Some people on the far left side of the aisle will never admit that their blueprints for liberal/socialist utopias are colossal failures. It’s far easier to blame those who have so far managed to avoid becoming casualties of left-wing social experiments.

Former Clinton labor secretary and current professor at U.C. Berkeley, Robert Reich, is one of the people who believes the plan is flawlessly designed, but the problem is that the country isn’t implementing it according to how he worked it through on the chalkboard.

Not everybody is buying it though:

https://twitter.com/oJMo/status/358258848357826561

Here’s one possible future, but probably not:

If the people of means, such as Robert Reich (we’re guessing Reich does not live in east Oakland and is therefore part of the problem, according to his logic), have already “left the poor behind,” and the poor can’t afford to leave, what would the wall be for? Raquetball?

However, if the purpose of the walls would be to keep out leftist social engineers, that might be the idea of the century and the single best way to start rebuilding America’s cities.

The wealthy left because they feared for their lives.

    • pjsolarz

The “wealthy” left because they worked and saved and voted with their feet. It is the last freedom available to them in the city.

      • thomas moore

Pretty soon they’ll try taking that away too. As this happens more and more, you’ll start seeing fees and taxes and fines on companies and the wealthy when they leave a slowly decaying place, let’s say California, for some place better, like Texas. You’ll hear howls of how un-American it is. But they need to wake up, because eventually the best and brightest and the ambitious will leave.

        • Bob Cannell

No, from what I read Texas sucks. No one but idiots would want to live there. What about low taxes, warm weather, low intrusion government would someone want? Well maybe if you believe stopping abortions at 7-9 months is a violation of a womans rights…

    • Chaz_Martel

Hah! I get a kick out of people who complain of Democratic policies and liberal stupidity but then they elect as President an inexperienced, untested, far Left demagogue;; then, after four years of gross incompetency and economic failure they add insult to injury and re-elect him. Or, if they personally did not vote for him then they failed to get behind the best President we never had, Mitt Romney, and thus we end up getting the charlatan Obama for another four sordid and sorry years. Even more than the idiotic, food stamp collecting, entitlement obsessed, Democrat supporters, I blame the apathetic, hostile conservatives for the re-election of Obama. They have got the pathetic President that they so richly deserve.

      • BayushiZero

        Screw you, Chaz!

How did we not get behind Romney? I didn’t much like Romney at first, but grew to like him as a fellow man.

If anyone is to blame on our side, it’s those who are so busy trying to lay blame on everyone but themselves, ie: YOU.

        • Kelly Layne

          • russellbennett

If they did vote and the machines changed the vote from Romney to Obama it would appear as though Republicans did not vote. In Ohio Obama won by about 1% and Now we find out that 20% of the voters were fake. He stole that one.

        • itchy

Chaz is right. Romney lost because his own people stayed home. They acquiesced defeat while victory was within their grasp. Those who stayed home along with those who are so grossly uninformed share the blame for the empty suit we now have as president

Why screw me BayushiZero when you conservatives have been so busy screwing yourselves out of your apathy and hostility to anybody you regard as anything less than a ‘perfect conservative.’?

The numbers do not lie. If enough conservatives had stopped whining for awhile and went out and worked hard for Romney’s ground game, Romney would have been President right now and So many things which are turning to excrement under Obama would be getting better under Romney by now including a significant drop in unemployment numbers and more importantly the immediate repealing of Obamacare.

Oh well, you snooze, you lose.

        • C R Ellsworth

Romney lost due to election fraud in 4 States, Florida, Virginia, Colorado and Ohio. 400,000 votes in those 4 States swung the Electoral College. After Practice, practice since at least 2000, Progressives could fake 400,000 votes without breaking a sweat.

      • William Blanshan

You can’t call Mitt Romney the best President we ever had when he was never President. He might have been, though, if he’d gotten elected. Ronald Reagan still has my vote for the best President we’ve ever had. Those are some pretty big shoes to fill, but maybe Romney could have done it.

        • Don Erickson

I’m amused by people whose views are so far right that they see President Obama just left of center, and THINK *that* is the ‘far left’. You have no IDEA how far left of Obama ‘the left’ goes!

      • http://honor1778.com/ Marcus Porcius

The people you’d be blaming, if you weren’t so stupid and “moderate,” are your fellow idiots at the RNC who made sure Romney was the “inevitable” candidate instead of somebody good. Had we had someone like Herman Cain that actual conservatives (you know, that whole “base” thing) could stomach this would never have happened. Ditto McLame.

