We’re used to flyover country being slandered by lefty journalists, and the suburbs have taken their share of abuse, too. But on Friday, Vox energy politics blogger David Roberts made it perfectly clear how he feels about suburbanites.
His Twitter bio says he’s from Tennessee but now lives in Seattle, which explains a lot.
Sometimes I think about America's sedentary, heart-diseased, fast-food gobbling, car-addicted suburbanites, sitting watching TV in their suburban castles, casually passing judgment on refugees who have walked 1000s of miles to escape oppression, and … well, it makes me mad.

These are people who proclaim their victimhood when Starbucks fails to include sufficient Christmas kitsch on its cups. But these refugees just want handouts, apparently.
— David Roberts (@drvox) November 2, 2018
Don’t hold back, David … tells us how you really feel. Let it out.
This jerk sounds like a lovely person. You hear that suburbia…. you’re the real monsters. https://t.co/iOyPAGe5Eu

So the migrant caravan should just keep marching until it reaches the promised land of Seattle, which offers plenty of vegan cafés, bicycle lanes, and overpriced apartments? Imagine the horror if suburbanites opened their homes to the refugees and got them hooked on cars?
This is how Democrats talk about regular Americans. https://t.co/e4PudsTRqD
— Phil Kerpen (@kerpen) November 3, 2018
I’m confused.
Is it bad or good to disparagingly pass judgment on large groups of strangers based on negative group stereotypes? https://t.co/huhI0Wub56
— Conor Friedersdorf (@conor64) November 3, 2018
It's broad statements about suburbanites like this, that are just plain ignorant. You can't just bucket one group of people into one belief system. Open your mind.

The left hates your guts. If you don't move to the NE or the west coast, you're a hillbilly and your state doesn't deserve their electoral vote. This is why you can never reason with them. Vote them out and mock their enablers mercilessly. ? https://t.co/wrNsS6GoOc

Previously:”Vox writer David Roberts asked his Twitter followers whether white people “have a positive or negative effect on America” in a poll on Tuesday.” https://t.co/juo95zHhas

Yeah, remember that Twitter poll on whether white people had a positive or negative effect on America? Same guy.
One of those takes where if you support the same aim as its author, you're wincing because it could only possibly make things worse https://t.co/DeAtbJWOS6

Sometimes I think about America's sedentary pundits and bloggers casually passing judgement on suburbanites enjoying their weekend, and … well, it makes me sad.

Sometimes I think abt America’s bougie Soul Cycle riders going nowhere on fake bikes, HPV ridden, overpriced avocado toast eating, pharmaceutical addicted city dwellers watching Netflix in their rented 200 sq ft boxes, casually passing judgement on fellow citizens & I feel sad https://t.co/NThLJqTV5g
— MLH ♥️ (@just_mindy) November 3, 2018
Sometimes I think about how the people driving both the conditions that force immigration and the reactionary backlash against them are rich, vascular psychos with personal trainers but I guess that's less fun than blaming it on fat, implicitly poor peoplehttps://t.co/J33uRFFNjE

This is trash. https://t.co/UEKuAJeFtj

Here’s a thought: Maybe don’t use fat bodies as an illustration of every negative thing you want to depict. Maybe fat people deserve to live our lives without being constantly judged unworthy of your respect. https://t.co/9iKuJXmf6m
— Terri Parlett (@terrancethered) November 3, 2018
You know how we keep talking about how folks on the left have a major problem with fat people?
Here’s a real bad, real common take on how we’re to blame for America’s xenophobia & racism. https://t.co/GdDBJvetvo
— Your Fat Friend (@yrfatfriend) November 3, 2018
This is not helpful. This is 100% condescension. https://t.co/LxRXOx8j9p

America is so awful that’s why refugees are walking here to beg to get in. ?♀️ https://t.co/BkCBxfG3eX

Show us on the doll where the suburbanite touched you… https://t.co/8JUIGTaeFy

Really, really cool that as a fat person I get to be blamed specifically by Totally Woke White Guys for something I don't have anything to do with and don't support…just for being fat. Really cool, Dave. https://t.co/34vqhlfVFm
— Ocean Spray Cranberry Sauce is Good Don't @ Me (@rainaftersno) November 2, 2018
shitting on an imagined group of americans for being fat and lazy is not clever or woke or good for refugees, and America's health problems are a consequence of the same systems that feed on ginned-up racial hate https://t.co/1zdzmdlXy4

Lord help us, he’s not done. But we are.
1. OK, a number of people have deemed this tweet Problematic — have said it "fat shames" and that it unfairly generalizes about suburbanites. So let's talk about it. https://t.co/EEAobimZP2
— David Roberts (@drvox) November 3, 2018
Let’s not.
