Maryland governor 'outraged' that Obama administration denying FEMA funds for riot damage

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan held a press conference today to announce the closure of the Baltimore City Detention Center, which he deemed “the worst prison in America.”

However, Hogan also took the opportunity to blast the Obama administration once again for denying FEMA aid to assist in the cleanup of Baltimore following the Freddie Gray riots, saying he was “disgusted and outraged.”

WJZ-TV reports:

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is refusing to reverse its denial of disaster aid to help Maryland and Baltimore recover millions of dollars in costs stemming from rioting in the city in April.

Gov. Larry Hogan’s office announced the decision Thursday. FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate said in a letter to the Republican governor that his agency had thoroughly reviewed Hogan’s appeal.

Spokesman Matt Clark said Hogan is “disgusted and outraged” by the decision.

Maryland provided an estimate of $19.4 million in costs for protective measures and damage from rioting after the death of Freddie Gray from injuries he suffered in police custody.

Clark said in a statement:

FEMA’s decision is obviously very disappointing, and extremely difficult to understand, but we’ll move on and will remain focused on recovery efforts. Baltimore experienced rioting, looting and arson during an event that sent dozens of police officers to city hospitals with serious injuries. If this level of violence and destruction under a nine day State of Emergency and a five day curfew don’t qualify for assistance, it’s hard to imagine what would.
