The Illinois Times issued a clarification Monday afternoon making it clear that cartoonist Chris Britt is a freelancer and not an employee of the newspaper. Here’s how the paper’s statement appeared on Facebook:
Clarification regarding the Judge Kavanaugh cartoon by Chris Britt:
While Chris Britt is a regular contributor to Illinois Times, he is not an employee and also engages in work for other publications across the country. The recent cartoon involving Kavanaugh’s daughter was posted on Chris’ own Facebook page; it did not appear in our publication or on our website The Illinois Times name should not have appeared on the cartoon in question and we have asked Chris Britt to remove it.
What was that? A cartoon involving Brett Kavanaugh’s 10-year-old daughter? The one who said, “We should pray for the lady”?
We can’t imagine how anyone could find this offensive.
To Whom it May Concern at .@ILTimes:
I would like to formally lodge a protest at the disgraceful sketch by your cartoonist, Chris Britt, depicting the 10 year-old daughter of Judge Brett Kavanaugh.
It contravenes every standard of decency in our society. Please remove it. pic.twitter.com/WWpI2f9NVA

That’s … so low. Low enough that Sen. Dianne Feinstein probably had it tacked up on her office wall.
I worked with Chris Britt at the Seattle Times in the mid-1990s. He was a genuinely nice guy.
I don't know what happened to him.
Damn. https://t.co/FnnINYw1pU

Yeah, he’s not a nice guy anymore. He probably thinks he is. He’s not. Even the Seattle Times, which Michelle Malkin mentioned, wants to clarify he doesn’t work there either.
To clarify: Chris Britt doesn't currently work at The Seattle Times, and @SeaTimesOpinion didn't publish this cartoon in our paper or on our website.

When you think the absolute bottom of the cheap comments has been hit, Chris Britt goes deeper.

This wrong on so many levels

@ILTimes It's in our media, but since the artist is a freelancer we cant be blamed, of course, we have no power over what freelancers wish to put in our publication… https://t.co/W8b2N5QJM0

This makes me REALLY ANGRY! Don't you folks have EDITORS, @ILTimes ?! https://t.co/g5PAJrLSjq
— McLiberTea (@McLiberTea) October 1, 2018
I see.
He just snuck that little gem in when nobody was looking, eh? https://t.co/aRuBHpgIUc— Sheik Yerbouti (@YerboutiSheik) October 1, 2018
Your paper is repugnant. You are sick. Your editor should be looking into a mirror and asking how you have come to this.
— Gator Chet (@gatorchet) October 1, 2018
So what? YOU published that garbage.
— ™ (@corrcomm) October 1, 2018
Nice cop out. If you think that makes your publication any better or Mr. Britt's work any more tolerable, you and Mr. Britt are the one in need of prayers.
— Mark Davis (@MDDavis9) October 1, 2018
So since he doesn't really work for you but you still ran the cartoon how about REFUNDING everyone that got a newspaper with that cartoon. Now that would be a REAL apology. Otherwise thanks for proving why no one trusts the news anymore.

That is the most disgusting, politically driven and cowardly abuse of a child I have ever seen. That coward Britt and the publisher of the Illinois Times should be investigated. To come up with that level of trash requires a dark past.

Yes, and? https://t.co/Q89juTiA1I
— BayAreaFrau (@bayareahausfrau) October 1, 2018
You published the cartoon. You had a choice. You gave this vile pig of a person a platform to attack children. Good luck in life you scum bags. @ILTimes https://t.co/vPnQ0bPvSC
— WasAToonie (@02129toonie) October 1, 2018
You paid him. You ran the obscene, insulting, bigoted cartoon. You knew what you were doing. You own it. No amount of trying to shift blame or excuses will succeed in changing your responsibility. https://t.co/fkJcBGFKkf
— Matt Graver (@MattGraver2) October 1, 2018
You own the responsibility of helping to exploit Kavanaugh's daughters.. https://t.co/pp50AHFHbe
— Ted (@Tedgforce) October 1, 2018
Chris Britt put the Illinois Times name with his signature on the cartoon. They own it
This weasel excuse for them using a depiction of a 10 year old child as part of their ritual defamation of Judge Kavanaugh fools no one. https://t.co/JGpJk1HIea
— Angie ♕ (@TheAngieNC2) October 1, 2018
Doesn’t matter. You are at least one of the peckerwoods who gave this living, breathing, drawing piece of solid waste a platform to showcase his depravity. Accept your culpability and quit rationalizing. https://t.co/2hKygC6DTu
— Brian Edmunds (@BrianEdmunds1) October 1, 2018
Clarification. Publishing that cartoon is beyond slime. Being complicit in accusing a good man of pedophilia is pathetic. I hope you get sued. https://t.co/7gg6p5T8ry
— Alison J Miles (@AlisonJMiles2) October 1, 2018
Sirs, you should stop his contributions.
You can be an opposite political pundit but when you are attacking a child, you crossed a line that should never be crossed.
And Chris Britt, did it with a perverse, evil ways. https://t.co/Gs6eO5PnAh— StellaBasham (@Stella_Basham1) October 1, 2018
. You might wanna consider finding another contributor. This is a horrific cartoon. #Kavanaugh https://t.co/e5mzLeJdJi
— ❌ Proud American ❌ (@Sanddragger) October 1, 2018
Maybe you should re-examine your business ties with Chris Britt because he is making you look bad and you should offer an apology to Judge Kavanaugh and his family. You got some PR repairing to do.
