Usually when I write the words "fact checker" they are in quotes, not unlike the word "journalist." The reason is that so many "fact checkers" and "journalists" are a lot of things, but actual fact checkers and journalists aren't among them.
One example from last summer is this doozy from PolitiFact trying to run cover for Zohran Mamdani.
Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, in 2021 used the phrase “seizing the means of production.” He did not elaborate on that and we could not find evidence that it was part of his 2025 New York City mayoral platform.https://t.co/nV9U0lrrAS

Mamdani "didn't elaborate on seizing the means of production so it isn't fair to conclude he's talking like a communist" was peak "fact checking."
This next one is more of a non-fact check because it was concluded the claim didn't warrant one.
At issue was a claim that Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong has called to "abolish the Senate." She has absolutely done that.

Another Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate wanted "fact checkers," specifically PolitiFact in this case, to shine some light on that one. Guess what happened next.
