“Lie of the Year: the Romney campaign’s ad on Jeeps made in China,” announced PolitiFact earlier today.

During a campaign speech in Defiance, Ohio Romney misstated Jeep’s plans, claiming Chrysler was considering moving “all” Jeep production to China. Most likely it was an honest mistake, probably the result of a confusing statement the previous week by Mike Manley, president and CEO of the Jeep brand:

Fiat SpA (F), majority owner of Chrysler Group LLC, plans to return Jeep output to China and may eventually make all of its models in that country, according to the head of both automakers’ operations in the region.

“The volume opportunity for us is very significant,” Manley, who is also president of the Jeep brand, said in an interview at Chrysler’s Auburn Hills, Michigan, headquarters. “We’re reviewing the opportunities within existing capacity” as well as “should we be localizing the entire Jeep portfolio or some of the Jeep portfolio.”

But what exactly did Romney’s ad — the one awarded “Lie of the Year” by PolitiFact — say about this?

Obama took GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy, and sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China. Mitt Romney will fight for every American job.

You can see the ad for yourself above.

Liberal journalists insisted the ad was terribly deceptive even as they acknowledged that every word of it was true.

Here’s what Kevin Drum of Mother Jones wrote:

Technically, every word of this is true. Obama did force GM and Chrysler through a managed bankruptcy. Fiat did end up buying Chrysler. And Chrysler is thinking about building Jeeps in China. But remember my three-part test to judge how deceptive a statement is?

  1. What was the speaker trying to imply?
  2. What would it take to state things accurately?
  3. How much would accuracy damage the speaker’s point?

On this scale, Romney’s ad rates about 9 out of 10 on the deceptiveness scale. He’s obviously trying to imply that American jobs will be shipped overseas; stating things accurately would require wholesale revisions; and doing so would completely destroy Romney’s point. But he doesn’t care. He’s got an election to win, and if scaring Ohio autoworkers is what it takes, then that’s what it takes. It’s truly nauseating.

And here’s what Jonathan Cohn of The New Republic wrote:

Although the statements about Chrysler are true individually, together they imply that the Obama Administration’s action led to the outsourcing of American jobs. That is obviously false, both in the specific sense of what Chrysler is doing and in the more general sense of what the entire auto industry is doing.

That’s the lie of the year?

Not this:

Not this:

And certainly not this.

Really, PolitiFact? Really?!?

The winners write the history books. That doesn’t make it true.

Probably need to add to that narrative that the only reason Chrysler was able to pay back bailout money is because Fiat bought them. The only reason Fiat was able to buy them is because they got a US Government loan of taxpayer money. So, in reality, the bailout money was not repaid, the debt was simply shifted to another column. Isn’t this the same as check hiding and isn’t it illegal?

    • boris1421

Do the math. 8 billion spent, 6 billion returned and 1 million jobs saved. Jobs that average 29 dollars an hour. $29 x 40 hrs = $1160 a week. 1160 x 52 weeks = $60.320 a year. $60,320 x 1 million = 60 billion 320 million in recovered wages. Times that by the standard tax rate of 25% that equals over 15 billion dollars in tax revenue from jobs in one year. That’s jobs that otherwise would not be there if there hadn’t been a bailout. That also doesn’t account for state taxes, taxes from the sale of cars, and excise tax on the money spent by the people who earned the wages. Tell me how it is not good economics to spend 2 billion to ensure an over 15 billion dollar return on your investment. Romney destroyed thousands of jobs for less profit than that.

      • http://twitter.com/Daisy761 Daisy76

Oh, yeah, Romney destroyed thousands of jobs by investing in Staples, which, to this day, employs thousands and thousands of people all over the country. And that is just one company through which he single-handedly destroyed jobs.
Obama, on the other hand, bailed out banks with billions of taxpayers’ money, a good chunk of which went to the CEOs and other 1%ers. That’s bailout money that our grandchildren will be paying for. Go figure out the math on that one.

