Hey everybody, Michelle Obama has a new book coming out called “The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times.” The Biden administration certainly does qualify as uncertain times, as in, I’m uncertain how I’m going to afford groceries and gas. Obama is here to help, though, with a self-help book. She has some advice for all of us drawn from her own experiences.
Judith Newman kicks off her review with this: “It’s not easy being Michelle Obama. Fabulous, yes. Easy, no.” NPR on Monday noted a passage where Obama says six years after Donald Trump’s White House win, his victory “still hurts.” Newman continues:
After “Becoming” became one of the best-selling memoirs of all time, Obama wanted to think about what we all need to get through turbulent times. And indisputably it has been a time where public and private are deeply intertwined. The loss of millions during the pandemic (including more than a million Americans); the corrosive and cumulative effect of George Floyd’s murder; the Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6; and, more generally, the explosion of divisiveness during the Trump administration. (You think it was painful for you to see a reckless crew in the White House? Try being the Obamas, knowing as you toss them the keys that so much of what you had worked for was about to be shredded like a cheap dog toy.)
Each chapter is a tool, as Obama puts it, to help keep yourself together.
Thank you, Michelle.
The most sycophantic book review ever written.
"She is on a journey. Through her stories, experiences and thoughts, we’re finding the light with her. Lucky us."

"[S]he reveals herself, subtly and endearingly, in a dozen different ways. The fact that she loves 'lowbrow TV' and counts the hilarious but racy Ali Wong among her favorite comedians says the world about who Obama is when she gets together with those friends. Lucky them."

All the book is is how she's inspired by letters people sent her who were inspired by…her first book.

The most bitter First Lady in modern history, next to Hillary Clinton.

Hillary Clinton grew bitter … Michelle Obama entered the White House bitter and stayed that way.
We’ll be curious to see if other mainstream reviewers enjoy the book as well, after featuring her on their covers for eight years. Guaranteed the audiobook gets a Grammy nomination like Barry’s did.
