Former CEO of GE Jack Welch isn’t buying today’s new job data and appears to believe the Chicago machine is manipulating the numbers for political advantage after President Obama’s disastrous debate performance. And he’s not the only one doubting the BLS report.

Naturally Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis stands behind the credibility of the data.

https://twitter.com/HildaSolisDOL/status/254221603292987392

Laura Ingraham calls Solis’ numbers “total pro-Obama propaganda.”

And Rep. Allen West backed Welch up:

West wrote on Facebook:

I agree with former GE CEO Jack Welch, Chicago style politics is at work here. Somehow by manipulation of data we are all of a sudden below 8 percent unemployment, a month from the Presidential election. This is Orwellian to say the least and representative of Saul Alinsky tactics from the book “Rules for Radicals”- a must read for all who want to know how the left strategize . Trust the Obama administration? Sure, and the spontaneous reaction to a video caused the death of our Ambassador……and pigs fly.

Others are less inclined to think manipulation of the data is to blame or would like a little more detail from Welch.

But the Left never met a distraction it didn’t like. Forget spinning those jobs numbers. Squirrel! Let’s spend the day freaking out about Welch instead of getting Americans back to work.

Roland Martin is particularly beside himself:

Martin, of course, is well-known for level-headed analysis.

Update:

Rick Santelli weighs in on Jack Welch’s tweet:

“I would never send a tweet like jack welch and i respect jack. He’s a great guy,” Santelli said. “That’s why last month, I said that it would be below 8% right before the election. That’s why I said it. I don’t say things I can’t prove, that was my prediction. I will leave it at that.”

Here’s how Talking Points Memo editor Josh Marshall characterizes Santelli’s statement:

Update:

Welch is sticking to his guns:

And he’ll be discussing his economic assessment with Fox’s Neil Cavuto this afternoon:

I don’t know if these numbers are correct or not, and I’m not going to take a side on this issue but WE DO KNOW THAT THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION HAS BEEN CAUGHT IN SO MANY INCONSISTENCIES AND UNTRUTHS THAT THEY HAVE VIOLATED THE PUBLIC TRUST. Congress needs to grow a pair and take action with the powers they have.

There are 23 million people in this country who are disenfranchised with regard to employment. It’s time we stopped worshiping the U3 rate which is useless and pointless as a true indicator of the unemployment mess in this country and is nothing but political bling.

Obama and the Department of Labor are LYING.
    THIS IS MATH.

    New Jobs Added: 144,000
    Old Unemployment Rate: 8.1
    New Unemployment Rate: 7.8
    Change: .3

    .3 x 144,000 = 43,200 people per .1

This is means that every tenth of 1 percent of the workforce represents 43,200 people.

This is means that every 1 percent of the workforce represents 430,200 people.

This is means that every 10 percent of the workforce represents 4,300,200 people.

This is means that every 100 percent of the workforce represents 43,300,200 people.

The bad news? The Department of Labor says the total estimated number of people employed in the civilian workforce: 143,333,000

The only truth there is that the left is lying.

The DEMwits don’t understand Math. That’s why they’re SO stupid and believe everything NObama says. HOW many of their friends and family are STILL looking for work? But they believe all the BS the “Chicago Way” puts out. 114K ONLY adding of jobs doesn’t not make the #’s go down. We need OVER 500K/month to move at a 30yr high like they just claimed

Yet, most of G.E. is in bed with the administration, and these leftist dolts only pounce when their narrative is attacked. The people who continue to support Obama are a disgrace to this nation, period. There is too much to point out on what your character must be if you support MOST of Obama’s actions but let’s start with the murders of Americans in Libya and the lies to cover it up. Disgraceful. See how easily the spit at someone from G.E. when it doesn’t suit their narrative? And just like in ’08, they are emboldened as ever, despite the state of the economy, they are acting EXACTLY the same–as if their savior is about to be elected and that they are going to kick you in the teeth.

“The number of unemployed dropped 456,000 last month, while only 114,000 jobs got added. That either means that 342,000 people left the US, or they left the work force in one way or another. In the household survey, though, the number of people with jobs rose by 873,000 — a very strange outcome that makes it appear that more than one tweak has been done to previous data. ….
CNBC calls the numbers “tame,” but also notes the “contradictory” numbers:”

Yeah. Come here to my state or any of the states surrounding us and show me where employment is at a 30 year high. Is it behind the innumerable empty buildings and storefronts? Is it at any one of the thousands of businesses that can’t hire anyone and/or are laying people off? Perhaps it’s in the national chain grocery and department stores which are shuttering the windows and locking the doors because no one can afford to shop there anymore. Thank God we’re all back to work, I thought we’d all starve to death…

This isn’t so much a theory as it is a fact, something the left doesn’t know much about.

    • dzhugashvili

      Hey Red,
Even better, if you have a Trillion dollars in debt, and you pay it off at the rate or $1 Million per month, You have to pay for 83,333 YEARS!

Up it to a $1 Billion a month, and you pay for 83 years. Oh, wait, that’s at 0% interest. If you owe just 2% interest, your $1 Billion per month will NEVER pay off the Trillion because your Principal + Interest grows a rate faster then your payoff.

When O loser says he is only responsible for $6 Trillion of the $17 Trillion debt, he is still responsible for ladling, all by himself $68,000 of debt onto every taxpayer with more than $33K annual income (top 50%) of taxpayers. The top 50% are on the hook for 77% of all US debt.

The jobs number is bunkum in all the ways that have already been expressed. They are also too little, too late for Obama. For the general electorate–not just the blinders-wearing Democrats–to have a sense of optimism, the BLS should have started putting out bogus sub-8 unemployment #s in June and July to try to show a trend of “real” recovery in the job market. Most undecided voters will see this sudden 7.8 figure just a month before the election and go either “Hmm” or “How convenient!”

It only has to be borne in mind, “7.8%” of WHAT? Well, of the people who make up the labor force. Now, the labor force grows as population increases, that is, normal population growth and immigration. For the unemployment rate to remain static, roughly 110,000 jobs have to be added per month, so we would be about static at the 114,000 number. So how is it that the unemployment rate magically went down? Easy. Remember the unemployment rate reflects the number *seeking* jobs. Now take a look at this chart from the Bureau of Labor Statistics: http://data.bls.gov/timeseries/LNS11300000/
Oops. The reason ‘unemployment’ is down, is that people are no longer seeking employment. Hardly a reason to rejoice. The fact is, the 7.8% number is actually an indicator that things have gotten worse, not better.

  • RaggedyAnn46

2/3 of the decrease in unemployment was because people got PART TIME JOBS FOR ECONOMIC REASONS.

114,000 people got a job. But on average, 360,000 people per WEEK filed for 1st time UE benefits during the same period. So how in hell did the rate go down? oh yea, seasonal adjustment!! And bless their hearts, the BLS number doesn’t include people who haven’t found a job since exiting the Military, or high school and college grads who can’t find a job to begin with. Why aren’t Vets considered to be unemployed when they leave the military? Maybe someone should remind BLS of the slogan “It’s not just a job, it’s an Adventure!” And then there’s the millions who have gone on to social security disability because they got so dam depressed when there was no job to be found… The BLS should change their name to just BS.

Conservatives dismayed by the misleadingly bullish headline unemployment
number should focus less on the probability that the numbers were
cooked, which is quite low, and more on the probability of mean
reversion in the November number, which is high.

    And they should
really avoid associating their own credibility with that of Jack Welch,
who in his own memoir offered evidence that GE routinely engaged in
what in boardrooms is called “earnings management,” and out of
    boardrooms is called “fraud.”
