As we told you earlier, students at Stoneman Douglas HS in Parkland, FL were fighting over whether or not Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos’ visit to the school today was a good idea.
In short, the visit did not go well, at least according to the reaction on social media:
Parkland students shred DeVos over her visit: She refused to even talk to us https://t.co/gwCYkXhl96 pic.twitter.com/BwR4ZGbXmz
— The Hill (@thehill) March 7, 2018
According to reports, DeVos only spoke to a handful of students during her visit, which seems like an unforced error:
Betsy Devos came to my school, talked to three people, and pet a dog. This is incase the press tries to say something else later

Secretary of education Betsy Devos spoke to me and only a hand full of students. She did not properly answer my only question. She did not sit down with any students and asked what we wanted. Douglas has 3,000 students. None of them were invited. pic.twitter.com/1RXYDZJtTb

Conservative student Kyle Kashuv, however, criticized students for walking out on DeVos:
Wow. You walked out. Bravery at its finest. Disrespectful isn't even the word https://t.co/BUkD6lNX1F

But in the vacuum left by DeVos not speaking to the students at large, in stepped Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade who did make time to meet with students:

I just had a great conversation with some of the students at Stoneman Douglas High School about some important/impactful things that they have planned. I’m looking forward to being more involved in the change that they WILL create. #MSDStrong ??????

Our conversation about bridging the gap between the students from Parkland, Florida and Chicago was really impressive. These young adults GET IT. They understand the power of their voices for the ones that often go unheard!

This isn’t a good look for DeVos:
“Dwyane Wade had a longer, more personable conversation with us than the Secretary of Education,” one Stoneman Douglas student said. https://t.co/s66OnRQKMO

Wade dedicated his season to the school after learning that one of the students killed on February 14 was buried in his jersey:
Dwyane Wade is scheduled to meet privately tonight with the parents of Joaquin Oliver, the former Douglas High student who was buried in Wade's jersey