It’s the RINO jerks like you who put Obama in the White House twice, not the “apathetic, hostile conservatives” who used to run the party but are now treated as more the enemy than Obama is.

YOU got us the pathetic we so vehemently fought against.

        • Chaz_Martel

The trouble with your faulty reasoning Marcus Porkus, is that you rejected Romney because you decided that he was not conservative enough for you and so you end up with four more years of the far Left ideologue and traitor Obama. Are you really stupid enough to believe that was a smart and justifiable decision? Romney would have been a vast improvement over Obama.

After for more years of the gross incompetent Obama in power you may not even have a country left that is worth saving.

          • http://honor1778.com/ Marcus Porcius

There’s only one problem for you there, idiot. I live in Southern California AND I held my nose and voted for Romney. Obama crushed Romney here, so my vote didn’t matter and wouldn’t have even if I hadn’t voted for him.

It doesn’t change the fact that YOUR ilk gave us John McLame Jr. as a candidate.

Morons like you gave us McClame. Loss. Then you gave us Romneycare the 1st. Loss. What’s your next great “if you don’t vote for this guy we can’t win” suggestion?

So you are factually wrong and intellectually vacuous…exactly what to expect from a RINO.

PROUD MICHIGANDER. FAMILY HAS LIVED IN MICHIGAN GOING ON 6 Generations, starting with my Great Great Grandparents.

I lived in Detroit I had NO choice – My ex husband was a School Board Worker. he was a Journeyman Roofer. Coleman Young after his Busing fiasco when all got up and left, stated all Workers who work for the city MUST STAY !!! 90 Mils on my house in Taxes in the 80’s. 90 Mils, by the time I left over 100 Mils. I was paying 2,000 dollars a year in summer taxes and over 1,000 dollars a year in winter. On a house that was worth only 40 grand in the city, but outside the City it would have been worth over 100. I LEFT BECAUSE THEY TAXED ME TO DEATH.

I was a Wedding Photographer in Detroit. I couldn’t sustain it because of the TAXES. THE TAXES, in the 80’s under YOUNG and what he did, WAS UNREAL. Oh and You work in the City, He considered it a great opportunity. So he TAXED YOU FOR WORKING THERE. CITY INCOME TAXES. No one every got a Refund, didn’t matter how much YOU PAID, they always made it to where at the End of the YEAR YOU OWED DETROIT MORE. I KNOW I PAID !!!

when Young was elected, he decided one day to do busing. Because he didn’t like segregation in the Schools. So lets bring all the Kids from the West Side to the East side and Vice Versus. Well Um you do not send a kid an hour from their home when they are In ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. The City Segregated itself after the Riots. WHITE FLIGHT HAPPENED UNDER YOUNG. GREAT WHITE FLIGHT.

Yes 1967 Riots Where Cavanaugh would do nothing – a WHITE LIBERAL – Who appointed the Police Chief. Started the Process. HE signed onto Johnson’s Model Cities program. He sat on Johnson’s Task Force for this. It was Centralized Urban Planning.

And Detroit received widespread acclaim for its leadership in the program, which attempted to turn a nine-square-mile section of the city (with 134,000 inhabitants) into a “model city.” More than $400 million was spent trying to turn inner cities into shining new monuments to government planning. In short, the feds and Democratic city mayors were soon telling people where to live, what to build, and what businesses to open or close. In return, the people received cash, training, education, and health care.

The Model Cities program was a disaster for Detroit. But it did accomplish its real goal: The creation of a state-supported, Democratic political power base. The program also resulted in much higher taxes – which were easy to pitch to poor voters who didn’t have to pay them. Cavanagh pushed a new income tax through the state legislature and a “commuter tax” on city workers. People started to flee.

The Taxes got so high, so out of control. I was so glad that we finally were able to leave.

My family is buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery – most Polish are. Most families who settled there Were. We can’t go to my Grandparents grave.

My family every year Polish Festival, Went to Hudsons for the Window displays at Christmas, Went to the Thanksgiving Day Parade, Went to the Cobo Hall Winter Festival, Can’t do those things anymore. Cobo Hall Winter Fest, and Hudsons is gone. I would still go to the Parade, but it is not the SAME anymore.

I remember going Downtown all the time To Fort Wayne, Destroyed and gone. To the Science Center, to the Art Institute. Don’t do that anymore. Couldn’t even Take my kids to those places.

Under Young he was so corrupt, and the corny Capitalism that took place, he didn’t care about nothing but his friends. BILLIONS UPON BILLIONS WERE STOLEN FROM THAT CITY.

