In a striking turn after Michigan’s contentious Democrat Senate primary, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer endorsed progressive Abdul El-Sayed following the latter’s narrow victory over the more moderate Rep. Haley Stevens — the candidate Schumer had actively backed throughout the race.
Yet the olive branch came amid ongoing tensions: El-Sayed, a vocal critic of the Democrat establishment, has repeatedly called for Schumer to be replaced as party leader, expressing a clear preference for Sen. Chris Van Hollen and framing Schumer’s approach as overly aligned with corporate interests and out of step with the party’s progressive base.
