We’d hoped Bob Costas would have decided not to wade into the controversy pool anymore after last year’s halftime anti-gun lecture, but it was not to be.

At halftime of the Washington/Dallas game, Costas took the opportunity to offer his opinion of the name “Redskins”:

On a Sunday night, most NFL fans just want to be left alone to watch football:

Here’s video of Costas describing when a team name is acceptable in combination with a more benign mascot, or something:

Suggestion of the week:

  • NOYB

He won’t stop until he ruins the Olympics too.

    • Peyton

I hate his coverage of anything.

    • LegalizeShemp

Remember the last Olympics? Costas was over there saying, “despite our foreign policy (Bush’s), they still seem very nice to us over here”. What a putz this midget moron is.

      • Zefal

During the Greece Olympics in 2004 a year after Iraq war the US team received the largest applause of all the teams during the opening ceremonies. He claimed they received applause in spite of their view of the US because the Greeks were swell people. EVEN THOUGH THE US TEAM RECEIVED THE LOUDEST APPLAUSE! No booing. No lukewarm reception. THE LOUDEST!

I don’t know what caused the loudest response, maybe a lot of US citizens were there, but to infer that it was in spite of US policy was just imposing his little ideological beliefs on it.

Apparently bob knows what opinions are held by and what motivates mass crowds.

I always liked watching Later with bob costas but the smugness oozed from the guy. You’d think that would recede with age but in some it actually expands.

And then maybe he’ll go after the Special Olympics, too … he just might consider that exploitation of the disabled.

I rarely have the volume up during sports anymore. The announcers aren’t really telling me anything I can’t see for myself and I am spared their intolerable preaching.

Hear, hear. The only time I turn the volume back up is to find out about a penalty or some other thing. The announcers are so pre programmed with every stupid sports term and obvious observation they make themselves unlistenable.

      • Spiny Norman

On the other hand, people have been bringing radios with them to Dodger Stadium for more than 40 years (i-Pods and Smartphones now) to listen to Vin Scully call the game – while they’re in the stands.

    • MarkIra613

That was evoked more than 20 years ago.

At one protest leading up to the 1992 Super Bowl (If any of you believe Costas invented this controversy, you’re as clueless as some of you insist Costas is!) Native Americans handed the fans redskin potatoes as they entered a Redskins game.

They served up the suggestion that if the team will not change their name altogether, then they should at least change their mascot to the potato.

      • JeffWRidge

When did I write that Costas invented this controversy? If you think that I wrote, or suggested, that, you need to improve your reading comprehension.

        • MarkIra613

You shouldn’t lecture others about reading comprehension while you reveal that the word “IF” is beyond your intellectual purview.

          • JeffWRidge

Why even bring it up in a comment addressed to me? I didn’t say it, so leave me out of it. Is that so hard for you to understand?

If someone has made such a comment then post a reply to them explaining it, not to someone who did not mention it. Or is that beyond your limited capacity to figure out?

Costas commentated on WWF events in the 80’s.

A sport that had at the time mad Russians, evil Iraqis, sinister japanese throwing salt, an Italian playing an Indian doing a mock war dance, polish wrestlers that were “simple” and more.

But I guess the checks cleared, so he didn’t complain

    • Mehow

The only reason the issue has “come to a head” is that the Post since January of THIS year has artificially trolled the public with literally a ZILLION articles about changing the evil name.

What then happens is the activist left takes it up, and then Slate bandwagons along with Mother Jones.

People who never cared before suddenly think it’s more important than landing a man on the moon.

What it is is a liberal lynch mob, pure and simple, of an innocent party, the team, Snyder and their fans.

So now, we are at the point where the ignorant hysterical PC mob gets a Democrat lawmaker to introduce legislation to ban the name outright and Peter King refuses to use a perfectly benign name, etc.

The idea is to impugn the name and to make it unacceptable in polite company.

The irony is the folks demanding the change, claiming it’s “racist” are making it a forced self fulfilling prophesy via their accusations and crusading, a result not natural or spontaneous, but calculated.

I do not think I have ever been more ashamed to be an American than now over all of this.

We have folks who are not football fans in many instances, who do not know the factual history of the team or the origin of the word redskin attempting to act as PC overlords for all of us, including the legions of NA schools that choose and like the term redskins for their squads where no white man ever demanded it, and they see only some insane and convoluted “skin color” connotation because that is what they WANT to see.

It’s just beyond belief this is happening in America, and the free speech rapists think it’s progress…

Great, ol’ Bob acCostingus again. I read that the Wisconsin legislature is proposing a law that requires more than one person to complain and puts the burden of proof on those who oppose and want to change a name. It basically reverses a law passed by the WI-prog-Dembeciles that allows protest filings but instead of the complainers having to prove how the name discriminates, it requires proof from the defenders how it doesn’t discriminate–typical libturd idiocy.

Why do these people pull issues out of their collective *sses? Maybe I’ve been living under a rock but I’ve never heard a controversy over the Redskins name until some black or white or black/white person started it recently. Feel free to correct me if I happened to be reading the Onion or National Enquirer.

