Conservatives urge GOP to walk away from Obama's fiscal cliff offer

As the fiscal cliff looms ever closer on the horizon, the White House at last has laid its opening bid on the table, much to the amusement of Sen. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. Something about that additional $50 billion in “stimulus” spending to reduce the deficit just tickles the funny bone.

Though House Republicans now will have to present their own proposal, many conservatives aren’t confident in the negotiating skills of House Speaker John Boehner, with some on Twitter (unsuccessfully) lobbying to replace him. Frankly, it’s not difficult to picture fiscal cliff negotiations looking something like “Thelma and Louise,” with President Obama and Boehner clutching hands before stomping on the accelerator. Maybe they’ll get lucky and land on a pile of worthless dollar bills. Is this the issue where the GOP will find its backbone?

But is there an alternative? Many high-profile conservatives, including Charles Krauthammer and Rush Limbaugh, are suggesting that the GOP simply hand Obama the keys and let him drive off the cliff by himself. The fiscal cliff? He did build that; let him own it.

What will it be? It’s going to be a bumpy ride regardless. Will the GOP buckle, or buckle up?
