The third rule is that both of those rules will be quickly broken, as Slate’s Dave Weigel and Matt Yglesias demonstrated within moments of reports of a shooting on Capitol Hill:

Weigel thought it was a good time for some snark:

Hilarious, except not really:

Yglesias thought the shooting was a good opportunity to discuss shutdown politics:

We’re sure that was the first thing on officers’ minds as the bullets were flying.

Not only is Yglesias’ comment not funny, but it’s also wrong:

Another futile reminder:

Too soon? Unfortunately for some, it’s never too soon. Markos Moulitsas of The Daily Kos helped Weigel and Yglesias demonstrate that:

The abhorrent douche is strong in this one.

Suspending politics for an hour or so during a story with potentially devastating consequences for people is so out of style.

This provides the best summary:

  • Chesnj

I think the only thing we know about the incident at this time is that whatever we know is wrong.

    • Jay Stevens

It is now 7 hours later, and you are correct.

  • CR

Redundant headline. You see the names Dave Weigel, Matt Yglesias and Markos Moulistas, you automatically just replace their names with “Douche” anyway (or maybe that’s just me).

I just call them The Three Douches. Of course, with the appropriate apologies to Larry, Curly, and Moe.

  • Brandt

Odd that Twitchy left Rep. Tim Griffin off this post. I must assume an update is forthcoming.

    • conservativechick

That was later and BTW? He was at least correct! Democrats and even President ramping up the rhetoric. We are ‘holding a gun to their heads?’ Come on!

  • BoscoBolt

Well, it sounds like the suspect was a woman, and may have been UNARMED (?) – she supposedly tried to ram the barricades out side of the White House, then fled – and was killed, in her car, by Capitol Police (or D.C. Police) – a small child was also removed from the car … story gets stranger and stranger …

    • dwsmokin

It does get stranger-it’s the second tragedy in DC involving an African American. The media is literally salivating at the prospect of a white survivalist Tea Partier going postal-and it’s really getting under their skin that it’s just not happening that way.

      • E Quilibrate

        And historically almost never does.

      • mikeinmn

Yeah, but the M-60 option package is REALLY cool!

        • Hcon1

Yes, it costs a lot, but worth every penny. And I hear they are offering a deal on the upgrade to the M2A1 version – sweet!

Personally neither would surprise me. But it certainly helped pave the way to the 2009 Ft. Hood massacre.

      • RogueRose

Actually the regulation was enacted by his predecessor, Bush #1… I blame all of them, both Clinton and George W could have lifted the ban, had 16 yrs to do it, and neither one did…

        • autdrew4real

        • mike_in_kosovo

          “lifted the ban”

That’s a distinction without a difference – the military doesn’t, outside of training time and combat tours, have personnel under arms on a day to day basis.

This goes back at *least* to WWII.

      • Crap Daddy

Yes, I know. That’s what makes it a joke. You see… Oh never mind

      • mike_in_kosovo

I’d love to find an *actual* mention of the law, EO, whatever it supposedly was….I’ve searched and can’t find it.

The closest thing to it was a reg about arming military personnel acting as LE on base…and that was revised under Bush Sr.

The military have never really carried arms on a day-to-day basis, outside of training or combat zones, at least back to WWII (according to my Dad, a WWII vet)…and most military positions are *NOT*, contrary to popular opinion, under arms.

    • ahb111

The Military bases are gun-free zones already how do you think Fort Hood and the DC Navel Base happened. Maybe at least the military should be allowed to defend themselves here since the Rules of Engagement in Afghanistan they almost need to morandise the terrorists before they can shoot them. If we don’t start standing up we are going to be made to lie down.

      • autdrew4real

I agree. I am a military wife of 22 yrs. These things affect me personally. I have friends & family in every branch, even in the State dept & Pentagon. It is infuriating to me that they are required to basically sacrifice themselves for the terrorists over there because of the r.o.e’ s. I’ve been having hissy fits for a few yrs but,of course, I’m nobody so nobody listens. Now the world knows how exposed we are.

But the original comment was sarcasm

        • Crap Daddy

Yes, from my ex cop, vet point of view, it is absolutely ludicrous for our military bases not to be armed strongholds. Guess I’ll have to label my jokes from now on.
Kind of takes the edge off it though.

          • autdrew4real

From my current status as active duty spouse & resident of many military bases, I wholeheartedly agree:-)

      • Mead

        Yeah, pretty much

Never mind that essential personnel like police (and food processing inspectors, interestingly) are in no way left without pay. If one gets told to report to work, one gets paid as normal.

Another thing Yglesias got wrong: police were NOT “responding to a shooting incident”. The shooting occurred at the end of the car chase, NOT before it.

    • keyboard jockey

According to Jake Tapper The Lead only gun fire came from the police they may have shot and killed an unarmed black woman.

    • TitusPullo

They always parroted the left-wing party line. It was just never this obvious.

  • Lee Reynolds

The left seems to be operating off the following principle: Never let a tragedy unfold without using it to slander ones opponents and score cheap rhetorical points that only other leftists find compelling.

What they fail to understand is that every time they do this, they lose credibility. The only people who listen to partisan hacks are other partisan hacks. Kool-aide drinking true believers might mop this stuff up, but undecideds, who are really the only people who can be persuaded, are usually quite disgusted by it and form a negative opinion of anyone who does it.

These guys are scoring points…. against themselves. Their personal brand equity is squandered and they eventually join Dan Rather among ranks of people the public does not trust anymore.

Maybe I shouldn’t even bother to post this, since someone on the left might listen…..naaahh, that would require them to be capable of introspection.

Hello @TGGP:disqus I hope all is well for you and your family! I tracked you here to say hello. Matty’s comment seems the most neutral of the lot, although he was unfortunately wrong. I put myself in an antagonized frame of mind, to understand better; I don’t like Matty, mea culpa.

Maybe he meant that the police were being heroic and dedicated, at their posts though unpaid, bravely defending an ungrateful Democrat administration who would disarm them? Or, this is awful, the police were off-duty and shot the young woman as sport? Or Matty might have been noting what he thought was correct, without blaming either party, nor both. Not that I like him either, but Rand Paul was the only one who should have been on Twitter, as he was in situ, and provided meaningful information. Everyone else should have been quiet and listened, not generating noise.

      • TGGP

It’s just an observation, which would have been interesting if true. The idea that they shot the woman as “sport” seem ridiculous, no one thinks they were “off duty” even if unpaid (people who work unpaid overtime are not “off duty” either).