I watched Neighborhoods BURN from the DEVIL NIGHTS FIRES. MY NEIGHBORHOOD WENT UP IN FLAMES. WE WOULD LET THE HOUSES BURN AFTER THE 5th or 6th TIME THEY WERE SET A BLAZE.

I FOUGHT YOUNG. I STOOD TOE TO TOE WITH THAT MAN at a MERE 20 Years old. NO ONE CARED. That was when my mom said Stop, it is going to cause you to be Killed. I didn’t quit. I went after that man and as a conservative Mary Ann Mahaffey, a White city Council Member who was Liberal, Taught me How to talk at council Meetings. even though she knew I was So very Conservative.

I am tired of hearing that Detroit is the Whole State, it is not. Because of Detroit and all the liberals – the one thing that people should be saying is you left Detroit because of Problems, taxes, jobs, then you come NORTH and want those same policies !! They (liberals) have Destroyed CenterLine, Warren, Hamtramck, and now they are pushing further north to Sterling Heights, Clinton Township, then the West Side with kalamazoo, and the rest.

I am so sick and tired of this garbage. White, Black left the City. What is it flooded with now ILLEGALS. Hispanics and MUSLIMS.

Think about the beautiful Old Catholic Churches – from the 1800’s being turned into Mosques or being left to rot. My state has great history, but my gosh the people are so stupid at times.

  • MarcusFenix

I find it odd that a political economist can’t articulate the actual problem with Detroit. I’m sure that over 18 Billion dollars in debt has a source, right?

    Weeelllllll, about that……

Link below to the stats I’m using.

According to WaPo, the $18 Billion is spread across base government debt, water/sewer expenses (but doesn’t say what those are, specifically, i.e. equipment, personnel, etc), and then unfunded retiree healthcare and pensions.

The retiree healthcare and unfunded pensions, according to the charts, clock in at just over $9 billion, or roughly 50% of the debt that the city has in total.

According to the article as well, it writes checks to roughly 21,000 people per month.

I don’t have to be a professor at Berkley to know that if you’re in debt at $18 Billion, and $9 billion is your unfunded retirement debt………well, then the problem gets a little clearer.

What makes me a little fuzzy on this is the division. (If my math or concept is incorrect, a correction wouldn’t go amiss!!!)

9 billion, divided by 21,000 people comes out to: 428,571 and some decimal points.

If you break it down, the unfunded pensions average out to $166,000, with another 271k each for the healthcare.

I don’t think that is the lifetime cost they assessed, based on the chart…looks like an ongoing, rolling number. That could be where my thinking is off, but…

Granting the distinction between what Detroit owes, and what they are actually paying on their pension is one thing, and if they are in default then people are not getting what they were promised or contracted to receive. So far, according to a few places, it’s not missing those payments…..yet.

But, with those numbers, it’s not surprising that Detroit is defaulting on things, when half their budget is going towards programs they couldn’t afford to begin with, especially given that these numbers do not include the fire and police pension setup.

Secondarily, having 39% paying into a system that 61% draw from is never a good thing, unless you’re a liberal. 😉

Again, if my facts/math are off, I wouldn’t mind a correction. Lot going on right now, didn’t have as much time to fact check as I’d have liked.

    Cluephone for Mister Reicccch:

Wealthy people always have options other than sticking around and being robbed blind. If you are so big on the rich helping the poor, you have to make them *want* to help, keep your redistribution unobtrusive enough to prevent flight, or kill them and forcibly take their wealth.

Redistribution can never remain unobtrusive, as every want becomes a need, dependent constituencies keep negotiating higher and higher prices for continued political support, and enforcement/distributive bureaucracies inevitably grow and metastasize. Killing the wealthy kills the golden goose. Wealthy people in a mostly meritocratic system got that way through the superior ability to provide goods and services for others. Kill them, and you kill that expertise. Best to make them want to stay.

  • AZWarrior

No Robert, Detroit failed because it’s citizens elected the uneducated and irresponsible people who opened the city’s bank account and credit card to the Democrat controlled Unions. Let the city die. They deserve to be bulldozed for a parking lot and all unions are responsible.

Definition of “rich” – being able to afford to move.

  • Christopher Fasano

Detroit is the result of community organizing.

  • Terry Clapp

The rich left because of 50 plus years of democrats heaping more on the pile with no logical acknowledgement that it would eventually lead to problems. Even if Detroit had kept its 2 million population it would still be having problems from its unfunded liabilities. The 1.3 or so million who left cut their losses and went where they could find jobs!!!

