First lady urges graduates to reject media's culture of celebrity worship

When Michelle Obama, during a commencement speech at Bowie State University today, urged young people to expand their career dreams beyond “fantasizing about being a baller or a rapper,” we couldn’t help but agree. We can’t say we disagree either with her entreaty that students “stand against the media that elevates today’s celebrity gossip instead of the serious issues of our time.” It’s difficult, though, not to be reminded of the very cozy relationship between the Obamas and “first couple” Jay-Z and Beyoncé. Come to think of it, there were a lot of serious issues that needed the president’s attention while he was busy with his celebrity fundraisers.

In other news, the White House announced today that the Obamas would host another concert Wednesday night, featuring Carole King, Gloria Estefan, Billy Joel, Jesse McCartney, Emeli Sandé, James Taylor and Trisha Yearwood. The nation’s non-celebrities can see a replay on taxpayer-funded PBS May 28.
