As Twitchy reported earlier, Sen. Chuck Schumer and other Democrats in town for the SOMOS conference in Puerto Rico were caught violating Puerto Rico’s indoor mask mandate, which requires that masks be worn in all indoor spaces, regardless of vaccination status. Another tweeter caught AFT president Randi Weingarten and other school leaders also violating the mask mandate.
Gotta love when school leaders @rweingarten @DOEChancellor mingle with others..in a packed room…with no masks..yet…I wonder if everyone needed proof of Vax to attend this 'work vaca'…they sure didn't need masks…@AppletoZucchini @daniela127 @Chalkbeat pic.twitter.com/Tjr4dQsiu1

The SOMOS conference website alerted attendees to the mask requirement.
You could not be #Somos or the hotel or panel w/o proof of vaccination. I had also just done a rapid Covid test & was negative.Frankly I think you are right. If kids are wearing masks in schools to protect themselves & others educators must wear masks inside as well. I’m sorry.
— Randi Weingarten (@rweingarten) November 6, 2021
We’ve finally found something Weingarten will admit she’s sorry for.
But you enjoyed not having to wear a mask, right? While students in the city you live in – many of whom are vaccinated – have to wear their masks for 6+ hrs every day, even outdoors, while they're in school. If you claim to be pro-student, as you claim, it's time to take a stand.

I wear a mask most of the time indoors. We took them off as people were having a hard time hearing us
— Randi Weingarten (@rweingarten) November 6, 2021

That must explain why President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and others wear masks outside and then remove them when approaching people to talk to them. “People were having a hard time hearing us.”
Children need to hear their teachers. https://t.co/EYEuhvTHy4

And teachers need to hear their students. ❤️ https://t.co/wmiFPTSu9S

Have you considered how hard it is for teachers and students to hear each other in the classroom?
— NYC_TeacherMom (@NYC_TeacherMom) November 6, 2021
The same applies in schools. Hard for kids to hear the teacher & each other.
— Jennifer Sey (@JenniferSey) November 6, 2021
Do you think my five year old’s teacher can hear and understand him?
— Sarah Beth Burwick (@sarahbeth345) November 6, 2021
Have you ever been in a preschool classroom? Tried to teach them letter sounds and hear them or try to teach them emotions-happy, sad, etc? I can’t hear them or see them either, but are we able to take off our masks? That’s a big fat no. Do better.

When you say the quiet part out loud. Masking kids is insane and you know it. Power is quite the drug.
— Mad Scientist (@Angry_PhD) November 6, 2021
Please take a step back and look at what you just said and now imagine living life for 7 plus hours every single day in a classroom as a child, during their formative years.
— NYC Angry Mom (@angrybklynmom) November 6, 2021
I really think Randi doesn’t see how the rest of us view this. Her replies seem to contain some genuine shock to me. She should try eating lunch silently on the concrete in the rain—the only time of day she’s allowed to take her mask off (unless in her own household).
— Corie Whalen (@CorieWhalen) November 6, 2021
Some schools require kids to eat lunch outside, even if it’s raining, because of mask mandates. Just bring a change of clothes.
I would be furious if I weren't so utterly heartbroken for so many kids sitting in school for hours a day with no choice to remove their mask even for one minute without permission from a selfish adult who cannot see how this is harming our kids.

Yes! Now imagine how my learning disabled student feels
— Sisi😊 (@MissSisi7763) November 6, 2021
@rweingarten , children with disabilities face the same thing.
And it's hard for a student w/#autism or #adhd to attend to a faceless voice. How about a stepping up to do what's right by kids?
Support the end of mandates
— OregonMammaBear (@unheardparent) November 6, 2021
Oh good, so when my kids with speech impediments can’t ever be understood in masks by their teachers, it makes sense for them to take their masks off.
— Dennis Bakke (@dwbakke) November 6, 2021
The long term effects of masking kids will soon be seen. Speech problems, social problems, and anxiety. And guess what, they are still getting colds.
— Mo (@MartitaO) November 6, 2021
I’m here for the ratio on this one. Gonna be brutal.
— Tracy Compton (@kellytra) November 6, 2021
Now that you’ve experienced the tiniest bit of what it is like to be a teacher or child in the United States, will you advocate for the end of mandatory masks? Will you call the @CDCDirector again, but this time tell her how masks keep students from hearing and being heard?
— Mandy (@mandylorianM) November 6, 2021
Wait, what? Either you a masker or you aren’t. Speaking shouldn’t be an excuse to remove both of them if you believe they are that important…
— Brian thinking critically 🐊 (@BriCritically) November 6, 2021
Now, how do you think it affects children?
— Bonchie (@bonchieredstate) November 6, 2021
My children and their teachers have a hard time hearing each other. They get to stop wearing masks now, right? Right?
— Lindsay (@themrsLindsayB) November 6, 2021
Btw, i don’t like masks either.. it was a big room- larger than a classroom, and the audio system was bad.. But you have a real point.. it is why I said you are right.. I wore my mask the rest of the conference
— Randi Weingarten (@rweingarten) November 6, 2021
“The audio system was bad.”
