Viewers of the Democratic National Convention were impressed Thursday night with a powerful speech by retired Marine Corps General John Allen, who joined the crowd in a chant of “USA! USA!”

The most powerful speech I've seen this election season was just given by 4 star Marine Corps General John Allen. Wow. #USA #DemsInPhilly

Retired USMC General John Allen a powerful surrogate for @HillaryClinton. I expect to see him with her weekly.

John Allen is a highly intelligent, highly respected Marine general. Utterly apolitical. That he's here speaks volumes.

If you told me 3 years ago I'd see a pissed-off John Allen on the DNC stage, I'd have demanded you immediately pass me the blunt.

It was fortunate that there wasn’t a repeat of the embarrassing “No more war” chant that threatened to drown out former CIA Director Leon Panetta the previous night. Actually, there was, but the crowd by this point in the convention had been assured that it’s OK to chant “USA!” to drown out the anti-war crowd.

Just follow your hearts, and if that fails, stick to the script.
Gen. John Allen takes the stage with veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. As he speaks, the crowd cheers "USA! USA!"

Not exactly. The USA was to cover the "No More War" https://t.co/QYPfLo6ZSn

They were trying to drown out the chants of "No more war!"

After a rough opening day filled with hecklers, weren’t the Democrats in the hall declared unified on Day 2?
Embarrassing visual at DNC: Gen. Allen interrupted by "No more war” chants
— Zeke Miller (@ZekeJMiller) July 29, 2016
amazing to me that after that moment – "you have sacrificed nothing" – chants of "no more war" had to be drowned out by "U.S.A."

Tonight's obligatory military pride segment met with competing chants of USA! USA! and No More War! No More War!
— Michael Tracey (@mtracey) July 29, 2016
Kinda remarkable to see a hoarse 4-star shouting American exceptionalism at a Democratic crowd drowning out "no more war" chants with "USA!"
— Matt Welch (@MattWelch) July 29, 2016
Shouts of “No more war!” drowned out by a flag-waving, sign-holding crowd chanting, “USA!"
— Yoni Appelbaum (@YAppelbaum) July 29, 2016
The disruptions of the protestors appear to be backfiring, providing a backdrop of flag-waving patriotism to Gen. Allen’s speech.
— Yoni Appelbaum (@YAppelbaum) July 29, 2016
Who expected that at the DNC? So many conflicting emotions to process.
When you hear #DemsInPhilly chanting "USA" they're only doing it to cover another group of liberals chanting something anti-American.
