Tamir Rice protesters march, lie down in Cleveland intersections, block traffic

During a press conference this morning on a grand jury’s decision not to indict the two police officers involved in the shooting death of 12-year-old Tamir Rice, Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson encouraged demonstrators to exercise their right to protest peacefully.

The quote isn’t managing to fit into any tweets, but Jackson said that he’s not worried about protests. “People have a right. We actually welcome it, and we provide police protection to them when they come to Cleveland,” he said.

And the people did indeed protest this afternoon, marching through downtown Cleveland and lying down in major intersections to block traffic. Police were successful, though, in blocking protesters from reaching major highways at each end of E. 9th Street.

It’s unclear what’s next for protesters, but one demonstrator suggested Cleveland should become like Ferguson, Mo.
