Here's how the news is made. The wife of a sailor who attempted to jump overboard from the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln either posted about it online or emailed her story to a reporter at The Military Times, which is not affiliated with the U.S. military. The Military Times reporter writes up the anecdote and publishes it, and suddenly there's a media frenzy suggesting that hordes of sailors are trying to commit suicide by jumping overboard because their deployment was scheduled to end in May. CNN's Kaitlan Collins picks up the story and interviews the wife over Zoom. People post photos of the meager meals on the aircraft carrier, which even Snopes steps in to debunk: aircraft carriers don't have cinderblock walls. A TikTok video of grimy showers, stained floors, and filthy toilets alleged aboard the Abraham Lincoln goes viral, except more discerning viewers note that the sailor is wearing a construction helmet, meaning this ship is not currently deployed.
Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao posted a lengthy statement to X saying that "unfortunately, the media are trying to paint our warriors as victims. Not only is that dishonest, but it takes away the focus on the enemy and the threat it poses against our nation, people, and way of life."
CNN is now on top of the poor conditions in the Navy that are leading to "multiple" sailors trying to jump overboard. CNN reports on Monday that, last month, a U.S. Navy destroyer in the South China Sea spent four days without power.

"The incident was due to an engineering failure aboard the warship, the US 7th Fleet said in a statement to CNN, another setback as concerns mount over the heavy strain on the US Navy due to the Iran war and global commitments," reports Brad Lendon.
What is your point CNN

They're doing their part to keep this new narrative alive. Suddenly, they care about the heavy strain of being a sailor.
Good grief are you going to report on every maintenance issue that the Navy encounters?

Believe it or not, many soldiers have faced much worse conditions. Like storming the beaches of Normandy only to face certain death. Don't start your grievance communist propaganda on our military. They are not your tools. Shameful.

In 1988, I was given a tour of a US frigate, the USS Ouelett (FF-1077), at Pearl Harbor. The EO explained that the only area of the ship that was air conditioned was the Combat Information Center (CIC) protecting critical electronics.

I thought CNN was all for the European model of no AC. Just not for 4 days on US warships? Yeah, the difference is obvious once you see it.

No A/C, oh the horror! You people have no idea what being in the military demands at times. No surprise. But disgusting that you’re trying to gain political points over it.

You had a problem with the steak and lobster a few weeks ago though. Still not sure why @CNN is circling the drain, amirite?

So, CNN is more interested in highlighting the bad without ever talking about the incredible service of the men and women on this ship. Liberal media only wants to facilitate Democrat power.

Cruise liners never have those issues huh? CNN takes a mechanical issue and blows it up to be catastrophic event and political affiliation game changer. That is one MSM I'd love to see be shut down

This would be a problem if all of our ships were like this and stayed like this, but they fixed it within a couple of days and now it’s fine?
— Phil (@Piano_Trumpet) August 17, 2026
This was widely reported last month, and now CNN reports it again like they got a huge scoop.

Again, CNN was handed a narrative by The Military Times and has decided to keep it alive as long as possible. President Trump and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth have let the Navy deteriorate to the point where sailors are jumping overboard. Anything to reduce morale both among the troops and the American public.
