I'm not an evangelical, and I doubt that The Bulwark's Tim Miller is either. But he's a scold just like David French. I don't know Miller's religious beliefs, but he believes that evangelicals got what they wanted when a pastor's wife was deported. What did they want? "Indiscriminate" deportation of Christians who followed immigration laws, but were guilty of being brown."
Here's the news story that triggered Miller:
ICE deports Florida pastor's wife—even though judge issued stay of deportation order.

She was denied her medication—shackled by wrist, stomach & ankles—leaving severe bruising.
"We paid everything they asked us, filled out forms, and not skipping anything," her daughters said.… pic.twitter.com/26wuTthF9V
The post continues:
That didn't stop ICE from deporting her back to Mexico, "With only the clothes on her back."
Agents refused to take her to a court where she could plead her case saying, "That's not our job."
Maria Isidro was approved for an I-130—also called a Petition for Alien Relative—to secure her legal status in 2023.

Hooray! An illegal being deported for being guilty of being brown!
Homeland Security stepped in with a fact-check:
FACT CHECK. Maria Isidro, an illegal alien from Mexico, was issued a final order of removal from an immigration judge on Oct. 21, 2004, after she failed to show up for her court date. She has exhausted all due process and has no legal remedies left to pursue.

After failing to… pic.twitter.com/9emAmy5xKa
The post continues:
… self-deport and leave the U.S. for more than two decades, ICE arrested her on June 3, 2025, and deported her on June 11, 2025.
Any allegations that Isidro did not receive medical care are FALSE. ICE provides comprehensive medical care from the moment an alien enters custody. DHS takes its commitment to promoting safe, secure, humane environments for those in our custody very serious.
"Leaving severe bruising" … according to whom? Her daughters?
I’m skeptical.

The deliberate abuse of my empathy has reached the point of I have none left to give.
— NowLookieHere (@LookieNow) June 19, 2025
Too bad, so sad. NGTFO.
Playing the Christian card is a cheap way to avoid any actual discussion.
Yeah, that whole "being in America illegally" thing is actually kind of important.
— Red Alert Florida (@RedAlertFlorida) June 19, 2025
She had thirty years to get legal. Cry me a f**king river.
— danya shiver (@thedashrevolt) June 19, 2025
Not "yet" a citizen? She had 30 years.
— Kate (@lonestar_kate) June 19, 2025
If they followed immigration laws, then they would be citizens, but they're not.
— Mary Ladd 🇺🇸 🇮🇱 (@Mary_Ladd_IL) June 19, 2025
I see from DHS's post that People Magazine has gotten in on the narrative.
I voted for this
— BourbonBeetle (@BourbonBeetle) June 19, 2025
Americans voted for mass deportation of all illegals, regardless of their faith or skin color.
I don’t understand, if she got married why not just file the necessary paperwork? Very odd
— Phil (@greekgodfit) June 19, 2025
"Pastor's wife" is meant to bring emotional responses. Mexico needs churches, too.
— ✝️ Shawna Nonna 🇺🇸 (@ShawnaNonna777) June 19, 2025
Why didn't her husband petition for her green card? There is more to this story.
— Kerry Hutchins 🇬🇧👉🇺🇸 (@kerry98198) June 19, 2025
But you're not going to hear it from People or The Bulwark.
The Christian card and the "guilty of being brown" card are no longer accepted.
