Haters gonna hate.

And even some haters may start warming up to Johnson. He pledged to donate his winnings from this weekend’s Dover race to the tornado relief effort in Oklahoma.

  • CatHerder

I don’t know anything about these new guys. The last time I really paid attention to racing, Foyt and Petty were still active.

    • GaryTheBrave

For me it’s Unser on the Indy circuit and F1. Open wheel racing is the best!

      • Andy from Beaverton

I hope some good folks in Montreal post ‘anybody but Vettel’ signs next weekend.

        • John Thomas “Jack” Ward III

          Nah…They like Sebbie, and Jacques and Ron Fellowes.. #F1 #INDYCar #Nascar Jawamax 8<{D}

    • Steve Evans

      And David Pearson.

    • Steve Evans

      And David Pearson.

    • Roto

Then u might remember the “Anybody but Waltrip” signs. Nothin new…

  • Conrad2010

I always thought Johnson as a driver, not as a fan.

  • Chaitealover

Just heard Johnson is donating all his winnings from last week AND this week to Oklahoma tornado victims. Good man.

  • Stone Bryson

While I am a Keslowski fan (and yes, I was one before his championship win last November), I’ve always had much respect for Johnson. 6 cup titles, 100+ wins, and a genuinely nice, generous cat who also has a sense of humor. Can’t really ‘hate’ him… though I must admit I DO get a little tired of his winning all the time. :-)

Edit: Typo on the titles, should have been 5 cup championships. As for the wins… yeah, I screwed up, should be 62.

    • Harry A

*5 cup titles and 62 wins.

      • Stone Bryson

LOL I looked at his Top Five’s when I put in the wins. Yes, Imma goof.

As for the cup titles, that was a simple typo… my post below verifies that, at least.

        • Harry A

well since Jimmie has broken just about all Gordon’s records, I’m still clinging to “most winningest driver of the modern era” lol.

          • Stone Bryson

Ah, a Gordon fan, eh? Jimmie still has a ways to go to reach that mark, thank goodness. And if MY driver, who’s having a crappy year, will finally step up maybe he can help you there, steal a couple wins from ol’ “Five Time.”

            One can hope, eh? :-)

  • mickeyco

I’d be more interested if I knew why anybody hated this guy.

    • Stone Bryson

Think of it this way: If the Dallas Cowboys won five Super Bowls in a row you’d get tired of hearing about that team, unless you are a Dallas fan. That is what race fans went through with Johnson (who won the cup from 2006 through 2010), thus a general feeling of ‘anyone but HIM.”

      • mickeyco

        Gotcha. Thanks, Stone.

        • Roto

Yea, it’s not the same “hate” as liberal hate discussed on Twitchy…. that’s real hate.

  • Clayton Grant

Danica Patrick in a bikini is about the only thing that could get me to watch a bunch of drivers turning left all day. Gran Prix/F1 is another matter.

    • CatHerder

      Yep, that’d do it.

    • Stone Bryson

Ah yeah, the Grand Prix. The Frenchie motor sport where the engines sound like weed-eaters when they go by…

C’mon, man. 😀 (Nice pic of Danica, though)

      • Clayton Grant

Naturally aspirated V8’s of around 2400cc that are limited to 18,000rpm in a package weighing less than 100kg. They may sound funny, but that is some serious, world-class engineering!

        • Stone Bryson

French. Weed-eaters. I rest my case.

          — Actually I enjoy Formula 1, just giving you some jazz for your left-turn remark :-)

          • Guest

            Fair enough!

          • John Thomas “Jack” Ward III

            There;s also:NASCAR K&N Late Model Pro Series, The Whalen Modifieds, The Camping World Truck Series, ARCA Re/Max Series, Indycar (previously mentioned?) SCCA, And one I miss, the HOOTERS’ PROCUP SERIES! #Nascar Jawamax 8<{D}

      • Brian Roastbeef

Ah, Danica Patrick… 4’11” bowlegged proof that photoshop can work for everybody. (h/t Daniel Tosh).

Maybe if Princess Sparkle Pony tries real hard she can pull another 30th place finish this week.

        • Stone Bryson

LOL aw, go easy on Danica. She’s had a couple of decent finishes this year, and her presence in NASCAR does serve a purpose.

No, I don’t like the excessive amount of attention she gets, but think of this way: When Johanna Long becomes the first woman to win a Cup event three or four years from now Danica will become nothing more than a memory.

          • Brian Roastbeef

A top ten at a plate track doesn’t count for much in respectable racing circles, but I’m with you when it comes to Johanna Long. Hopefully there’s still enough sense left in the sport to put her in a ride even half as good as that 10 should be…

          • John Thomas “Jack” Ward III

            And while you’re at it, Don’t forget Jennifer Jo Cobb in the Truck Series. She has been improving little by little, and sticking to the race, finishing the races (even though she’s usually laps down). All she needs is a better engine, and WHAMMO! She’ll show Kyle Busch a thing or two… #Nascar Jawamax 8<{D}

          • Stone Bryson

I’d like to agree with you Jack – she’s a local girl – but she’s already hit 40, which is often the age when drivers start to decline. Not saying it’s impossible (she’s got some talent, no doubt), but I am not sure she’ll ever show Kyle Busch much of anything. Love or hate him, the cat’s got skills.