  • Scott Bauer

Look at Indianapolis. A model for urban renewal the right way. Business took the city back. The rich didn’t flee- they moved back in. People who make money moved in and the looters had to move out. By looters, I mean the people who for one reason or another choose not to be productive and legislate themselves for themselves OPM (other people’s money).

  • William C Hodgson

Lots of empty houses ready for Mr Reich and his ilk to move in and “save” the city.

  • CrispusA

Why doesn’t Bob get all of his rich friends and move to Detroit? I love how they suggest what everyone else should do while they stay in their richie-rich lefty enclaves. What a freaking blowhard.

  • Tarantula2

He must have deleted that tweet. Dying to comment on it but can’t find it.

  • dwstick

My guess is that you’re pretty well off, financially, Reich. Why don’t YOU move to Detroit? And take some of your elitist, limousine-liberal, rich friends with you! Set the example!

  • Dutra

Since when did Reich become a comedian?

  • Dallas Duncan Sr

How many white school teachers were beat up in Detroit trying to educate them
    fools!

  • Douglas Barker

Margaret Thatcher once said that ‘The trouble with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money’?

  • Robert Luis Rivera

Look in the mirror Robert Reich you are not anywhere near as smart as you think you are. The FACT is liberalism doesn’t work!! #realitycheck

I think we could set a great example by bulldozing 60% of Detroit, building parks and erecting a memorial to LBJ and the “Great Society”. RIP
The middle and upper classes were chased out of Detroit with constant violence and the biggest race riot in US history, RR is a creepy little guy and a liar.

Robert Reich needs to step up and buy and move into a place in Detroit. I’m sure he’ll feel safe living there.

People always respond to economic incentives. The rich can be more
responsive because they have more money and more options. That’s a
given. Even limo-libs like Gore and Kerry (to name 2 among thousands)
    respond the same way.

An economist of any note would recognize
that and suggest that government not do things that provide incentives
for the people who fund a city government to choose to another city’s
    government to fund.

You can put lipstick on a pig, it’s still a pig. You can call it “social engineering”, it’s still a liberal agenda!! And guess what? It didn’t turn out so good, did it?

  • Rudemeister

Those that were on the dole stayed because they wanted the handout. Those that were outside the government teat saw the writing on the wall and left. The American automobile industry WAS our pride before the world how capitalism was superior. Here is the result of the purveyors of parasitism.

  • Oilfart1

it is not he wealthy leaving that caused the problem. it is the working class, that could no longer find employment, leaving to greener pastures to find jobs that has caused the problem. Why did the jobs leave? UAW contracts that led to automobiles being to expensive to build when compared to plants in right to work states like South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.

Then, there are those union contracts negotiated with the City of Detroit created a lack of funds to deliver city services due to payments to retiree pensions, retiree medical and represented employee benefit packages. Personnel were cut, further limiting the ability of the City to keep the citizens safe, maintain the streets, and deliver utilities.

When a city does not deliver the services required, those who can leave. The only ones left, for the most part, are the non-working leaches on tax paying citizens.

  • moose2271

Mr. Reich, you need to study the situation a lot more before making yourself look so detached from the reality that has been Detroit for the past 50 years.

  • JeffreyFuller

Why can’t these people rebuild their economy by educating themselves on how to do or create something. Where there are people, there are needs. Where there are needs, there are opportunities, and as long as there are those willing to seize opportunity, there is an economy.

    • autdrew4real

Not in Detroit. Our city govt will kill the entrepreneur with taxes, regulations, racism if they are not black, to include the many immigrant groups there. You have to be extremely stubborn & tough to deal with the city govt, and have a stash for graft 😉

      • JeffreyFuller

You got a point. May Atlas Shrug, and shrug hard. THEN incorporate my idea.

  • ModdKenwood

being liberal means never having to take accountability for your F-ups.
it’s always the fault of somebody else.

  • kbielefe

I’m confused. I thought income inequality is bad, but now Detroit is failing because it doesn’t have enough rich people?

    • autdrew4real

No tax base. Detroit has a high city tax plus there are county, state & federal taxes. Detroit has had corrupt politicians for 50 yrs & some VERY entrenched unions. The openly racist city govt drove business out, unions helped drive the industry out & when the jobs left, the people followed. Since there was less tax revenue, there was less money to line their poc…provide city services which led to more crime & more people leaving from the crime which led to fewer tax payers to fleece er..pay for services. Since there were fewer property owners, there were fewer people to pay for schools. Since most parents who care want their kids to go to a safe, decent school, those who could, left. Hope this helped!

