Swiss soccer player expelled from Olympics for allegedly racist tweet

Reuters:

Swiss soccer player Michel Morganella was expelled from the London Olympics on Monday for sending a racist message on Twitter after his team’s defeat by South Korea, the Swiss team said.

“He discriminated, insulted and violated the dignity of the South Korean football team and the South Korean people,” Swiss team chief Gian Gilli told reporters.

Unhelpfully, Reuters does not say what Morganella tweeted. Via @LesNews, we believe we were able to find a transcription of the offending tweet:

Screencap here.

The racist part seems to be the last few words — “bande de triso.”  If you understand French slang, please leave a comment below or drop us a note at [email protected].

Reader @JJMandler writes:

I believe that the reference is like calling someone with Down Syndrome a “mongoloid.”  I believe that is a reference to the facial features of a person with Down Syndrome or the condition Isabella Santorum has.  It is a racial slur against Asians, especially Koreans based on their facial appearance.