            Oh, I’ve always wondered – WTF does — Jawamax 8<{D} — mean? Just curious… :-)

I have to give you that, about Daytona and ‘Dega, though you have to admit when a ‘celebrity’ like Danica finishes decent on the big stages it helps the sport with the newer, low-information race fans (exposure = growth). Still, I do understand your thoughts – I get sick of hearing about her every week as well.

Glad we agree on Johanna, though. For being so young, and driving with a low-budget team, and not even running full time… that girl can flat out drive. IF she gets a decent, full-time ride… oh man, she’s gonna surprise the crap out of a lot of people.

          • Brian Roastbeef

Yeah, the hype is always going to happen. Those of us who pay attention will facepalm when DW & co. are shouting about Danica for an entire race and then are surprised that they didn’t expect a guy like Kenseth, Harvick, or Keselowski to find his way up front by the end of it, but it’s the nature of the sport and to be expected. She brings in money even running 28th. Yet watching Danica going 5 laps down in a good ride gets really annoying when one realizes that money could have gone to Ryan Newman, Sam Hornish is a Busch series journeyman, and that Nascar is building a reliable tradition of crapping on AJ Allmendinger.

Until then, as you said, hyping celebrity when the talent isn’t there has a time limit. Remember Shawna Robinson? 10 races of pointless girl-power hype, then she wrecks Jr. at Fontana and is never seen again. Johanna Long meanwhile is for real and only 21… I’d like to hope she’ll get her opportunity, even without being photographed in her underwear. Unfortunately building hype from N’wide and Trucks has been more difficult the past 7-8 years or so with the Buschwackers snagging the wins and headlines down there.

          • Stone Bryson

You F1 fans should at least give the Nascar guys some props when they race the road courses. Every year they race at Watkins Glen and Sonoma. Lots of lefts and rights on those courses. My favorite is turn 11 (a paper clip right turn 180 degrees) at Sonoma.

Come out from under your rock and stop sounding like a lefty. You are always pointing out how Dems just repeat talking points and/or are low information voters. Anyone can repeat an easy slur against NASCAR drivers like “It’s a left hand turn! Hahaha” Takes just a little bit more effort to be educated about the sport.

      • Guest

I’m sensing that the concept of satire is foreign to you. Way to reinforce the stereotype, Elmer!

        • lmfer

Actually, the low information stereotype seems to have found a sore spot with you, pal.

You played right into that one. I was just pointing out the satire.

Hahahaha. Oh to be an elitist F1 fan…..

      • GaryTheBrave

When Danica was in the money at Daytona (she almost won the whole dang thing) some d____bag got in front of her and purposefully slowed down. NASTYCAR drivers can’t stand being beat by a girl!

Danica has taken to turning right at times. But mainly she just waves people around her.

      • Guest

        HA! Nice one!

  • TJ

There comes a time when two people (Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch) always end up almost winning every week that you just have to give up on the underdog who runs no better then 15th every week and go for those two to win all the time.

    • GaryTheBrave

      Only if you’re betting.

  • Chevypowered

Dale JR fan here and though my heart weeps weekend after weekend I have to give it to the 48 boys for kicking @$$. On the plus side at least JR’s owner, owns the 48 so at least we can bask in just a wee bit of glory. :-)

  • Brian Roastbeef

Whoever put up the sign in the photo misspelled “Kyle Busch.”

  • Roto

There have been “Anybody but… Petty/Pearson/Waltrip/Earnhardt/Gordon” signs over the years. As our Attorney General says so eloquently, “Nothing to see here” :-)

    • John Thomas “Jack” Ward III

      ANYONE BUT KYLE OR DENNY! #NASCAR #RightWard Jawamax 8<{D}

      • Brian Roastbeef

Still can’t believe my driver left Ford to go over to that team… and it’s paid off too, at least on the weeks they don’t set him in a ticking time bomb.
I’ve grown to respect Denny, but that other guy has to go… Not right that he’s the only JGR car that manages a top 5 instead of upchucking all over the track.

  • BillP

Jimmie You Da Man!!! We need more like you come forward. We sure can not depend upon our government to do it the right way!!!!

  • John Thomas “Jack” Ward III

    Watching the race right now….The Toyota Zeroes dominated early, but they’re starting to blow up at Dover….Unforch, Kyle Busch STILL LEADING (BOOOOOO!!!!) Will Update… #NASCAR #RightWard Jawamax 8<{D}

Looks like NASCAR had the same sentiment.
