I have seen CODEPINK treat a lot of things like a war crime. Fighter jets. Diplomats. The occasional sandwich shop that dared to stay open.
I was not emotionally prepared, or have had enough coffee, for the spa aisle.
How I wish I were just being a clever Twitchy-er and making a joke but nope, I'm not. Crazy-Town went to Whole Foods and got all sorts of bent out of shape over Dead Sea salt.
Seriously.
Watch:
Whole Foods is selling Dead Sea salts labeled “Made in Israel” products tied to the exploitation of Palestinian land and natural resources, while the Dead Sea itself faces a devastating ecological crisis.

We spoke with the store manager and filed a complaint. Now we’re asking… pic.twitter.com/kKLWH9Jfs7
Medea Benjamin marched into Whole Foods, pink “Free Palestine” shirt blazing, two tubs of Dead Sea salt held up like contraband, and announced that a 365 house brand labeled “Product of Israel” is stolen Palestinian resources.
Don't laugh.
Ok, fine. Laugh.
Then she talked to a manager.
Then she filed a complaint.
Then she asked the internet to do the same, because nothing says “serious foreign policy” like deputizing shoppers against magnesium flakes.
The pitch is that Israel is looting the Dead Sea, the sea is collapsing into sinkholes, Palestinians are locked out, and your foot soak is therefore an occupation. Amazon, she notes, is not about to stop selling it. So the battlefield is Whole Foods, where a store manager now gets to moonlight as the International Court of Justice between the orchids and the checkout.
What I actually see is the activist-industrial complex running out of targets and settling on bath products. If your revolution requires a customer-service ticket about salt, you are not dismantling an empire. You are bothering a person in a green apron.
If Whole Foods caves, the salts will still exist. They will just move one aisle over, or one website over, while Medea films the next installment in produce. I will give her this much: she committed to the bit. She named the product, named the country on the label, and demanded a boycott of minerals.
That is not peace work. That is a Yelp review with a flag on the shirt.
