Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas appeared on ESPN’s “First Take” this morning. But instead of focusing exclusively on the 16-year-old gymnast’s incredible accomplishments, Twitter users say host Cari Champion tried to bait Douglas into feeding the media’s beloved racism narrative.

Douglas, who certainly faced her share of race-based criticism from fellow black women during the Olympic games, didn’t take the bait. When asked she was tempted to quit because of racism, she told Champion it was actually because she was homesick.

Gabby shows a lot of maturity for her age! I’m looking forward to seeing her in many international & Olympic events in the future!!!

    • Steve_J

Much more maturity than ESPN showed or ever shows.

She has an adorable smile, like she really is a happy person! Love it.

If it’s possible I love Gabby Douglas even more. She’s an amazing gymnast and an amazing young woman.

  • stuckinIL4now

Good for Gabby for remaining true to herself and who she is and not letting the media vultures push her around. The ExtraordinarilySnarkyPinheadNetwork is despicable.

    • bradheidbreder

what did we expect from a channel that gave us dan patrick and keith olbermann?

  • Cold War Grunt

Well, the wife will be happy … no more ESPN in my house.

    • 83champ

      I quit years ago.

    • Nick Noneya

Everyone should quit cable altogether. It does nothing but rot your mind while employing and lining the pockets of communist liberals who have stolen our country from us.

  • Matt

Constantly wish there was a sports network alternative to ESPN. There’s plenty of racism from the black commentators – check out criticism of Teebow – its all “well if a black quarterback sucked that bad, he wouldn’t be getting any press”. That moron on Pardon the Interuption went on a pro-Bob Costas rant the other night and basically told anyone who didn’t like it to stop watching. I stopped watching. Hey, I know I personally can’t wait for the special where Obama makes his NCAA picks- I remember all the times they had specials for George Bush’s picks… oh wait, no I didn’t.

    • Rich

FOX is working on it. Trust me. ESPN will be CRUSHED.

      • PeteRFNY

CBS Sports is also working on a 24/7 sports network. The days of ESPN monopolizing the network sports market are slowly coming to an end.

        • http://twitter.com/louv29 Dawn

LOL, do you really think CBS will be better? NOT!

        • Kelly England McDonald

CBS?? You mean the Communist “News” Service?? What will they be showing soviet lady weight lifters!!!??

      • http://twitter.com/groinksan Alan Tuttle

I beg to differ. Costas was inspired by Fox Sports’ Jason Whitlock. All sports channels are part of the problem.

  • Danny Wheeler

    Race card epic fail!

Just another attempt by Disney to push a divisive agenda. Walt Disney was a great American who pushed family friendly entertainment and railed against communism. He was boycotted and black-balled for saying it was dangerous to have one small portion of the population controlling such a large portion of our media. He would be ashamed of what his company has become. His family was forced to give up control of the company to the very people that he feared would bring America down, now every outlet owned by Disney is nothing more than a propaganda tool for socialism.

        Plus, Chicago.

(No, no, trolls: let me. Raaaaaacist!)

  • Will Comerford

This might have something to do with the fact that she told Oprah she felt bullied and isolated at her gym, possibly because of her race. (Paraphrased.) I’m not siding with First Take here, but it’s not like they just pulled this out of thin air.

    • Michael Rice

Or possibly because it normal bullying. Did she say she was bullied due to race? If not, teh questions was, at least, badly phrased.
Why not ask, did race have anything to do with the bullying so experienced? Noooo, let’s bascially answer the questions for her and hope she doesn’t dispute it..

    • Vennoye

Gabby said: During the interview with Oprah, she revealed that she was bullied during her early training at a gym in Virginia Beach, Va. She said, “I was just, you know, kind of getting racist jokes, kind of being isolated from the group. So it was definitely hard. I would come home at night and just cry my eyes out.”

I love this girl. Loved her story and performance. What an awesome young women.

  • BeyondPolls

    You go Gabby.
Where was ESPN when the Lebanon Olympic Team refused to be near the Israel Olympic Team? We have a Jew (whom this Muslim bigotry affects) on our women’s gymnastics team and they’re trying to create a racism narrative!

  • Cunning_Linguist

How has it gotten to the point hippies have even taken over sportscasting?

    • Silenttype78

      Yes.
I told my husband that at the rate we are heading that in 10 years football as we know it will no longer exist. It will be reduced to flag football played by teams made up of an equal number of male and females.