        • EEKman

Theres a false equivalency argument if i ever heard one…

Heres another way to look at it…

Out of 77 companies in which Bain Capital invested other people’s money, 33 either failed or produced no earnings. That, my friends, is a 43% failure rate.

Out of 77 companies in which Romney invested, only 10 were really good investments. 70% of Bain’s earnings came from these 10 companies. And that, my friends, is only a 13% success rate.

On the other hand. The stimulus green investments.have about a 1.4% failure rate, not 50% as Romney said.

Obama uses stimbucks to outsource jobs….Fisker now bankrupt. Green Energy jobs – Bankrupt, now China is swooping in to buy a battery company for cheap, and the tax payers are on the hook for the difference…..I did the math on the GM bailout and from what I have added up, more jobs were lost than were saved: Hundreds of dealerships, profitable GOP supporting dealerships were closed down, Gretchen Carlson’s Father’s (Fox and Friend’s Hostess) dealership was FORCED to close putting hundreds out of work. Geitner and Obama STOLE benefits and pensions from tens of thousands of workers for GM parts companies, that happened to be NON UNION, when they shut them down….you are a total idiot and your “math” doesn’t add up….For the record 54 billion was spent to bail out GM, and currently the stock is worth 27 billion, which means the tax payer is on the hook for all those billions of dollars……

      • sayitisntsoh

Boris, 1,000,000 jobs saved=#lieoftheyear GM employed 76,000 people pre bankruptcy. They now employee 74500. Your math doesn’t add up.

Amazing! You are living proof that we’ve entered the most aggressively ignorant period in human history since the Dark Ages.

      • Dencal26

Please list the thousands of jobs destroyed by Romney?

      • WisconsinPatriot

And the percentage of the 6 billion “returned “is ZERO. All of that money was alternative government loans. Two hundred some GM dealerships nationalized, aka destroyed, and ALL those jobs lost. Your math was clearly learned in a lefty public school and it SUCKS. Go peddle your lies elsewhere.

      • o0Nighthawk0o

Please. The average person that makes 50 to 60 thousand a year pays about 7% in taxes. Chrysler didn’t return a penny. Fiat borrowed, I think, 23 billion from the US government to purchace Chrysler. Is essence, they used taxpayer money to pay back taxpayer money. Oh, and not one person sitting on an assembly line stuffing a bolt in a fender is worth $29 an hour.

Reality has a well known liberal bias.

      • SpinMeNot

And so we see the delusion of the liberal progressive puke.

Reality has no bias, that is why it is reality. You want there to be bias, but it isn’t so. No amount of wishing or moral equivocation or redefining the language/narrative can make it so.

Like Streetie and so many others (there are a few exceptions I’ve seen recently) you believe that people are inherently good, and those that mean you harm can be made your friend by appeasement and deference. You are idiot and a fool.

You believe with absolute blind faith that Christians are deluded, ignorant and bigoted, that the jihadis in Gaza are freedom fighters, Islam is a religion of peace that can coexist with your liberal utopia, where the way to prosperity is tax and take, while spending more than we have.

It has never worked, it never will. Reality has no bias, hence it is called reality. Snarky answers prove only that you lack wisdom and an understanding of the absolute nature of right/wrong, good/evil.

I commend to you the old fable of the ants and the grasshopper. It pretty much covers your liberal reality.

        • EEKman

Golf clap! That’s a Troll-in-1 ladies and gentlemen!! For not getting the joke in such a spectacular fashion, I award you the entire internet for the hour (well the 8 minutes left in the hour anyway). Don’t spend it all in one place. Congratulations!

          • SpinMeNot

I appreciate the award, but I must decline. So what you are saying is that you really don’t give a crap about any of this and just trying to get the attention here that no one will provide you in the real world?

good to know, I shall ignore you from hence forth.

