Barack Obama got a Twitter drubbing tonight as a result of comparing US Navy ships to obsolete war horses and bayonets. We’re sure that all of our fine sailors appreciated hearing their Commander in Chief declare them obsolete.  As for us denizens of the interwebs, well, someone should have told the president how memes work before they gave him that line. Oh, right, he was being prepped by John Kerry. Never mind.

Of course, not everyone thought Obama’s insult was a bad thing.

Well, there goes whatever chance she had of going on a USO tour any time soon.

Unfortunately there are actually MORE bayonets now. In 1916 there were 140,000 enlisted in the US military. Today there are 203,000 active marines – all marines have a standard issue bayonet and are trained to use them in combat.

He needs to be impeached… now! You’re the freaking commander-in-chief, and you basically just called everyone in the Navy worthless? That’s like a coach calling a player on his team worthless, probably worse.

I don’t get why everyone is so against building more ships. We need people to build the ships, so that would open up some jobs. Then you need people to man the ships, open even more jobs. There is literary almost no down side!

    • http://www.facebook.com/sanchezrafi Rafael Sanchez

What? What are we going to do with new battleships? Nothing. You know what building new battleships is? Military expansion. That’s bad. America needs permanent jobs. Building battleships isn’t permanent. We need people to have careers. Your suggestion is beyond ridiculous.

      • Maxwell

Temporary work is better then no work. Not to mention while people are manning the new ships in the navy they’ll earn this nifty little thing called the G.I. Bill. That can most of their college tuition so they can earn a degree and start a career. If done correctly, military expansion isn’t bad. Also, I can tell you’ve never been in the military, otherwise you would know how often navy ships are used in numerous operations.

But I suppose building a road is a permanent job? lol You build battleships so that you don’t need to use them. I don’t really expect you to understand that though.

        • Hayner

no, you build battleships to fight the Nazi’s, but if you want your military to be at all relevant you build missiles and other modern weapons that are adaptable, upgradeable, and can be integrated into our current weapons platforms (aircraft carriers, Navy aircraft, submarines, destroyers, etc.) and can disable chinese warships before they even know you’re targeting them

      • YERMOM182

      • J. Cox

      • Brandon Billings

Lets go ahead and tell all the electricans, contractors, designers, metal workers, plumbers, and military who will work on this ship that we should not build it because Mr. Sanchez thinks its not permanent and they do not have careers.
While were at it lets stop building schools, skyscrapers, and roads because they are not permanent jobs.

What makes America great is we build one ship and finish the job and those people move on to the next project and make it bigger and better than the the previous one

Obama’s horses and bayonets comment does not make a comparison to the navy. Rather, it was an answer to Romney’s assertion that Obama doesn’t view the military as important to our defense, using as an example the fact that the navy is the smallest it’s ever been since before the Cold War. Obama’s reply means that with the advent of technology we rely on less manpower as in the days of bayonets and horses and more on battleships and submarines, meaning that the navy has, in fact, not shrunk but increased technologically in size. Get it?

    • dannyboy

I did 5 years in the Navy, the navy has been down sizing for a while. Its not that its worthless but the fact is an even an aircraft carrier (the one i was on) USS John F. Kennedy CV-67 is obsolete. The shit is no longer in workin condition. They can now have a predator drone do precision air strikes, monitor for sea pirates and have smaller ships that go inland and shallow rivers for humanitarian aid. The days of Big Navy with 5000 crewmen and pilots is slowly depleting. So the president is absolutely right. Its not battle ships any more. The navy is not worthless its different and maybe even alittle lean.

Very well said. The only credentials Obama has are as a community organizer. If he had been interviewed for an executive job in private sector, he would likely have had to provide copies of college transcripts, more experience in leadership and references. g-main,
A salute to you. You’ve reminded me of how much time I spent in bayonet practice.
Obama’s presidency, and candidacy, have caused me to reflect on the number of potential employee’s resumes I have read over the years. I believe that Obama’s 2008 resume would have fit on one page, maybe four paragraphs. Like him or not, McCain’s would have resembled a small telephone book. The same is true now.
Based strictly on his practical experience, I do not believe that I would have hired Obama for anything more than a minor spot in the HR Department. Considering his personal associations, I would not have hired him for love nor money.

        • realgrassroots2

I love how Obama looked down his nose and called Romney out on not having had the opportunity for more “foreign policy experience”…as if Obama had one stinkin’ iota of foreign policy experience in 2008…NOT ONE…so he had to hitch is wagon the village idiot, Joe Biden for the foreign policy experience. I don’t trust either one of them, expecially since it has come out this evening that both the WH Sit Room AND Obama’s private residence had both received wire messages directly from Benghazi that the Embassy was under attack…and Obama simply went to Vegas.

Horses and mules are still being used in active service. They can go where vehicles cannot go and they can carry packs. Meanwhile, this President seems to think it is Ok for his Secretary of Interior to illegally destroy our wlld horses and burros and remove them from their federally protected land, so the government can seize control of these lands so that his administration can sell the land to the President’s cronies for their personal portfolios.

      • BigDogJunction

Well, to tell the truth, the whole boat/ship thing is for boot camp and civilians. Trust me, most sailors call it their boat.

Can’t speak for the bubbleheads, though.

However, the first time we (I was stationed on frigates, my son is on LHD), we came up alongside the Mighty Mo (dating myself), I made the observation, “This is a boat. THAT is a SHIP.” Of course, we got rid of those behemoths of intimidation.

      • Amos

Every Marine is a Rifleman, and on the end of said rifle is a sharp pointy thing called a bayonet. The bayonet is issued at the same time as the M16-A2, they are usually dull, so it hurts the person you have to stab with it that much more.

