Obama 2.0: New Republic asks if Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez can 'save the planet'

We apologize if any of our readers are suffering from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez fatigue, but it’s difficult not to write about her ever since her surprise primary victory over incumbent U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley. After all, the 28-year-old Democratic Socialist has been presented as the future of the Democratic Party by none other than DNC Chair Tom Perez, and that’s fine with us.

The mainstream media seems charmed by her, but lefty sites are smitten. Take The New Republic, for example, which asks if Ocasio-Cortez can “save the planet.”

Hang on now; let’s hear what The New Republic has to say. Their argument seems to hinge on Ocasio-Cortez’s plan to fight climate change by transitioning the United States to a 100-percent renewable energy system by 2035. That sounds like a good job for a first-term congresswoman with no political experience:

To achieve this ambitious goal, she has proposed implementing what she calls a “Green New Deal,” a Franklin Delano Roosevelt–like plan to spur “the investment of trillions of dollars and the creation of millions of high-wage jobs,” according to her official website. “The Green New Deal we are proposing will be similar in scale to the mobilization efforts seen in World War II or the Marshall Plan,” she told HuffPost last week. “We must again invest in the development, manufacturing, deployment, and distribution of energy, but this time green energy.”

Um, wasn’t Barack Obama supposed to do all this during his eight years in office? Solyndra, anyone? “Green jobs” czar Van Jones? High-speed rail connecting the country? Slowing the rise of the oceans? Putting coal miners out of business?
