Craig Ferguson has announced that he won’t be renewing his contract with CBS and will end his run as host of “The Late Late Show” in December.

Twitter users have been calling on CBS to name comedian and SNL alum Norm Macdonald as Ferguson’s replacement. The push started lightly a couple of days ago but really picked up steam last night:

Last night, #LateLateNormNorm was trending:

Overnight, Macdonald re-tweeted many of the calls for him to host “The Late Late Show,” both with and without the #LateLateNormNorm hashtag. Here’s just a small sampling:

As for a potential co-host for Macdonald, as well as his first guest if he should get the Late Late show gig, these people went back to a bit from Norm’s days on the SNL news desk:

Heh.

  • Ghee!

I’m in bed by 10. I am completely indifferent to this.

    GET OFF MY LAWN!!!

    • Humanary Stew

Same here and I don’t even have to get up for work in the morning. And still up by 6 most mornings.

  • MemorialDime

I’m not even up at 12:30, let alone watching TV at 12:30, let alone watching CBS at 12:30.

So maybe someone can tell me, is Norm Macdonald funny?

    • Elizabeth

Yes he is. Very, very dry sense of humor. You don’t remember him from SNL in the 80’s?

Edit to add: He wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea though, IMO.

      • MemorialDime

Can’t say I was alive in the 80’s.

        • Elizabeth

Sorry. I shouldn’t presume that everyone who posts here is over 30 years old! Check out clips of him on YouTube if you’re interested.

Though you’d be forgiven, to judge from a lot of us crotchety old curmudgeons. But hey, we need to tell these young whippersnappers that we’ve seen this same ol’ $#!t the last few times it’s been around, and that we MIGHT know something about stuff in general.

          • Elizabeth

I hate to age myself but I watched the very 1st episode of SNL And I even remember the ABC show Fridays which I believe was supposed to be their answer to the success of SNL.

          • http://twitter.com/thetugboatphil TugboatPhil

I believe that was “Kramer’s” first shot at national TV. I watched SNL the first year but didn’t pay it much attention. I was too busy being turned down by girls and getting sand kicked in my face.

          • Elizabeth

LOL Phil! I trust things have been a little bit more successful for you since those days. Most of my Saturday nights back then were spent at “discos”. Must have been a slow night for me to be home by 11:30 to see the first episode of SNL. BTW, I had no idea that’s where Michael Richards started. That show wasn’t very successful from what I remember. Damn lucky of him to be able to step into a show like Seinfeld all those years later.

      • http://twitter.com/thetugboatphil TugboatPhil

He was the best fake news anchor they ever had, IMHO. The 80s SNL doesn’t get much respect but I still think they had some great casts. Some of the bits were kind of lame, but when have they not had some. They at least had the nads to lampoon Democrats then.

        • Elizabeth

I actually did get to see it live in NY once in the Eddie Murphy/Joe Piscopo days. The skit I remember most from that night was Eddie Murphy doing “James Browns Hot Tub”. So funny!

      • DwellsInFire

Here’s Norm accurately predicting how awful a movie with Carrot Top will be. He gets in some good shots, especially the last one.

Having been weened on SNL when it began in the ’70’s, I can tell you that 80’s SNL was pretty lame. Today’s SNL, what I have seen of it, is worthless.

There are TV shows at 12:30am?

    • Ghee!

      who knew?

  • Linda

LOL, too funny, we can tell by comments so far, who of us are the “old farts.”

    • http://www.freedomreconnection.com/ FreedomRecon

Pffft! I’m not an “old fart”! LOL But I do work multiple jobs, soooo

      • Linda

OK, you get an exemption from my comment. I am an “old fart” and proud to have made it this far!!

        • http://www.freedomreconnection.com/ FreedomRecon

LOL, I should add, sooo..that makes me FEEL like an old fart!

          • Linda

            lol

          • http://twitter.com/thetugboatphil TugboatPhil

Don’t rush it. Actually being an old fart feels much worse. At least when you first get up in the morning. However, it beats the alternative.

          • http://www.freedomreconnection.com/ FreedomRecon

LOL, well I think 20 years of ballet may have sped up the process on the ol’ joints. But yes, it beats the alternative.

          • Humanary Stew

Will you at least take a shower so you don’t smell like one too?

      • MemorialDime

“I’m an ‘old fart.’ I sound like one, I feel like one, I even smell like one!”

    • Ghee!

If they gave him a talk show at 6 in the morning, now that’s a different story!

      • Linda

True..actually 4AM works best for me…I’d never need an alarm clock if I actually had to wake up that time.

  • therealguyfaux ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

As his old SNL castmate Dennis Miller might ask, would Norm be a departure from the norm, or would this be a regression to the mean?

  • tops116 ✓Quipper

If CBS was interested in having funny people in late night, then they wouldn’t have passed Craig Ferguson over for Stephen Colbert.

  • hatsylady

We want Norm. We want Norm!

  • Lou Bator

Norm might be good for that gig. He, like Craig Ferguson, is off the beaten path. If Norm takes over, maybe Craig will leave Geoff.
