At the United Nations today, President Donald Trump accused China of “attempting to meddle” in the 2018 midterm elections:

Watch here:
"We found that China has been attempting to interfere with our upcoming 2018 election." – Donald Trump believes that China is working against him in the US midterms because he is the first president to challenge them on trade.

China denied the claim:
BREAKING: Chinese foreign minister rejects Trump accusation of election interference, says `we do not and will not interfere'
— The Associated Press (@AP) September 26, 2018
But… there’s proof. China literally just took out a 4-page propaganda ad in the Des Moines Register which is what the president was referring to:
Trump rakes China for trying to “MEDDLE” in midterms.
He’s referring to the 4-page ad in the @DMRegister.
“Regrettably, we've found that China has been attempting to interfere in our upcoming 2018 election, coming up in November, against my administration,” Trump said at UN. https://t.co/mPpSOPZNSO

Bloomberg’s Jennifer Jacobs, who has been covering Iowa politics for years, broke down the 4-page propaganda spread in this thread. Doesn’t this seem like a bigger deal than a few thousand dollars worth of Pepe memes on Facebook?

The advertisement, labeled as paid for by the “China Daily, and official publication of the People’s Republic of China” is like a 4-page tweet from the Chinese government.
It calls the trade war with Trump the “fruit of a president’s folly.” pic.twitter.com/shDAOZlC3X

In 15 years of covering Iowa news, I cannot recall the Chinese making a play like this.
Certainly unprecedented for China to take out a four-page advertisement in the DMR.

China uses this advertising format regularly—“news” inserts have appeared in Nepal, Australia, U.S., etc. per @kashishds, @lillebuen, @DavidMDrucker and others.
