Remember when Katie Couric interviewed Sarah Palin, which led to the now infamous mockery of the Alaska governor that she could see Russia from her house?
Well, imagine if Palin had said something like, the Netherlands is so good at speed skating because the canals in Amsterdam freeze over and the Dutch ice skate on them to work and such?
Because that’s exactly what Couric said during NBC’s coverage of the Opening Ceremony:
According to @katiecouric, the Dutch skate all over Amsterdam. That’s how they transport Marijuana and schrooms and also how they travel across the Atlantic Ocean. https://t.co/pINMtrfxcC

Between this and Katie Couric’s “The Netherlands are great at speed skating because skating on the canal is the main mode of transportation in Amsterdam”, NBC needs to have some serious culture/history/geography lessons with its anchors https://t.co/dchXhG9pQk

Another hot Netherlands fact: Our version of Uber is a very strong speed skater pushing a chair you can sit on. I'll admit, no phone charging options but the fresh air is nice. https://t.co/jNLthzlJd7

Watch here:
You just can't make this up.
NBC opening ceremony coverage. Katie Couric talks about why The Netherlands is so good at speed skating as The Netherlands enters the stadium.
And this folks is why Americans are less bright about the rest of the world as they spread fake news! pic.twitter.com/7YC5deTl2w

And now for the fact check:
I remember hearing this, thinking "hm, when I was in Amsterdam in February the canals weren't frozen over" and then thinking "hm, Amsterdam is like a real coastal city, I bet it doesn't get cold enough to freeze that much." https://t.co/Mr5PYPk3i6

Memo to Katie Couric: The canals in Amsterdam freeze on average ONCE every 10-15 years. So yeah, skating is a major form of transportation. You can do better. I know you can. @katiecouric

Someone ask Katie if windmills were involved!
No visitor to Amsterdam can have missed the hordes of Dutchvolk speeding past, borne on modified clog-skates, and propelled by tactically placed windmills. https://t.co/lV60AprAZa

Or maybe it wasn’t her fault?
Fire your researcher NBC. Fire them immediately. https://t.co/sYRH5HovGv

But we still blame Couric. This is Ron Burgundy in “Anchorman” bad:
Some intern at NBC was given the task to writeup fun facts about each nation and made shit up. Also @katiecouric how did you read this and go, "yeah, this makes sense." https://t.co/UaIo1ceEiG

We want to know this, too:
can't wait to hear her explain why the Norwegians are so good at biathlon https://t.co/8Cj3ZEUZ0X