    • Mehow

Probably since the left always uses the same tactical sequence.

      1) claim something is racist or sexist or homophobic, etc.
      2) Boycott with a shaming arm component, i.e. refuse to utter the name and such tricks.
      3) Sue or menace such, like trademark refusal, etc.
      3) Try to pass policies or laws punishing the obstinate offender-see the Dem congresswoman’s name ban and the high school plan to ban it making headlines.
      4) Claim anyone supporting it still (even if they are right and not racialists) are racist FOR doing so.
      5) Claim “change is inevitable” and keep molesting the team with a blitz until it caves
      6) Claim they are on the right side of history.
      7) Rinse, wash, repeat.

      • Mehow

Because it becomes self fulfilling prophesy.

The very stink over this, even ignorantly, has further tainted a name that was not inherently bad, but now more and more NEW dictionaries will note “meant as a pejorative” when that SHOULD not be considered accurate. A fine study in human behavior, not slurs, but in herd animal behavior.

The left is trying to MAKE this by force, into a term that people associate with a pejorative, via brainwashing. They seek to “[email protected]” it, as can be seen when tools here claim the word Redskin is like the “N” word (false but they want to force it to become that) and call it the “R: word and say those supporting it are defined as racists, etc.

In other words, a self fulfilling prophesy of PC group think.

Which is why I argue most “conservatives” do not really get how big the stakes in this affair are in time.

Set aside your view of the name. Let’s pretend the name WAS the equivalent of the N word. It’s not, but pretend it even was.

You are in idiot if you do not see how serious this thing is, because what is on the line here is FREE SPEECH (no, this is NOT a crowded theater on fire exception) under the Constitution.

Even the Neo-Nazi’s have a right to march on Skokie.

You do not pitch those to preserve the right (which is non-existent) of SOME small group of malcontents to NOT be offended.

As Penn Jilette quipped, you have a right to be offended, but you do NOT have a right to NOT be offended.

Morality is irrelevant here in the big picture, which liberals do not respect or understand the long range consequences and implications of.

Further, businesses MUST not lose autonomy in operation of decisions like this, or our freedom dies. They cannot be lynched or trademark raped and have that be compatible with healthy society.

These concerns trump the possibility of SOME persons being offended, who can simply choose not to buy tickets or apparel by light years.

It’s a battle that conservatives cannot afford to lose to the left…

All I can say is Thank GOD for white guys like Bob Costas that are bold enough to decide what things offend Native Americans.

Give Me A Break. BC, go back to what ever else you did, before you got into sports broadcasting, You and Oblabermouth have ruined sports broadcasting. Were are the real broadcasters, not the Midget Mouth liberal Progressives of NBC.

Gotta love “concerned” white liberals… Newsflash, nobody gives a sh*t, including a majority of native americans!

Shouldn’t this protest originate from the offended group? Keep going, Bob, look what wading into politics did for Olbermann’s career.

  • Kaya Hund

Costas is Rumpelstiltskin through and through. First, he’s a dwarf. Second, he’s destroying himself now over the Redskins’ name.

    • Kaya Hund

Ha! Costas may also be Rip Van Winkle, since apparently, he just woke up.

  • therealguyfaux ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Greek-and-Irish-American Bob Costas apparently has no problem with “Spartans,” “Trojans,” or “Fightin’ Irish.” He would have mentioned it, if he had. Say, Bob– go back to Astoria (NYC Greektown) and ask anybody there if they’re offended by Michigan State or SoCal. You have to be thorough about this– just because 99% of Greeks probably don’t give a crap, assuming they even watch American Football at all, doesn’t mean there might not be ONE– and even if one person is offended, well, that should be grounds for changing those names, right?

  • Axelgreaser

SAD WHEN MENTAL ILLNESS STRIKES THOSE WHO HAVE A BULLY PULPIT…and then the masses are forced to listen to their ravings in trade for viewing a sporting event. This man is just……nutz! Native American Indians, if you’ve ever met one, are beautiful people. Their ‘red’ skin, since we’re so obsessed with skin color, is truly beautiful. What in hell is wrong with celebrating it in this manner? Would ‘pasty white’ (per Costas’s skin hue) make him happier? Costas has been running his liberal mouth for years but the last several have been abominable. STFU and go away. Has anyone else come to the conclusion there just isn’t enough time in a day for bleeding heart liberals to kiss your a$$?

“Bully pulpit,” or “pulpit bully”? Preachiness of the Costas variety tells me to be on guard against ever letting anyone like him take power– you know it will all end in tragedy, when it all comes down to it– “Do it– or else…”

Another instance of the bully PC crowd going after an American institution–an American tradition. Dan Snyder has every right to keep his team name. An part of our heritage and culture–to say nothing of it’s place in the history of the NFL. Bob Costage is a headline seeking baffoon, a characterture of himself. If over 90% of the American people are okay with it, if the far greater majority of the Native Americans don’t have a problem with it, who is he to say it’s a ‘slur,’ an insult. These PC folks need to get a life. The same ones who are forcing school districts to now allow Halloween parties, who are changing the name Easter Vacation to ‘spring break,’ who want Christmas trees to be referred to as ‘holiday trees’ and who want “In God We Trust” taken off our currency. Why should we take a step back? The majority of Native Americans know that it is only a team nickname. With the noble looking Native American logo, it seems to show admiration for Native Americans, and raises what MIGHT otherwise be a racial slur, to a compliment since it is identifying with bravery, determination, and a spirit to win. No one names their team after a group of wimps. Costas, stick to sportscasting, please, and keep your editorial comments to yourself. If you want to express them, do it as a private citizen. It’s this type of “looking for something to be insulted about” that divides people more that the so-called “slur” of a team’s nickname.