      • Finrod Felagund

They’re even talking about eliminating kickoffs now. This from the same organization that won’t even encourage their players to wear 21st century helmets that are much better at protecting from concussions.

  • http://twitter.com/groinksan Alan Tuttle

Here’s the problem… Many black personalities like Cari Champion, Toure, etc. were brought up thinking they’re the victims in everything because of their color. Race has always been an issue with them. It is the reason why these people entered show business – it is a crusade to them. Toure even said earlier that his “job” is to seek racial justice, which explains why everything to him is racial, and you can’t debate with him logically. Even if Food TV had a cooking show, these people would scream racism if the chef preferred not to use black eyed peas. Just like when Jesus is on a born-again Christian’s mind every minute, racism is on Cari and Toure’s minds every minute. They can’t get rid of this problem – it is embedded in their DNA.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1477047210 Rod Heinemeyer

I agree Alan….Racism starts with looking in the mirror

    • BeautifulAmerica

He was hired for the express purpose of being an Affirmative Action communist and not a journalist. His “job” is to spread marxist, divisive propaganda.
He wouldn’t be on the air otherwise.

When I look at Gabby Douglas I see Gold; when ESPN looks at her they see black. Pathetic.

    • JimmyJusticeUSA

Its not ESPN’s fault Gabby has cried racism in the past. Its her fault for crying wolf not ESPN’s for asking about that wolf.

      • ohYESiDID

You are correct, JJUSA. She took Oprah’s bait during a post Olympic interview and tried to say how racist Virginia Beach was toward her growing up here. Her previous gymnastics club in VB called her out on this immediately. When Gabby was in town and a local VA Beach TV reporter questioned her on it, she suddenly had amnesia about racism.

http://www.businessinsider.com/gabby-douglas-racism-2012-8 According to this – Gabby brought up racism in an interview with Oprah!!!!! I don’t know but maybe ESPN knew of this interview and was asking because what she herself had said.

  • Guest

Something has to be said and done aout all these accusaions of raceism

    • JimmyJusticeUSA

Yes is does, which is why Gabby shouldnt have whined to Oprah about racism in the 1st place

Something has to be said and done aout all these accusaions of raceism

  • Seewetoldu

Something has got to be done about all the accusations of racism . I’m sick and tired of it . And main Stream media is constantly saturating the public with absolute lies, every single day. Now even ESPN is going there too?. People this SH## has got to stop..NOW! We need one of our representatives make a public service announcement on stopping this racism. Before they really do turn it into a black hating country.

    • JimmyJusticeUSA

Gabby cried racism, ESPN was just asking about it. She brought this on herself

    • Seewetoldu

Her African American former teammates will answer this serious accusation. (1st statement untruth, she was not the only African American gymnast training in the gym) We are good people. We never were knowingly involved in any type of bullying or racist treatment, like she is accusing Excalibur.”
So is she getting her racism from other African American . They might want to let the viewers know they are NOT white girls…as we all assumed

  • http://insolublog.blogspot.com/ insolublog

Wow. A human being want’s her accomplishments to define her, instead of her skin color. Please inform the progressive machine that a free mind is wandering away.

Don’t they understand that they’re the racist ones? It’s all they can think about!

Let’s not forget one of the original Sportscenter anchors was one Keith Olbermann…..

I know it wasn’t ESPN, but I have the 2012 National Basketball Championship game DVR’d and I’ve never seen the halftime show. I love UK Basketball, but I didn’t record it to watch baracksketball. Why does he have to be EVERYWHERE???

Gabby has more class than ESPN can begin to cope with. Of course, you only have to look at who owns and runs ESPN now to see why. It was bad enough for the liberal media that she gave thanks to her God for helping her through her endeavors (EEEK!) Now she refuses to to play the race card. What is this world coming to when someone stands up to the left’s backslide into the muck. I’m looking forward to seeing her in the next Olympics. Of course, the question remains if there is a sports channel left who is worthy to carry that event without politisizing every detail.

  • Kelly England McDonald

obama is certainly not the cause of everything wrong with our country today, he can take credit for a lot of it though, HE has definitely done everything within his evil power to divide this country racially . It is sad and pathetic!! The closest I have ever seen to the current racial climate was during and immediately following the mini-series Roots, in the 70’s.
