TDS alert: WaPo analyst surprised President Trump congratulated Poland on its invasion by Nazis

As Twitchy pointed out Saturday, not every single thing that President Trump says or tweets needs a snarky response from The Resistance. Vox’s Aaron Rupar actually deleted his tweet about Trump claiming to have invented Labor Day when it turned out he was reading exactly the same proclamation that every president, including Barack Obama, reads that day.

So no, Trump doesn’t think he invented Labor Day, and we’re also pretty sure he didn’t congratulate Poland on being invaded by the Nazis — but Aaron Blake of The Washington Post seems to think he did:

As we know, Trump canceled his trip to Poland, which was commemorating the anniversary of the start of World War II, in order to stay behind and monitor Hurricane Dorian; Vice President Mike Pence went in his place. But on Sunday, Trump was asked about the trip, and this is what he said:

I do have a great message for Poland. And we have Mike Pence, our vice president, is just about landing right now. And he is representing me. I look forward to being there soon.

But I just want to congratulate Poland. It’s a great country with great people. We also have many Polish people in our country; it could be 8 million. We love our Polish friends. And I will be there soon.

It is just us or did we miss the part where he congratulated Poland on its Nazi invasion? How does, “It’s a great country with great people” play into that narrative?

Blake’s analysis:

President Trump is known to make the odd comment here and there about foreign nations, often because he doesn’t seem particularly versed in what’s happening in them. But even by his standards, this was quite a weekend.

Trump was asked Sunday about the trip to Poland he canceled to monitor Hurricane Dorian. Asked if he had a message for that country, which was commemorating the anniversary of the start of World War II, Trump decided to … congratulate it?

Congratulate it on being a great country with great people? That’s not odd.

“Oh, and great job on being invaded by Nazi Germany.”

The analysis is bad, but the clickbait headline is just unforgivable. And reporters wonder why we don’t trust them anymore.
