As the deadline looms to ensure food stamps are renewed for November, a big debate centering around treatment of the poor has popped up online. In essence, some people say those who want the food stamp program to be reformed just hate poor people and don't want them to have any comfort foods or sweet treats.
Taking snap benefits away from people not only directly harms those people but it will also harm the economy. It doesn’t “save money” it kills people & tanks the economy. For every snap dollar it generates 1.50 - 1.75 in economic activity. It benefits none of us to withhold snap.

🧵Everyone deserves access to healthy food — but banning groceries for SNAP recipients is punitive and stigmatizing. Point blank.

Last year, I passed a bill to expand food access in underserved neighborhoods. Governor Landry vetoed it. pic.twitter.com/QDrmZkIvjO
SNAP is intended to be supplemental. Because people are receiving it, that should free up some money for them to buy sweet treats or convenience foods, if they so choose.
Guess what? People who don't get food stops, folks in the middle class, don't get all the treats they want either. They budget. To assume those living off the kindness of taxpayers shouldn't have to do the same, is frankly insulting.
My hubby and I make decent money. We live in a HCL area. We went to Hawaii this year off his Christmas bonus last year. I fill up the gas tank all the way. I don’t buy soda because it’s too expensive for us. Just saying. 🤷♀️ #snap

What a concept! Regular people have to budget and it's just fine to assume those requiring assistance will do the same.
I don't really want to weigh in on the discourse around welfare, but for the "you should only eat beans and rice on benefits, no fun stuff," people I do wonder if they've ever had a stressful day where the entire system of their continuing functioning sanity seemingly rests upon…

SNAP recipients don't only have to eat those things. They could choose some of those staple foods to ensure their health and well being, and use their own income to provide themselves luxuries.
again, the “S” in SNAP is supplemental. If the taxpayers of America are providing you money for “everyday” food so you can buy more food than you could afford alone, use SNAP for the foods you need and your own money for your snacks and treats. https://t.co/tYLhQyhbTW

just because someone receives snap doesn’t mean they can’t spend their own money on special treats

That's the nice thing about your own hard earned cash. You can use it however you want. When someone else, whether the government or a family member or friend, is funding your lifestyle, there will inevitably be strings attached. That's just human nature. Also, the 'N' stands for 'nutrition'. Perhaps that means the money should be spent on nutritious food and not empty calories, processed junk and high fat snacks.
Where do I even begin. Was a cashier for 2 decades. Whole lobsters being bought with stamps. People collecting EBT cards from 3 different states (we live right on the border of all 3 states). People selling their stamps right in front of me as soon as they ran their card for…

Our monthly food budget for 2 adults and 5 children is $1100/month, including all non-grocery items (household goods like TP, soap, etc.).

We eat healthy food we prepare ourselves, including our own bread.
We drink Folgers, and only have fruit juice at meals.
$3000/Mo on SNAP?…
It's spitting in the face of the average American to provide luxuries for some while those who don't qualify for benefits barely get by.
If you want a gas station coke and a packet of crispy carbs... Go right ahead, but don't expect me to pay for it.

Sorry if people feel that sounds harsh, but it's flat out facts.