Really? You do know that at the start of WW I, we almost did not have a military. And I can assure you we have way more bayonets today than we did in 1914. In the Marines and the army if you’re issued a rifle you’re issued a bayonet. Now we have upwards of ten more divisions than in 1914.
As to horses he have more spec ops units than we did cavalry so we may have more horses as well.

          • http://twitter.com/cottagetravel Ricki Ryan

And that is just in the Marines! Add the Army in there and you have a lot more bayonets! Less horses yes, less bayonets? no way.

          • Armando

I did: http://www.stripes.com/blogs/the-rumor-doctor/the-rumor-doctor-1.104348/has-the-army-eliminated-bayonet-training-1.137356 The Army’s last bayonet charge happened in February 1951 during the Korean War, but there were instances during Vietnam when troops fixed bayonets during intense combat, according to the Army.
In 2004, British troops reportedly fixed bayonets when they warded off Shiite militiamen in Iraq, but that has been an isolated case.
U.S. Army units have not issued soldiers bayonets for deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, said Matt Larsen, the former director of the Army’s combatives program.

          • Ohyan

The Army still issues bayonets and teaches how to use them only they omitted the bayonet course from basic training. The commander of the British troops won the Vic for his part in that assault, so it did actuallu happened and finally I read more about bayonets in the past two days than I have over the past 30 years and the new one my fellow Marines use is state of the art.

          • RightThinking1

Current inventory of bayonets by U.S. Army ~420,000
Current inventory of bayonets by Marines ~200,000, with plans to acquire an additional 175,000
            See: http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2012/10/23/not-to-be-a-stickler-on-bayonets-but/
Now, since the standing Army of 1916 was only 110,000 or so, it is safe to say that Oblamer was wrong on that. I can’t say that I am surprised that liberals are all atwitter over a ‘zinger’ that wasn’t true. They are pathologically atwitter over things that are not true. The scary thing is, once confronted with facts, they retain their false beliefs. There is a term for that…, ‘delusional’.

  • James Michael

Obama never said we didn’t use bayonets, he said we used to have more. I was in the U.S. Army for 3 years in the 1980’s and never saw a bayonet. And the Army did not issue bayonets to troops going either to Iraq or Afghanistan. They no longer have a bayonet assault course. Marines might still be issued them because it’s the most technology they can understand.

    • Michelle

James what are your thoughts that Obama explanation for fewer ships is because we have aircraft carriers when the Navy refers to a carrier as a “ship”? And what do you think about the Commander in Chief calling a submarine a “ship” when the very Navy he commands refers to them as boats? He is so damn clueless.

      • Mr. Fever Head

Aircraft carriers are never deployed as a single ship but as a Carrier Strike Group with many support and defense ships.

        • Michelle

Don’t think we were talking about how they’re deployed and what I said carriers are referred to as ships, Obama doesn’t seem to be aware of that. His comment last night was we have fewer ships because we have aircraft carriers and my point is, carriers are ships. My family served on Oriskany and Enterprise, I know what they called them. Even on the Navy’s website they’re referred to as ships.

    • Michelle

No, here’s what is dumb (and outrageous) – When Obama was mocking Romney for saying we have fewer ships, Obama said we have these things called aircraft carriers. The US Navy refers to a carrier as a ship. Then Obama said we have ships that go underwater. The US Navy refers to a submarine is a boat, not a ship. In his attempt to be mocking and sarcastic, he actually revealed that the Commander in Chief of the US Armed Forces has NO CLUE a carrier is a ship and a submarine is a boat. That is beyond pathetic.

We all get it that Obama said “less” (though he should have said fewer, but I digress), not that we do not use horses and bayonets. However, when taken in context with the whole exchange, his rebuttal to Romney comes across as “Hey, we don’t really need as many horses and bayonets, so why do we need as many vessels (vessels since there is a difference between ships and submarines)?” Here is a refresher on what exactly was said:

Romney: “Our Navy is smaller now than any time since 1917. The
Navy said they needed 313 ships to carry out their mission. We’re now
down to 285. We’re headed down to the — to the low 200s if we go through
with sequestration. That’s unacceptable to me. I want to make sure that
we have the ships that are required by our Navy.”

    Obama’s
response: “Well, governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets. The nature of our military’s changed. We have these
things called aircraft carriers where planes land on them. We have these
ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines. And so the question is
not a game of Battleship where we’re counting ships. It’s what are our
    capabilities.”

Obviously the nature of the military has changed, this isn’t 1917 anymore, but Obama missed the point of Romney’s argument. The Navy needs more ships, but under Obama that isn’t going to happen. If it is truly about what our capabilities are, then the Navy would have the ships it would need and cuts, which the Defense Department opposes, would not be happening. It is about “counting ships” when the Navy needs X amount, but the administration won’t give it to them.

If Obama wanted to actually refute Romney’s statement, then he could have done so without the snark and needless comparison. Tell him and everyone else why the you think the military is fine the way it is, why the Navy doesn’t need more ships. Tell us why the nature of our military has changed in such a way for you to believe the status quo, and budget cuts, will work out just fine, despite what people in the military actually say. Instead of coming off as an in the know Commander-in-Chief, Obama gave a condescending and belittling response. Debates shouldn’t be about zingers and sarcasm, I mean is that what you are looking for in a president anyway?. Rebutting what Romney said could have been done without the horses and bayonets line, which didn’t prove any real point to the debate on the military. Some people laughed, while others saw it as an allusion that horses and bayonets aren’t needed/useful, or that the usefulness of a strong Navy is as useful as horses and bayonets.
