Even though the U.S. economy continues to rebound (in spite of the hopes of many Democrats wishing to see Trump lose next year), many Americans do face tough economic choices, and Vox’s Matt Yglesias thinks the government should step in to “discourage” spending in a particular area:
The government should try to do something to discourage expensive weddings (and wedding related activities) which seem to cause a lot of stress in people’s finances and interpersonal relationships & probably discouraged people from getting married.

We’d be way better off with a norm of cheaper weddings and the money repurposed for family vacations down the road.

Hey, who better to help keep Americans’ personal finances on track than the entity that’s some $22 trillion in debt?
So Socialized weddings?

Sounds like an absolute blast! *Eye roll*
Why does the government need to get involved with this at all? https://t.co/QUC7uLknIt

There’s already a well-established wedding industrial complex. Let’s not get government involved in it. https://t.co/Syuv5IbeZG

“Wedding control NOW!”
Can we stop this idiocy of thinking the gov’t should DO SOMETHING for every single thing? You’re supposed to be a journalist maybe write something and then start a conversation about this instead of naval gazing about how the gov’t should DO SOMETHING. https://t.co/CAlb905OjW

Here's a thought: the government shouldn't try to run every aspect of my life. Are you not adult enough to handle this on your own?

Don’t family vacations harm the environment? https://t.co/oxHJogULuy

Oh, he’ll no doubt want the government in charge of that part of our lives too! Also, Yglesias says conservatives who are against government regulation of weddings aren’t being very conservative:
The number of conservatives yelling to me on Twitter that the government should mind its own business and not care about marriage or family life is really remarkable, though I guess fitting for the fallen Trump-era version of the movement. https://t.co/J34BQuew62

Um, OK.
“Conservatives are hypocrites for saying government shouldn’t dictate how much of money people spend on weddings” https://t.co/l59uMuRR6e

Wow. So his marriage regulation WASN'T satire. And he thinks anyone who disagrees is a "conservative." Name one freaking member of Congress or a state legislature, @mattyglesias, who's more capable at running your life than you. https://t.co/FkOIhZwge3

I think there’s a pretty clear difference between caring about marriage/family life and using public policy to dictate how much a couple can spend on a rehearsal dinner.