          • EEKman

No I have a deep desire to understand different worldviews and visit here often to get some glimmer of hope that there is some sanity left in our political process. I’ve tried different methods to communicate and usually end up with less understanding, yet I keep coming back.

My comment is in reference to the social phenomenon of protecting false belief. Once you’ve convinced yourself something is true, any further information to the contrary is almost immediately rejected and the original belief survives. Christian evangelicals for example, cant even agree that evolution exists. The greater GOP cant agree that human caused global warming exists. I can cite charlatans from the 1800’s who distributed literature that insisted the Bible supported the idea that the world was flat. Conservatives don’t absorb new information that calls into question their entire worldview well at all. They thrash about, scared and confused, rejecting the new information for as long as possible.

Republicans have confined themselves to a controlled, self affirming media bubble that invented its own reality and election polls and convinced themselves that they were winning and anything else to the contrary was just “liberal media bias” They completely failed to understand the changing demographics of the electorate and were completely gobsmacked when actual reality hit them over the head like a 2×4. The fox news coverage of Karl Rove’s reaction to the results in OHIO should be shown in every political science class until the end of time as the day the GOP met reality, and lost.

It is now, out of desperation to stay relevant, turning to authoritarian policies of changing the election and voting process in a way that is an anathema to their stated principles. They no longer believe in equal representation, instead pursuing aggressive unethical, self serving partisan policies designed solely to keep themselves in power. They no longer stand on the strength of their ideas, only on the strength of their opposition to the party in power. Mitch McConnell just recently filibustered his own debt ceiling proposal just because the Democrats were willing to support it.. That has never happened in the history of the Senate. That alone is damning evidence that the GOP exists only to oppose, not to offer ideas of its own.

in this country we have a two party system, in government. And the idea is supposed to be that the two sides both come up with ways to confront and fix the real problems facing our country. They both propose possible solutions to our real problems. And we debate between those possible solutions. And by the process of debate, we pick the best idea. That competition between good ideas, from both sides, about real problems in the real country should result in our country having better choices, better options, than if only one side is really working on the hard stuff. And if the Republican party, and the conservative movement, and the conservative media is stuck in a vacuum sealed, door locked, spin cycle of telling each other what makes them feel good, and denying the factual, lived truth of the world, then we are all deprived, as a nation, of the constructive debate between competing, feasible ideas about real problems.

The “liberal new york times” predicted the election and was 100% correct. Karl Rove, Dick Morris, Charles Krautheimer were utterly humiliated by empirical reality. Even though conservatives ruthlessly attacked Nate Silver at 538 for his methodology, even that he was “too effeminate” using things like facts and math to come to his conclusions. That is what “Reality has a liberal bias” means. Actual knowable, provable, empirical facts are rejected by the GOP as “Lies from the liberal media” as they retreat to their own safe havens of comforting beliefs overseen by charlatans like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Bill Oreilly and Sean Hannity.

Sorry you didnt get the joke.

          • SpinMeNot

How can it be a blatant lie when even the accuser admits that all the words in the ad are true? It seems to me that Politifact is the one making the spin to make it look like a lie.

On the other hand, Obama’s statement that the attack in Benghazi was triggered by a video was not a lie?
Lie of the year award goes to Obama, hands down.

      • EEKman

No it WAS a lie. Romney said that Jeep was moving production and american Jobs to china, when in reality Jeep was expanding into china and serving the chinese market. It increased US jobs and production in the process.

It was deceptive and Romney got rightfully slammed for it.

        • King Leer

It is expanding when Chrysler does it. When a company such as Bain expands internationally, that is off-shoring. Did I get that right?

        • http://twitter.com/TheAngieNC2 Angie (D)

No, the AD did not say that Jeep was moving American jobs to China. Reading comprehension — how the eff does it work?

Furthermore, Obama went around saying at rallies (and at a debate) that Romney wanted to “liquidate the auto industry” — bet you don’t have a problem with that unbelievable lie or with the fact that you voted for a guy who is so stupid he doesn’t even know that the US Bankruptcy Code provides for several types of bankruptcy only one of which is “liquidation” (Ch. 7).

