As an Italian, this writer strongly believes our hands are essential to verbal communication. As the old joke goes, if you want to get an Italian to shut up, just tie their hands behind their back.
But there's something about the way California Gov. Gavin Newsom does it that makes us want to curl up and die from the sheer cringe.
Of course, it doesn't help Newsom that he is a complete phony; a political chameleon who will say anything that his consultants tell him to. His hand gestures, like everything he says, are not organic or genuine, but overly rehearsed and intentionally flamboyant.
In a recent appearance on Don Lemon's podcast, with its tens of viewers, we got to see that not only is Newsom a complete sham, but he can be two different types of fraud in the same interview.
First up, we get "Tough Guy Gavin," denouncing everyone he can think of in the Trump administration and even conservative media hosts for being "complicit." Complicit in what, exactly, we have no idea. Neither does Newsom in his profanity-laced tirade, since he never specifies anything.
But just look how forceful his hands are!

His public persona mutates depending on the desired audience, the current political trends and/or his strategic media goals of the moment.

... string of profanity, finger wagging and calls for 'accountability' for everyone from JD Vance to Sean Hannity.
Looks right into the camera for the performance, just like he was probably looking right into the mirror when he rehearsed it.
Does this look like genuine righteous anger to you, or scripted theater designed to impress gullible viewers about how he 'really means business' like his DSA competition.
Count me in the latter camp.

You can even tell it's all an act because Newsom doesn't even bother pretending that he's in a conversation with Lemon. He just looks straight into the camera as he surely did during the dress rehearsal.
Consultants: Gavin. Look into the camera when you do this one. Eye to eye contact. Connects you directly with the viewer. Builds trust. Wag the finger too. Shows you're serious. But above everything: Just be yourself.

We're betting his advisors even told him to repeat the word complicit as often as he could in 49 seconds.
Because it SOUNDS scary.
Believe it or not, however, Newsom gets even phonier in the same interview.
After wagging his fingers at everyone from Marco Rubio to Sean Hannity, Newsom then turns around and giggles with Lemon about how he proudly gives healthcare to illegal aliens.
And for that, he brings back his "jazz hands."

In an effort to appeal to the DSA (who likely hate him), Newsom has planted himself firmly in Stage 3 of Democrat denial: "It's happening, on a massive scale, and here's why that's a good thing."
There's only one stage left — "It's happening, and now we're making it mandatory."