Costas is an arrogant, condescending fool – but he’s merely a diminutive (sorry, Bob…oh wait…no I’m not) reflection of NBC itself.

The things I find offensive is liberals finding ridiculous ways to pull victims out of thin air, hypocritically acting morally superior and pushing their white-guilt agenda. But I don’t get a bully pulpit to lecture liberals, so shut up, call the game and sit down. Nobody gives a fat rats azz what you think.

  • Julescat

nice dye job on the hair Costas. just trying to keep it real. right?

  • Stephen Schroeder

Once we starting changing the names of an NFL team because it offends less than .01% of the population, we should just gid rid of ALL names and just refer to all teams with their geographical locations only. (That would be a problem with the Giants and Jets though). If we REALLY wanted get down to it, we could find offense to every name. Patriots – Can be associated with the Tea Party and we know how the Republicans and Democrats hate htem. Dolphins – Tuna meat. Any team with an animal, Did we clear those names with PETA? Did anyone take the time to ask the animal kingdon if there was any offense? Raiders, a group outlaws that pillage villages and raped and killed. Anyone think that someone could be hurt because their great ancestors could have been killed in those raids. Buccaneers could also be wraped in there also. Giants – what about the little people in the world? Maybe they have offense that there is no team called the “Tinyies”. Cowboys – Not gender neutral. Browns – Brown Skin people? Saints, Could you really really call them the saints after Bounty Gate? Titans, refer to a group of Greek gods and goddesses, this might be offensive to Christians, but then noone cares about the Christian’s anymore BUT it would be offensive to the Muslims because you are refering to something other then Allah. If the Muslims are offended, we will be required to change the name. 49ers refer to the great greed of the gold rush in 1849. This greed caused a spike in murders and prostiution in the United States. Steelers refered to the Steel industry in Pittsburgh, which also was the birth place of the Unions. Most people hate the unions. Vikings did first what people people like blaming Christopher Columbus for doing, taking over land in North America from the Native Americans. Texans, not inclusive enough. Jets, I really could not find away to be offended by their name, but I am generally offended that they are allowed i nthe NFL because the JETS JETS JETS SUCK SUCK SUCK!

More sadly, and instructive as to HOW the RIGHT keeps losing cultural battles of critical importance, is that the right and conservatives do not take stuff like this seriously IN TIME to stop IT.

    So we lose.

And liberty dies ever more and people on this site say BS like “this is not a big fish” and “we have other things like the debt ceiling to deal with and this another Obama distraction” and then they make light of it and make word plays on the Redskins name to make fun of all of it.

You guys need to wake up and smell the Folgers.

If a private business like this and Snyder can be FORCED literally by PC police Nazis to do this, the country is GONE. Next up will be other teams the Devil originally said were “not as bad as the obviously racist skins” and then more demands for control over business factors. Slowly but inexorably, and this is a high profile case, liberals are banning free speech (which is another thing this case is all about) and heading us to speech codes. For now, those will be unspoken PC, but later they might even push for LAWS.

    I am not exaggerating here.

Not one bit. This is one of the most important fights not to lose in generations. A turning point with the usual shaming and calling it racist to silence supporters of the name has begun. The left has a many month lead (as usual) in the ground war on this, where they have got Peter King to refuse to use the word, to “[email protected]” it.

They want to re-write history, get ESPN or some such high profile outfit to follow their lead, and force the team to change the name, but a lot more for Conservatives is on the line here if that occurs.

I suggest you all become warriors for the cause and help out by writing letters to editors in support of the name, and on the Washington Post boards for their articles, since they began this war on the team in January over an 80 year old nickname, they post DAILY articles with fascist liberal sports writers who are badmouthing the name. This was and is a totally artificial hit piece blitz to force a private business to lose millions and rape the culture and throw out free speech.

Stop what you are doing, and help the Redskins!

  • MarkIra613

Even if you believe every other Bob Costas commentary was erroneous, self-righeous or not germane to the sporting event he was covering, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn now and then.

So it is with his comments about the name “Redskins,” which were nuanced, balanced and 100% correct.

Like it or not, the name IS vulgar. Even though I haven’t a drop of Native American blood in my veins, the name now makes me cringe.

But for those of you who see nothing wrong with it, you have an ally on the radio in Cleveland. (See http://open.salon.com/blog/mark_ira_kaufman/2013/10/14/football_is_a_game_defending_racist_stereotypes_is_not)
