The video from the most recent No Kings event in Boise shows a small stage draped in a rainbow banner with a hand-drawn crown crossed out in red, microphones lined up for a group of people belting out protest songs, and a couple of inflatable costumes — a dinosaur and a frog — wandering the grass nearby.
THIS IS DEMOCRACY, Y'ALL.
Signs about voting and resisting sit next to the speakers, and the whole thing has the feel of a really lame community theater production that somehow got outdoors.

It is the sort of scene that has become familiar at these events: earnest chants, colorful props, and a crowd that appears mostly content to perform the idea of resistance rather than confront any particular policy. What stands out is the gap between the presentation and the claim. Democracy in practice usually involves voters showing up, candidates competing, and results being accepted even when they disappoint.
This version looks more like a park gathering where the main activity is singing at each other under a banner that treats a constitutional republic as a monarchy in need of overthrow. Oh, and a version that is all leftist white women and Boomer lefties convinced they're still protesting for THE PEOPLE.
Woof.
If this is the face of democracy being offered, it is one I'll pass, just like the founding fathers did.