  • qualguy

And ladies and gentleman this man Robert Reich was the labor secretary, and is teaching the same crap for the future generation in some liberal academia…
    what a PUTZ!!!!

What’s sad is his silly statement got 150 retweets. Probably brown-nosing students…lol.

  • Bob Jernigan

Please, an import tax on foreign cars and electronics would recreate a middle class. If you can make it for less than you can buy an import with proper inport tax you can rebuild industry and middle class America.

    • Stephen Speck

How about instead of punishing people who want to do business here (either with taxes if they set up shop here, or import duties if they want to trade with us), how about lowering corporate taxes here so people won’t HAVE to build their physical plant someplace else.

      • Bob Jernigan

Stephen, a little here and a little there. It all helps. You do not build middle class without a medium for middle class to thrive. Middle class is blue collar work. Working with your hands, building cars, appliances etc. Obama is on a pipe dream. He talks about rebuilding middle class without a mode to do it.

    • World B. Free

I guess you’re unfamiliar with Smoot-Hawley. Google it sometime.

  • Ken Rizza

    The Unions killed that city

  • russellbennett

When LBJ started the war on poverty it was not intended to help as much as it was intended to make them Democrats. It worked as LBJ wanted it to. Democrats have been in control ever since.

  • Guest

Liberals may be to blame. Liberalism itself? Maybe. Substantiate it, though.

  • Danceswithdachshunds

When you’re a shill for thieves you’re either stupid or getting a cut or … you are a commie like Robert Reich, (and ALL commies are liars).

It’s plain and simple, My parents were part of the flight form Detroit in 75, they actually stayed too long. By the time my father decided to leave, there was no more’selling” the house to get out. City officials came by the house to advise my father to sell(give) the house to HUD because it was too dangerous to stay. Heroin had come to Detroit post 67 riots, ( the movie “American Gangster”rightly depicts what happened to black neighborhoods in America in the late 60’s early 70’s). post Vietnam war. a waged drug war on the poor. So my father gave the house and moved to a far western suburb. Like many people, they were not financially prepared to upheave their families. This flight created a huge tax sinkhole. The American Auto Industry with it’s poor management, Ego and lack of vision destroyed itself. Chrysler, GM, Ford and the huge failure AMC, PUT OUT SHITTY PRODUCTS!!! And the Unions didn’t help either! They tried to hang on to an ideology that didn’t exist anymore, livable wages. There was sooo much waste all around! So when the Japanese figured it out,(Honda), the gig was up. The (world)consumer no longer relied on Detroit for the car. So starting in the mid 70’s you have a mostly poor and undereducated populace voting in corrupt politicians over and over again, insane! They were trying to spruce up downtown Detroit to bring the white folks in from the burbs. They come in for Baseball, Football, Hockey and a few concerts then leave for the most part. Even the Casinos didn’t help much. So instead of spending money on programs to rebuild the plighted neighborhoods, they ran up huge debt mismanaging the city with tax dollars spent on stupid shit like the people mover; Mayor Coleman Young started all that crap. . With much of the city’s manufacturing gone, and the industries that supplied the the manufacturing gone, so goes the jobs. That was a huge loss in tax revenue!! It’s like a perfect storm of lack of vision on all parts; The corporate side, the city Gov side and the citizens. Now the Koch Brothers are buying up land and turning it into dumping grounds. It’ll become a corporate city, with privatized police and prisons.

  • Josh G

Detroit is just living proof thay Unions unchecked do not work. Detroit only made it as long as it had because post WWII America was the only industrialized nation not in complete ruin. As soon as her competitors in that cflegration adopted American business practices (due in no small part to American post war influence) the game was begun. China, sitting patiently by the side, waited and kept her people under the communist thumb until Japan and Europe played their hands out. Now, adopting capitalist principles which guarantee financial success, combined witth totalitarian rule which keeps labor costs low…well, tou get the picture. Unions wth their demands for inflated pay, benefit lists and pensions burdens killed Detriot just as surely as the liberal “free for all” nanny state promises to destroy the entire nation now that takers outvote the earners.

  • btcomp

Robert, and it isn’t just income, but whose income? Detroit in 1940 was 2 1/2 million people of which 90% were white. In 2010 it was 750,000 people of which 90% are black. Now where did all the white people go? Hint: They didn’t move far away! And therein lies the problem, those that can do leave, those that can’t do stay!