You’re not just ignorant — you wallow in your ignorance.

So it is technically true that you have sex with your wife when she doesn’t want to (amounting to rape) but that statement is false. See?

So if after a couple of quarters or years, Fiat sees that production costs are lower in China than in the US, what do you think they will do? Expand more production to China until there is no production in the US perhaps? If that happens, will Romney’s statements still be wrong in your opinion?

          • EEKman

Are facts optional in this whack job worldview here?

They added jobs here. Expanded production in the us as well as expanded into china to serve that market as well. Also, personal insults like in your last sentence are never necessary.

  • King Leer

“If you like your plan, you can keep it.”

The lie is and remains that Obama is not a US Citizen and has had people falsify documents claiming to be his Birth Certificate when it was proven by Sheriff Joe Arpio in Arizona that the Document is a fake as produced by the White House and posted on the White Houses own Website thus implicating whomever posted it as part of the Criminal element of the Obama White House not ot mention the lies told about it by Jay Carney.

  • Ned Lemieux

This is so wrong, taken way out of context, and simply not true. You’ve gone and twisted what was said to fit your own models yet again. Yes, Chrysler WILL start production in China, but the THAT market, NOT ours! Jesus, can’t you fucking people EVER get anything right?

  • Dencal26

    Who factchecks the factcheckers?

  • $30158943

There were a good many Romney lies to pick from, but this one was exceptional because he kept it up despite denials from Chrysler and everyone else for that matter. Could well have lost Ohio for him.

  • BeeKaaay

Obama is the lie of the decade, perhaps the century.

  • orringtonmom (D)

next year’s #lieoftheyear “… and will do the best of my ability to preserve, protect and defend the Consitution of the United States.”

  • Seewetoldu

It doesn’t matter to me. I know that the Obama campaign fearlessly lied for 4 years with no reservations at all. Look where it got him. We are dealing with a whole different mentality in this country now. Conservatives better do what they have to to get in office. Being civilized wont get the job done.

Really? So they should what.. Gerrymander their districts and send more reps disproportionately to the amount of people who voted for democrats, obstruct anything and everything that the democrats want, even if it means filibustering their own bills? Negotiate from a position that doesn’t match what the majority of american people voted for? Maybe dismantle government accountability offices like the one in Wisconsin because they aren’t partisan enough in favor of Republicans…or enact impossible to comply with regulations designed to shut down abortion clinics driving it underground and threatening the health of women despite constitutional protections?

Or maybe they should make voting harder by eliminating same day registration or making it has hard as possible to vote, since the lower number of people vote the more it favors republicans. Maybe they should change the electoral college rules to gerrymander the presidential elections just like they do the house?

Maybe they should just continue to act like psychopathic authoritarians just as Ron Paul described?

Maybe they should play to our lowest common denominator and tinfoil hat wearers and shut down treaties based on US law just because the UN would be involved, nevermind that there are no documented cases of the UN ever influencing US law. Maybe they should hold the debt ceiling hostage in case they dont get everything they want and force the US to default on bills congress already agreed to pay sending us to economic calamity and possibly losing our reserve currency status in the world forever because…. OOO Scary numbers, cant comprehend, must be bad…

Maybe they should continue to assert that all positive economic indicators, any negative republican opinion polls or knowable, observable facts are all liberal conspiracies. Maybe the party of personal responsibility should fight to their dying breath to not take any personal responsibility whatsoever.

That should work out great for them in 2014

  • Streetiebird

The election’s over you guys, you can admit Romney was lying through his teeth now…

    • EEKman

Not likely. It threatens their worldview or something. Conservatives tie their political beliefs to their personal identity so if facts prove their beliefs wrong, they still stubbornly cling to them. They cant even agree that evolution or human caused global warming exists for crying out loud.
