Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby seeks order to keep Freddie Gray autopsy secret

Several reporters from the Baltimore Sun are tweeting this afternoon that Baltimore State’s Attorney and UniverSoul Circus guest ringmaster Marilyn Mosby is seeking a protective order that would keep the autopsy of Freddie Gray from the public. Six Baltimore police officers have been indicted in connection with Gray’s death from a spinal injury while in police custody.

Sun reporter Kevin Rector filed today’s story.

Rector writes:

Mosby discussed that intention in a court filing Monday, in which she also asked the court for more time to respond to defense motions that she and her office be removed from the case and that the case be tried outside of Baltimore.

Mosby’s office has also sought a gag order, which would prevent those involved in the case from discussing it in public, and broken with tradition by not providing the autopsy report to Baltimore Police.

Gregg Leslie, legal defense director for the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, said that judges will sometimes grant gag orders in high-profile cases like this one to avoid the “big headache” that comes from increased media scrutiny. Mosby’s office, however, should have to show there is a compelling state interest served by keeping Gray’s autopsy confidential, Leslie added.
