Most of us hadn’t heard of such a thing as a polar vortex before this week, and it didn’t make anyone smarter when CNN told us that the United States of America had been sucked into one. NBC’s Al Roker decided to drag out the 1959 edition of the American Meteorology Society Glossary of Meteorology to set everyone straight.

If the polar vertex has been around that long, maybe it’s a bit premature to link this one to global warming.

  • LegalizeShemp

I thought Polar Vortex referred to what was going on inside Al Roker’s underwear when he was at the White House. Oh wait, sorry, that was a Black Hole.

    • conservachick

hahahhaha i was trying to come up with some witty way of working “i pooped my pants” into this but, yours is much wittier .

    • BoscoBolt

The term “Black Hole” is RACIST!

      Sick remark. Come on.

  • Perry

The media creation is blaming “global warming”. for it’s behavior. Global Warming is only responsible for you sharting your pants.

  • H50 ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

OK Al, now explain what the heck a Polar Vortex has to do with Global Warming like most of your fellows have been claiming.

  • Richard J Sunkle

Joe Bastardi uses the term but questions why the media suddenly thinks they can use it to pimp their climate change fantasy.

    • Derfallbright

I have often wondered what the financial base is for the Weather channel to start with. It cost a bunch of money to keep a cable channel on the air 24/7. Of course they need to name storms that were never named before or turn ‘polar vortex’ into a drama. They need to grab more viewers. What are the ratings for the weather channel anyway?

  • therealguyfaux ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Al, it’s not that people thought the Media made up the actual term, a la, e.g., “Sharknado” or something (see below for description of your tactic).

It’s that all of a sudden, what is actually a fairly common phenomenon has been given an “ominous” (*”whoo-WHOO-whoo!”*) name.

And please clarify who you’re talking about, when you say “doubters,” Al. Wouldn’t want people to think you were referring to those horrible “Climate Change Deniers,” now, would we?

  • Perry

The following unusual conditions are caused by global warming:
    Below average temperatures.
    Above average temperatures.
Average temperatures. We need a huge carbon tax to correct this. PAY UP!

    • NRPax

I’ve taken to using the phrase “Tax until paradise” to describe their mindset.

  • Doc Farmer ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

@alroker If I remember rightly, TIME mentioned a Polar Vortex as proof of the “coming” ice age. The media USE it to their advantage, sir…

  • JimLockman

Al Roker is a douche bag. We know that term has been around, AL. We “doubters” are skeptical of the hype and tone the media are taking with it, trying to tie it to the fraud of Global Warming.

Nice try on the misdirect, AL, you hack.

    • Perry

Funny how the media just started pushing it when people were frozen silly. They know they’re looking like idiots and trying to cover lies with more lies.

      • Mark81150 Never/Trump/Hillary

They go every summer telling us every extra warm day PROVES WITH COMPLETE CERTAINTY that man made global warming is real…

Then we have record cold winters, and lest the average Joe see the hole a mile wide in their theory, have to explain no no no no.. EXTRA COLD also proves we’re making the planet warmer.. because…. . um.. because, it just does dammit, now shut up.

        • therealguyfaux ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Some idiot on Sean Hannity’s show said that it’s due to warmer water at the North Pole that’s escaping into the atmosphere and rising, thus forcing the cold air that would ordinarily circulate far north of the Lower 48, far south into it, and that this is a direct effect of — hold onto your hats, ladies and gents– “global warming”!

          • 0bamasnought

            It’s my fault.

The number of monkeys that have flown out of my nether regions hath doth upset Mother Gaia’s delicate balance.

Canned chili does that to me.

          • supplyguy

Yeah, didn’t see that one coming, huh?

    • karmafordems

I thought he was a “shart” bag

  • HARP2

Didn’t Roker vortex himself in the polar region at the White House ?

    • Joshua Embrey

In his defense, he thought he was melting.

  • Deborah Barton-Schulz

Please There is NO proof this has a thing to do with Global Warming! Al has just gone along for the ride. He is way wealthy why would he care? The Main Stream flows……on

  • tarandfeatherthecrooks

heh, and I thought polar vortex was the term for Al Gore hovering over the toilet seat.

  • Wendy Neal

The left with more lies my God you can’t shut them up. But some day they will and I’m afraid they will take the rest of the country with them.

  • brewerandpatriot

Mr. Roker will soon be asked to leave the MSM since he referenced a book that wasn’t on Oprah’s list.

  • NoMoreGore

The Media didn’t create the TERM Polar Vortex. They just misappropriated it to say the US had been sucked into one.

  • stuckinIL4now

The term may have been around for over half a century but the slimestream mediots still over-sensationalized it AS IF they discovered something new and special and heretofore unheard of that no one ever experienced before. And I’ll say again that I can recall multiple instances of this kind of weather in multiple years of every decade going back to the 1960s. Egads, how did we all survive it before it had a name?!!

