Amid Jim Acosta’s latest round of amplifying dramatic anonymous-mom texts about the USS Tripoli and calls for Pete Hegseth to step down, the pushback highlights how quickly concerned parents can be turned into useful props for a media narrative that treats civilian relatives like an alternative Joint Chiefs of Staff. Legitimate problems deserve investigation and fixes — no one disputes that — but treating deployment hardships as a family-led mutiny against the Defense Secretary is peak performative overreach.

Which is why amplifying increasingly dramatic messages from family members as though they represent some authoritative indictment of military leadership feels a whole lot more like narrative-building than journalism. He doesn’t give a shit about these sailors. They’re useful to the story he wants to tell.
If there are legitimate problems, investigate them and fix them. But military families declaring “war” on military leadership through Jim Acosta is not how any of this works.
