do with any type of retardation. Perhaps the Lebanese should be reprimanded as well for demanding a wall to separate them from the Israeli team based on the Lebanese and their antisemitism.

Read the dictionary before you correct people’s definitions, you massive pseud: Mongoloid:

        A. adj.
        1. Resembling or having some of the characteristic physical features of Mongolians; spec.designating or relating to the division of mankind including the indigenous peoples of eastern Asia, South-East Asia, and the Arctic region of North America, who are characterized by dark eyes with an epicanthic fold, pale ivory to dark skin, straight dark hair, and little facial and bodily hair. 2. Also mongoloid. Affected with or characteristic of Down’s syndrome. Now generally regarded as offensive.
        B. n. 1. A person of Mongoloid physical type. 2. Also mongoloid. A person affected with Down’s syndrome. Now generally regarded as offensive.

Mike, I was a kid in the 50s & 60s. Mongoloid was the most common term I heard to describe what is now called Down’s Syndrome. I’d say I stopped hearing it by the early 80s. It wasn’t considered an insulting term then, that was usually done with “retard.”

Perhaps not used as an insult, but still a derogatory term. Anyway, he didn’t even use the word ‘mongoloid’ but some French/Swiss slang which seems to have no direct translation from the news reports I’ve read so I suppose we’re making a fuss about nothing

Using babelfish it gave this as the translation – Michel Morganella tweet translation: “I broke all Koreans,” go all you burn. Ahaha… band of tristoctahedrons (English)

    • http://twitter.com/drefman Dref

What I got was slightly different:

“I broke all the Koreans, will all burn you. “Ahaha… band of tristoctahedrons”

Doesn’t even make much sense, but it is Babelfish we are talking about.

I’m just guessing; the phrase could mean a group of morons or ugly people

He actually tweeted: «Je fonsde out les coreen allez sout vous lebru…deban zotre» which is written in the French SMS (texting language) so it is harder to translate. From an article I have read in French (http://www.20min.ch/ro/jo2012/story/19268436), it appears that even they are not sure if the “bande de triso” translation is close. However, this article (http://thenextweb.com/insider/2012/07/30/another-athlete-has-been-expelled-from-the-olympics-for-a-racist-tweet/) translates the whole thing as “I f*** all Koreans, go all burn yourselves. Ahahahaha bunch of ‘tards.” It’s insulting, to say the least.

  • torpedoman2002

According to PROMT translator it says “I break all Koreans down, are going to burn you all. Ahaha bandages triso”

  • D3LN3GRO

    via Bad Translator…

Original text:”Je fonsde out les coreen allez sout vous lebru…deban zotre”…35 translations later, Bing gives us:”In a country where they’d Fonsd Zotr Korea Lebr.”

    • D3LN3GRO

      or…

Original text:”Je défonce tous les Coréens, allez tous vous brûler. Ahaha… bande de triso.”…35 translations later, Bing gives us:”Dose br, (d) and (3) Campo Grande congratulations Tristoctahedron hat.”

Good heaven’s man, when are we gonna grow up?!? Stick and stones may break my bones but WORDS will never hurt me. What a bunch of stupid cry babies! OOPS! Did I offend because I called them stupid or babies? This has just gotten ridiculous.

    • http://twitter.com/thetugboatphil TugboatPhil

Mike, you should also apologize for implying that sticks and stones are inherently violent. The inanimate object lobby is outraged.

  • tomtom1983

So the Lebanese can demand a wall to be placed between them and the Israeli team because of their antisemitism with no problems, but this Swiss makes a comment over twitter, via social media and he is acused and barred from the Olympics.

  • Wag_a_muffin

Well, I speak Swiss (like the President speaks Austrian) and I say the tweet says, “Rats! We played like creme brulee. I’m going to go eat some twizlers and cry.”

  • Dennis the Dreamer

racist or not dont care. unless you are in a commie country you are’nt allowed for free speech. if this happened in china all the tweets and complaints are being censored.