    • karmafordems

It snowed once when I was 4. 50 years later it snowed again. Sounds like cooling to me

  • lainer51

This, coming from a man who pooped his pants and told the world about it….. #Genius

    • Mark81150 Never/Trump/Hillary

While in the White House… that would to any other being, be something you do not share like it was an accomplishment.. or at all..

His intelligence level is even lower than we thought, a dimwit of historic proportions.

  • ceemack

Bad as it is, a polar vortex is a lot easier to deal with than a bipolar vortex.

    • karmafordems

      Who is Algore?

  • Frustrated Teacher

Ok, Al….so the term isn’t new but also, the concept isn’t new and also is NOT applicable in the way the sensationalizing media are using it! Keep calm and turn your heater up!

  • Marvin Nelson

Good on ya’, Al! At least there are some real meteorologists left in the MSM.

To be fair, the only Polar Vortex I knew was that hexagonal storm on Saturn’s North Pole. Then again, I know far more about the atmospheric conditions on other planets more than Earth’s.

  • RK59

He is an idiot. Last year he and Today Show showed a story of a town that had the streets named after polar bears, and due to “Climate Change” and no sea ice, there were many more polar bears. Which was all bunk. Want to be the man Al/? Show that same town you used as climate change example now. You won’t. Idiot.

  • blockthiscnn

So in other words, above the frozen artic, where it’s cold, there’s a lot of cold air moving around. In winter time, when it gets cold, some of this cold air got lower than the arctic.

Well knock me over with a feather.

  • Barack Hussein Sharpton

Time Magazine Goes Both Ways On The Polar Vortex

Posted on January 7, 2014by stevengoddard

In 1974, Time Magazine blamed the cold polar vortex on global cooling.

If the polar vertex has been around that long, maybe it’s a bit premature to link this one to global warming.

So this polar vortex thing happened before, I guess once again we have proof that global warming is nonsense.

  • Chad G. Singer

Nobody thought the media created the polar vortex. They’re just wrong about it being in any way involved. In fact, you could go so far as to say that any time anything science related appears on any news show, it is wrong, or at least mostly wrong.

Al Roker, didn’t he poop his pants at the whitehouse? That is what he will be remembered for.

  • James Perley

i am a volunteer weather observer and storm spotter. Al is right, the term has been with us for years and the Weather Service uses it every winter. Another term is Greenland block. It also influences our weather at times. The hyper news media and warmists are block heads to blame this cold spell on global warming.

    • Al_the_Fish

And in Canada, a cold freeze affecting the centre of the country is often attributed as being due to an “Omega block.”

  • BoscoBolt

Okay, so, if the ‘polar vortex’ has been understood and recognized since at least 1959, then how can it be a result of ‘global warming’ as Roker and brainless obamaturdlings claim, considering that Al Gore didn’t even invent ‘global warming’ until the 1990’s?

    • jon west

Roker never linked it to global warming, and hes offered 1000 dollars to donate to charity if anyone can prove he did.

  • Right Wired ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Funny, they also falsely stated that Global warming was a concern in 1959, too:

“A WARMER EARTH EVIDENT AT POLES; Arctic Findings in Particular Support Theory of Rising Global Temperatures”

    February 15, 1959, Sunday
Special to The New York Times.

    • BoscoBolt

Thank goodness that Al Gore came along and elevated the “theory” to a “settled science”, so that he could make money off of it, and so that governments could use it for wealth redistribution purposes.

  • sobmaz

Does the United States really have so many people who refute Science? Yes, it may be hard to believe, but virtually every scientist who ever discovered anything got a paycheck from someone else, eventually, yet here we are, we made it to the moon and the “Dick Tracy” wrist band communication is basically here with cell phones.
So all you dumbbells who dispute what science says because scientists get a pay check………DON”T HAVE CHILDREN!
Ever hear of an eco sphere? Change the gas and your sphere will change and not for the good.

  • TheKingJAK

The phenomenon is always present, and it regularly dips down into the lower latitudes multiple times a year. Much of the media simply hyped it beyond belief and misconstrued what it is.

  • CrustyB

I saw Polar Vortex open for Devo back in ’88.

  • porgiefirefighter

After we perish from global warming/cooling, at this point, what difference does it make?

  • JR48

The media didn’t create the polar vortex but they certainly created the stupid ass hype about it.

  • Underdog_Is_Here

So what if the term “polar vortex” dates back to ’59? It does not alter the fact that nothing we humans have done has had an effect on the sun. Right now there’s a lack of sunspot activity, which has caused a cold-streak in our weather. Wonder what Al Gore’s plan for regulating sunspot activity might be?

  • LegalizeShemp

Not only is polar vortex not new, they exist on any planet that rotates.

  • Vernon Yost

So now Al, why this year are we blessed with this term? I say someone thought it may be helpful to ones cause or whatever. WHat’s next….naming snowstorms? oops, done that too.
