D.C. Councilmember Marion Barry is a longtime advocate of freeing the nation’s capital from “political slavery.”
Tweet if YOU believe in FREEDOM & ONE MAN/WOMAN ONE VOTE! How long are we gonna celebrate other people's freedom and not our own? #FREEDC!
— Remembering Barry (@marionbarryjr) July 4, 2012
So on Independence Day, instead of using his Twitter account to share images of “dirty” Asian businesses, Barry attempted to rally his followers to the “Free D.C.” cause … by telling them to put their “#$%!” hot dogs down.
Are we as apathatic as they say we are? Let me HEAR YOU if you believe in freedom 4 DC! Put the #$%! hot dog down & tweet 4 freedom in DC!

“Put the #$%! hot dog down” — the phrase that launched a revolution?
Have we grown to accept that we deserve less rights than other Americans? Tweet if YOU believe in FREEDOM for DC! #FREEDC!

— Remembering Barry (@marionbarryjr) July 4, 2012
Oh, and you know who’d have the (former?) crack-smoking, bitch-set-me-up councilman’s back while he topples that “paternalistic” crown? Frederick Douglass, natch.
"Are the great principles of political freedom..embodied in that Declaration of Independence extended to us?" Fred Douglass NO! #FREEDC!

Er, sorry, Fred Douglass.
Fred. Like they were homies. RT @marionbarryjr: "This Fourth July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn." Fred Douglass #FREEDC!

He continued:
"I say it with a sad sense of the disparity between us. I am not included within the pale of glorious anniversary!" Fred Douglass #FREEDC!

F. Douglass ends his inquiry into the meaning of the 4th of July w/Wm Lloyd Garrison, "Whate'er the peril or the cost,Be driven!" #FREEDC!

We’re wondering how the abolitionist leader would feel about having his words hijacked by a man who wanted to rid the country of the Filipino nurse menace.
I can't help thinking that if @marionbarryjr hadn't made DC a national joke, we'd be further along in our push for basic representation.
